2 bench grinders to disassemble

My old Victor bench grinder has been needing new bearings and cannot be ignored. I started tearing it down to where I need to separate the housing so I can pull the spindle out. It does not want to come apart. The bearing looks like it is pressed tightly into the end housing. What should be the next step?

I have another grinder on a pedestal, a Baldor that I got at a garage sale that shudders on start up. With both stones off it still shudders, so I think the spindle might be bent. But since I was tearing down the one, I decided to go for the other and got to the same point. I'm obviously missing some knowledge here.

End bells need to be separated from the main body of the motor. For the baldor tap that raised shoulder on the end bells where the bolt goes thru and gradually work your way around the circumference of the motor. A flat head screwdriver might work.

On the Victor it looks like you'll need to separate where the seam is between the main body and end bells. An old screwdriver with a thin sharpened tip might work. Turn the grinder over. Sometimes there's already a slot that's a good starting point.

Once the end bells are loose you might need a pulley puller to completely remove the end bells.

Be careful because centrifical start assemblys and wiring are attached to one of the end bells and need to be detached before you can completely remove that end bell. The rotors usually come out the side of the motor without the centrifical start assembly.

The end bells are separated. The Baldor had no connections to either end--both bells came right off and I pulled the rotor out easy. I used a puller to get the bearings off. The Victor not so easy. I pulled the left end off but the right end doesn't want to give way. I don't see where it is attached. There's no access to anything behind the rotor. I tried hitting the end, but it shifted the spindle inside the rotor so I hit it on the other end and got it lined up again. But the bell is still attached (as it is in the photo).

I got the one bearing off of the Victor. Hopefully you can buy bearings by the specs of the motor because the super tiny stamps on the edge of the bearings are incomplete at best. The two Baldor bearings seems to have different numbers, and the Victor just says 15 at 12:00 and C at 6:00.

Just a guess but maybe your Victor has a two part motor case and only one bell is removable. I can't tell from the image.

I managed to remove the Victor's RH endcap. As Davefr expected, the centrifical start mechanism was anchored in that cap. The wires were soldered to the contacts, so I removed the two screws holding that mechanism to the cap.

The cap would not pull off the spindle--I rocked it back and forth and etc, but it didn't work. Luckily the arbor (?) on that end has places for two set screws. I inserted them just enough for my two-arm puller to get a grip, and pulled the cap off that way.

This exposed the start mechanism. It looks pretty clean. Anything I should do while I'm in here-- other than cleaning the spot where water must have sat? I'd rather not try to re-solder what looks to be very capable contacts for the wires.

The RH bearing looks to be pressed into the RH arbor. You can't see it because there is a sort of end cover pressed into the outside part of the arbor, and the inside looks to have some washers or something pressed in to cover the bearing. I don't see any way to press out the bearing without pressing out that cover. The other bearing is open on one side, so maybe this one is also open, and this cover is intended to keep out dust. Maybe I can find an exact fit bearing that is closed on both sides like the Baldor ones. I will ask at the bearing store tomorrow.

I agree, go with the more common double shielded bearings. I don't see any need for those covers.

I'd clean the centrifical switch contacts with very fine sandpaper or a points file and make sure that area is clean.
