Hello all,

I've been a long time lurker and now I am a 23 year old Home owner. I graduated after 6 years of working my way through school last december and landed a job right after graduation(I feel very lucky). I have been in an apartment all through school and have been dying for a garage. I got a short term lease thinking I would rent a house once I knew the area. After some thinking and number crunching I decided it would be cheaper/better for me to buy than rent.

I have been rebuilding a 1965 ford mustang since I was 16 and this was the main reason why I wanted the garage. Now that I have purchased a house, I am working on preparing the garage for the mustangs arrival. My paint scheme is monotone, grey, white and black. Right now I am working on painting the garage walls grey, black trim, and white doors and ceiling.

I on my to-do list is the floors, lighting, storage, and security. I also have two windows I want to do something to secure but still let air through when I am working. Also we have a lot of bugs that are quite annoying when outside at night.

The mustang is still a work in progress.

The house, you can see the two car garage windows on the left:

First project, work bench. Air compressor and stereo under under the bench. The picture makes it look slanted but it is level:

My car getting some neglected work done that is not fun to do in an apartment parking lot.

Painting the back wall:

I finished the top of the workbench with some 2x12's and one 2x6 cut to the width.

I also need a serious light upgrade, the garage has two "porch" lights wired in, I am thinking 4 2x4' t8's would be sufficient. I have two storage closets in the back, one has 6 bikes(i am also a cyclist) and the other has yard stuff. I was thinking the large wall on the left would be a good place for some slat wall.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I plan to park the mustang where my car is now, to keep it away from the main into the house door, and let my fiancee park next to the mustang and I will park outside.

Nice place!

How did you feel buying a house like that at 23?

I am 27, bought my first house last year and I wasn't taken all that serious by a few realtors even.

Had a contractor do work at the house one day and asked me if my Dad was home. :wtf::bounce:

That's a helluva first house and garage, congratulations. There's an endless amount of good ideas on the forum, just poke around a little bit.

Nice looking house. I just bought my first one this year also. It feels good doesn't it? I just did the first coat of mud and tape in mine yesterday so I envy that yours was already drywalled.

It was a bit nerve racking, I knew it was the right thing to do, but I felt to young. I talked with a broker first, who then recommended me to one of her real estate friends which I think helped with her taking more serious. When I was meeting with people in the neighborhood, the conversations stopped just short of, "and where are your parents." One weekend my parents were up and the neighbors behind us came to meet and greet and were talking with my mother and I. He looked over at my mom and said, "I just wanted to welcome you and your family to the neighborhood" My mother replied, "O no its not mine its his" talk about a deer in headlights.

Nice looking house. I just bought my first one this year also. It feels good doesn't it? I just did the first coat of mud and tape in mine yesterday so I envy that yours was already drywalled.

Yes it does feel very good after years of renting, to finally have something of my own.

Back to the garage:
So like I said my plans right now:
*Finish painting, and paint trim work, including fixing and repainting the doors
*Hang ladder above the garage door
*Epoxy coat the floors, they are heavily stained so I think there will be a bit of prep
*replace "pourch" lights with 4 2x4' t8 lights, Should I just run surface mount conduit between the lights?
*Add a shelf over the work bench with a light for the bench for coolers and large bulky items.

*I am questionable on this but possibly get a screen for the garage door to keep air moving but bugs out? Does any one have one? Recommendation?

Another thing, My dryer vent, vents to the garage which I hate. I am thinking of running some conduit down the side of the wall and out the front of the garage. It would be one 90 degree bend at the wall and then a straight shot down the wall and through the outside wall. I was thinking of using over-sized downspout to channel the exhaust. The cross sectional area is about the same as a round tube, its smooth wall and will fit flush up against the wall and should look decent. I think its 13 feet from my outlet to outside the house so I should be with in code. Has any one else encountered this? Does any one know of a better solution?

Here is the car being towed away from my grandfathers back yard:

If you do that with the downspout I'd make sure you give it a slight fall as it leaves the garage otherwise condensation will build up in the pipe.

I was thinking of adding a 1 Degree slope which is what is required for yard drainage.

Million dollar home in NY.
Can I have a job? I'm doing it all wrong.:lol_hitti

Thanks, the I live in requires all structures to be made out of brick, even walmart, so throwing up a shed is a bit more costly then I can put out right now. What I am thinking of when I put my 8' wood fence up is to make a "box" in one of the corners and fill it in with some ground cover and have a small roof lower than the level of the fence to store my mower and stuff like that. But right now they are in the back closet under the stairs that can't be used for much more.

Wait till you get to experience the feeling of paying off the mortgage. I thought the day would never come, but we now have 11 years debt free under our belts. Nice place, you are doing something right.

Well a bit more work has gone on. I am working on adding an upper shelf to place things like empty coolers and tubs full of seasonal things. Along with that I added a work light over the bench and mounted some surround speakers up high. I need to extend the lights cord and add a switch to it and either run a channel down the wall to hid the cords or place some peg board on that wall and have the wires run behind it. I also added the vice, it was my grandfathers and then my fathers and now mine. I have yet to bolt it down but i think that is the final place for it.
