2 Car Garage budget makeover... updates over time

I always get some dents in my Gladiator products that I order online - a 2x4 and a hammer usually knocks them out. Mind you - all the dents have been on the back of the panel and I never cared.

Ok... things are looking so far so good... Wife brought in the SUV directly after work, so the tires should be fairly hot, but today was only the mid 80's so I really don't know if the air temp really affects tire temps.

SUV sat in there for 5 hrs before we took it out for dinner. At this point the tires are cool to the touch. Pulled out the SUV and no lift!

Tomorrow I'll pull out the sedan as I brought it in after work and it will have sat in one spot for over 15hrs. Hopefully that will pan out OK.

Looks like the Rustoleum floor epoxy kit? If so it's the same one I have. I did mine about 8 years ago. The epoxy won't lift from hot tires right away, but it will over time. You might consider some of those rubber parking pads if that's an issue for you.

So Home Depot calls me that my Gladiator order is in, but the tall cabinet arrived damaged. Spoke to one of the guys and he said Estes the shipper damaged it pretty bad. It's in the back of the cabinet. Grrrrr... I knew something was going to happen. Need to swing by the store to see how bad it is.

If it's not too bad, what kind of discount do you think I should ask for? He told me it's pretty bad, but it's on the back.

So the damage was really bad... returned and reordered. HD gave me an additional 10% off and delivering it to my home for free. Which is a good thing b/c when I saw the cabinets in the store, they looked pretty big and heavy.

Ok... nearly a month now since I rolled out the Rustoleum Epoxy kit. So far so good and no tire lift.

Subscribed! I have a very similar sized garage with the same idea of wanting to be on budget for a while and be happy with it. Looks great so far and can't help but notice that you have the same luck as me as far as ordering things and not getting correct/undamaged items. Lol

Just got off the phone with Gladiator... they are sending me the replacement part.

I also added some Costco LED lights. Very bright, but thinking I need at least two more, but four more would be ideal.

I'm going to take down that large shelf since I need more space for one of the tall cabinets. Debating if I want to keep the two talls on the left or center the bench and have them flank it.

Removed that ginormous shelf to make room for the workbench. It visually really opens up the garage. Just need to paint the bare wood parts. Can't wait for one more upper cabinet and the workbench replacement part.

Finally received the final upper and installed them. Still waiting for a part for the workbench, but wanted to see how it could look. The bundle I bought didn't come with enough gear track, so I stud mounted the uppers. Once I buy some more track, I'll reinstall them. I also need to figure out the best way to layout the uppers.

Between the two tall cabinets will be the 72" bench. There are two 30" uppers so I have 12" to fill in... Anyone have any ideas? Maybe some kind of shelf between the two uppers?

Also a question, the lowest point of the uppers is 53" from the floor. Is that the correct height?

Well the final replacement part on the workbench arrived. Everything is assembled... now I just need to organize all the contents. Ideally, I'd like to reinstall the uppers with gear track and move them to either side and have 12" of space in between, but unsure what to put in that 12" of space. Ideally I'd love to add some kind of open shelves suspended between the two uppers, but don't have any ideas how to do that.

Also looking for a good deal on a stool.

I don't think there's a correct height for the upper cabinets. If you can reach everything, than it's the perfect height. As far as the shelves, I think a couple of floating shelves would look good. Also if you're a fan of snap on, they have stool for sale at SAMs club for $54 and it looks a lot better than the gladiator stool.

What a transformation! Looks great. I thought about painting my new garage floor with that stuff but my mechanic friend said jackstands and car parts will chip it. I work on cars a lot so that changed my mind. It looks really nice though.

Thanks.. I would agree with your friend. Since I only park the cars and detail in there, I'm hoping it will hold up for a while until I can afford some RaceDeck in the far future.

Added some harbor freight magnetic tool holders and the magnetic paper towel holder.

The tool holders are pretty good since I had a coupon for $3.99 each (bought 3). It has a bit of a hard time with heavier screw drivers as there isn't enough surface area on the screw drivers, but over all works well and cheap. The paper towel holder works really well. The magnets are covered as not to scratch the cabinets.







Over here I need to put up a tool holder to hang all of the hand saws and long levels.

You need to set the magnetic strip so the screwdrivers sit with their weight on their handle like this:

Then the magnet is not working to take all the weight - works for me!

Thanks.. the only problem is the clearance between the bottom of the upper cabinet. I mounted the magnets as low as I could. The handle on my longest screw driver is too long.

Yes, eventually I'll replace the standard opener with a jack mount to mirror the other one. I have the room for a lift for the distant future.

Need some opinions... Where to mount my peg boards.

I have two pieces and would mount them here for symmetry's sake. I really can't think of any true reason to hang any tools here... It would just look nice since the grey works well with my Gladiators.



Or just mount one here and it will hang a bunch of power tools and other random tools. This makes the most sense, but I'm not sure what to do with the other panel of peg board.
Any ideas what to do with the other piece?

I would go with the second option since it offers you the most use for the board and it'll leave you room to the right of your bench for other stuff.

New home for the hose. Temporary shot to see what it will look like.. will mount it a little lower. Need to get to Home Depot for an 8" lag bolt and washer.

Well.. ended up needing a 10" lag and added a small piece of 2x4 for extra strength. I've had this green hose for a while and it kinks every now and again. I have a new Sears rubber hose in black that should look better on the rim.



Finally added a section of peg board... still messing with tool placement.

Ok... four months have gone by and so far no hot tire lift using Rustoleum epoxy (water based).

I had a 26" LCD setup as my placeholder in a not so great location.



I've replaced it with a 46" in the final location
Although it looks smaller than I imagined after I mounted it. Almost feel like it should be bigger. LOL.

Thanks. It's been a fairly long process between garage work and general home improvements that the wife wants done. The LCD provides some background noise and something to watch during breaks while working in the garage.

how did you attach the wheel to the wall?

I screwed a piece of 2 x 4 to a stud to help support some vertical weight (not really sure that I actually needed it) and one 10" lag with a washer into a stud. Currently supporting a 75' and 50' hoses.
