Greetings!

So my wife and I recently moved into a new home and I have quite a bit of garage space to play with! Our previous home had a 2 car garage with 540 sqft, but the new 2+1 has just over 720 sqft!

Plans for the garage include:
  • Flourescent fixtures throughout
  • Workbench (design and build)
  • Cabinetry on French cleats
  • One day...epoxy
  • Wall storage ideas for larger items (wheelbarrow, recycling tubs, kid bike trailer, etc)

Below is the SketchUp I made for planning everything out. Still a lot left to add in here.

The previous owner left his 4x8 pegboard, so that will be filled up and organized.

However, he never added any lights, so the entire thing is lit by 2 60W incandescent bulbs! You can see from the CAD that there will be eight 8ft 4-bulb fluorescent fixtures.

Below is a panorama of the entire thing. Still cluttered from the move two weeks ago.

Good to be a poster on GJ now! Been lurking for a while...

This is identical to my garage so I would love to see what you do as I'm kinda lost on how to approach my garage

For sure. I'll probably add the Sketchupvdrawing far in advance of any of the work.
First two eight foot fluorescents are up and wired, but I haven't installed the surface mount conduit yet.

I have the same layout. You're lucky and have an extra 180sqft more than i do. I would do epoxy now before you get more and more stuff in the garage.

Yea I planned to do epoxy before we actually moved in. We had almost a month between closing and moving, but with work and a kid I didn't get it done. Plus with all the closing cost and down payment I decided to hold off.

I plan on installing myself. After lots of research, I think I'm going with armorclad system. The 19 mil one.

At least the majority of my storage solutions will be off the ground and/or easily movable.

So after a busy month with work and out of town business trips, I was able to get at least two of the fixtures up.

The current round ceiling fixture had two two whites, two reds, and a green attached to the current incandescent fixture.

In meetings at work, I was able to sketch a rough diagram of the wiring for the first two fixtures:

And after getting some free time, two of the fixtures are up!

Wiring is complete for these, but the pictures are on the SLR. Will upload tonight.

The next two fixtures to go up will be the perpendicular ones.

Alright, so here are the first two complete, except for the PVC support pieces on the ceiling.

Lighting was so ridiculous when we first moved in. It was difficult to even unpack boxes in there with those two incandescent bulbs.

I like what you have done with your space. my first reaction when seeing the picture was wow that is a small garage, once you get used to it you will want more space. I had to think back when I lived in Chicago and could not afford a garage and now a 6 car is too small.

While my wife and I were in graduate and medical school, we could only afford a one car garage and a tiny house. The garage became the storage for everything. This three car has been awesome for usability.
Now I will have room for woodworking projects and Corvette projects.

A link to my blog, where this and other garage/non-garage projects and portfolios will be kept.
https://ericrinard.wordpress.com/
Included there: remodeling, photography, custom computers, and other interests.

It's still a WIP, but will be updated along with these threads.

Don't mind the selfish plug :)

Garage is adequately lit. Check.
Projects need completing. Check.

So after taking time to upgrade the lighting in the garage to four 8-foot, 4-bulb fluorescent fixtures, it is time to start projects. Before doing so, I would like to get a nice workstation built to allow easier cuts in addition to a router station where I can begin routing straight pieces.

Right now, the Craftsmen table saw sits on the floor, and those who have cut many boards before know how terrible it is on your back when you have to bend over so often with heavy material.

I found the idea from Wood Magazine:
00-idea.jpg

However, it needed to be redesigned, since my saw is much wider than the one used in their plan. You would first think this is relatively simple; extend the measurements on the horizontal axis, however, when cutting 4x8 plywood, you have to plan to pieces out to make the most use of the wood.
Therefore, as I am akin to do, I designed the workstation in Google SketchUp.

Below, you can see the first draft of the unit.

Next is a picture with the wings folded down.

From here, I color-coded each similar piece to begin the layout process:

After breaking it down, I began to organize the pieces to most efficiently fit on the plywood sheet.

After much trial and error, I finally came to an optimized layout:

Stay tuned for the build!

Just a quick update.

Workstation build is complete, and the first two parts of the build are posted on the blog. It's easier to link there instead of posting the images to Imgur and replacing here.
I tried to copy the HTML out into here, but the tags the forum and Wordpress use are different.

Anyone have any ideas one a more seamless way to do this?

Links to build parts:

Tablesaw/Router Workstation – Part 1: Design

Tablesaw/Router Workstation – Part 2a: Main Body Build

Tablesaw/Router Workstation – Part 2b: Side Supports

The router top and fence section will be written soon!

Hope you enjoy!
