Look at the size of this thing (dolllar bill in picture for scale). It dwarfs that cast iron stand, which I bet weighs about 90 pounds alone. Notice the lift eye on the top:

I saw this very same grinder at an estate sale here earlier this summer, and I could've bought it for less than $50. But I passed because I didn't need it, I couldn't tell if the motor ran or not (we plugged it in and turned it on, but nothing happened), and the thought of hauling that monster made my back hurt. That is one monster paperweight if the motor doesn't run. By the way, I think the posting is wrong regarding the horsepower. They are correct that the motor is single phase. I took photos of it. The tag is difficult to read, but I believe that it says at 110 Volts the maximum continuous current draw is 42 amps, which would mean it is a 6 hp motor. And the size would be consistent with that rating. I would be surprised if the stand by itself weighs less than 150lbs. And the motor is an absolute monster. If it weighs less than 200 lbs something is seriously wrong.

Not to hijack the thread but here is my 2hp beast, almost done now. It clocks in at 600lbs, its a 3phase motor. just watch your fingers lol

Also difficult to believe. More than 1 HP on 110 volts is very unusual. To have 6 HP and 42 amps on 110 volts is bad science.

Jack, I had difficulty believing this as well. Since the tag also lists 220 Volts at what looks like 21 amps, I believe that it is correct. I'll upload a larger image of the motor tag later on so you and everyone else can examine it for yourselves.

Regardless, this is by far the largest single phase motor that I have personally ever seen. I own a very old single phase 2 hp motor that came off of a horizontal milling machine. I recently wired it up and got it running again. It weighs around 150 lbs, and the motor in that ad makes mine look like a toy.

While it's possible to grind with it, it's not really a grinder. Just a motor on a pedestal someone stuck a grinding wheel on. Kind of scary with no guards on it.

Here's an enlarged view of the motor tag that shows the rated voltage (110 volts) and amps (42). The motor can also be configured for 220 volt operation. I've also included a larger photo of the motor and stand.

I agree. It clearly looks home made, with pipe fittings for the rest and a mandrel adapter on the motor shaft. And no guard on that open wheel! I'm too old to risk my life with that mess....

Judging by the ruler in the foreground of that picture, I wouldn't call it giant.

It's not uncommon to see old motors that could be wired 120 up into the 5hp range.

I would guess the reason was some buildings may have only had 120v service.

The base, now gone, appears to have originally supported a hand-cranked cream separator. The one I have weighs more like fifty pounds than ninety.
