So is USE-2 acceptable for direct burial or not.
This was never answered.

I have just picked up 12' of (2,2,4)
the cable marking says;
[AL use-2 600v sun-res (UL) E-207803 (919063-001) Kingwire Chase-2]
from Elliot Supply in Texas. They say it is ok for direct burial. But nothing on the cables says URD or UF.
They infact call it "Stephens URD" on the invoice.
it is catalog # URD21000.
$1.04 per foot.

This was almost right. I just bought 60' of this cable and its not chase-2, its phase-2. At least on one of the black cables, the other black cable reads phase-1. Anyway ii will try to post some pics, but this is my first post. I jist had a guy run this cable up a pole, then to my detatched garage, into a breaker box feeding 2 20 amp breakers. Im worried also after reading this.

If the marking on the cable has USE-2 printed on it like you quoted, then its fine for inside use. If it has URD and nothing else, then its a problem going inside to your breaker panel.

So let me get this straight, you have exposed triplex or quad plex running up a pole? and does it pass overhead to a mast on the garage? If it is protected up the pole, and supported with a cable on the overhead run, it is sunlight resistant, so I guess its not a problem, but what did you do for the ground wire? Where are you supplying this cable/wire from? house? meter?

Ooops... not quite right. Cable rated only USE-2 is not suitable for inside use. It would also need the ratings of RHH or RHW-2 to be approved for inside use. URD (Underground Residential Distribution) is a cable type not an insulation rating and its insulation is rated only USE-2.
