2 Car Attached Garage "Hacker-space"

This is my 2 car garage build thread. I started collecting machine tools and found a need to start neatly organizing everything in the garage. Since this is a hackerspace for fun electronic and mechanical projects, the look will model something that would have looked a 1960's ICBM Launch Control Room. Plenty of military green, dark grey, sea foam green and fluorescent lighting.

This is the beginning of about what the garage had looked like:

I then collected filing cabinets to replace the open exposed shelves

I started painting the cabinets. Sherwin Williams has a water based latex enamel (satin). Good results were obtained by just rolling the enamel with a foam roller. It sticks, but I imagine is with get more durable with age. Best part - water cleanup.

These are the airline service carts I posted about earlier for stock storage. They were also painted, but the labels were left unpainted.

This is the shoe rack. It was from Ikea and painted. I like how it keeps metal shavings out of my shoes while being easily accessible.

The workbench all painted up. Pegboard on the side.

Cabinets installed. Its messy right now, but I like the color.

Im straight laughing at your file cabinets(with respect of course)... at one point, I had about 45 filing cabinets in here from 2 drawer to 5 drawer. I have narrowed them down to only a couple in the shop and the best few in storage and sold the rest. I like your plans, sounds like a familar style and should turn out well.

Thanks for looking. For $20 on average each cabinet through craigslist, its the "poor mans" way to get attractive storage.

Here's the small parts organizer for the workbench. I uses two cabinet slides and some recycled mini "oil drums" that were trade show giveaways.

T8 lighting installation

Following the sawmillcreek.com article, I installed t8 lighting in the garage. For 100 lumen/sq ft, I calculated I would need about 16 32watt t8 bulbs. That article was about right as I can see everything without a need for a task light. The quality of light from the t8 bulbs is fantastic. Spacing them about 6 feet apart spreads the light out evenly and does not create shadows on whatever was illuminated. I am using Phillips neutral (3500k) 32 watt bulbs which give a very natural light.

Rivetted some filing cabinets together and built a frame with casters:

Cabinets were mounted. Unfortunately, one door could not swing open due to the garage door track.

Recycled some ball bearing slides from old work bench.

Now door can slide open from the side.

Craigslist has been a big help. Down here in south Florida we have lots of home foreclosures, so a lot of these cabinets show up from flippers and remodelers. Unfortunately, the flippers also are looking for cabinets for the house that was missing cabinets... So you have to be quick or they are gone because someone bought them or they just didn't want to keep them around.

Its called the "Saris Cycle Glide". It allows you to store your bikes like a vertical files - slide the bike to the side to pick the one you want.

Built a vertical cabinet out of a filing cabinet. I should have measured the height....time to make a wooden riser.

Great re-use of materials! I have some file cabinets just like that in my office. They are only the 2 door ones. If i could find more I would definatly use them. They are thicker that most of what you can buy today. I originally wanted to build them into a bench and make some solid wood file cabinets for my office.

That's scary, can't you do some kind of lip to make sure it doesnt accidentally walk off of the riser over time and tip?

Good point, thanks! I do plan on lowering the adjacent cabinets and butting them up to cabinets on the side.

If I'm following you, that will work for the side, but what about to the front?

It looks like the feet of the cabinet overhang the front of the riser ever so slightly? Optical illusion?

Rockwell Drill Press Re-build

Rebuilt a 14" rockwell-delta drill press.

EMCO PC50 CNC Mill

Sorry about the delay lately. Posting photos seems to be a PITA when your photos are large on your blog. I wish they would auto-scale. Anyway, sold my Taig CNC mill for an EMCO PC50 CNC Mill.

Prepared a solid table for it by welding the joints and welding some support beams.
