Can anyone here explain, to this dummy, the difference and reason for having the Asymmetric or Symmetric or Versymmetric two post lift?

Or where can I go on the internet to get a very clear meaning of Asymmetric, Symmetric, and Versymmetric when referring to two post lifts?

I looked up the individual words mean.

Thanks for any help.

I think that Greg Smith Equipment has an FAQ that explains it. I'd look there.

Much of the decision should be made on the work envelope you intend to use the lift for. If using for pickup trucks/SUV's then a symmetric lift will be the most benefit because the vehicle is, for the most part, balanced front to rear moreso than modern cars and on the trucks/SUV's the symmetrical placed columns will be placed somewhere in the front seat area.

If you will be servicing mostly modern cars which are much more front end biased as far as weight distribution with transverse engine/transmissions then asymmetrical lifts are more beneficial, which by position of the car the columns are placed more in the dash plane.

I work on a large number of both so I went with the symmetrical/asymmetrical combo style which has the straight mounted columns but multi-sectional front arms.

Symmetrical for large trucks and SUV's.

Asymmetrical for most FWD cars.

zmotorsports, thanks for the reason why. I think I need a symmetrical/asymmetrical combo lift as you chose.

I am retired, but when I worked I never worked where there was a lift. I always used a jack, jack stands, and a creeper. I did all aspects of repair when I worked for someone else and when I was in business for myself. I've been disabled since 1997 and it is getting harder to do the jack and creeper thang, I can't get up, from the creeper height, without having something close to climb. Course I can't stand very long either, but with a lift, I can possibly have a chair/stool handy.

I will be liftin all types of vehicles. I drive a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 4 door diesel, but my wife has a Ford Escape and a P T Cruiser.

I started out thinkin bout a 4 post lift, but decided against it cause of the floor space it destroys.

My Garage is 50'x50' with a 14'3"tall x16'wide door.

I went with an asymmetrical with multi sectional low profile arms after much pondering. I have just put power to it today and haven't lifted anything with it yet. I still need to dial it in which I will hopefully do this weekend.
