Simple question but I bought these bigger straps which are 2" they can be used to tie down a car on a tow truck or something, but I found the hooks are so bulky they do not really hook onto itself like the smaller ones.

I wanted to use it in a loop and not 2 individual tie down points, should I use a shackle to hold the 2 hooks together (which seems to work), or I need something like this?

Re: 2" ratchet strap question

thread the non hooked end backwards through the slot in the tightener, around your object then back through the slot forwards. Ratchet to tighten.

I've never tried to loop the bigger ones, but axle straps as pictured are never a bad investment for a variety of scenarios. Otherwise one or two links of bigger chain should work and be less bulky than a clevis.

I like wide (2-3") strap. with loops on the end. Place the loop over the top of the item and then pass the other end through the loop. That end is cinched down. You could replaced the long hooked half of your ratchet with a loop strap cut in half. Heat seal the cut.

Axle straps are the next best thing. Along with a couple of axle strap, I always carry a couple of good sized shackles. THE best way to join straps or chains.

I release the ratchet and sometimes doesn't spin and undo the webbing
I have to unthread things like 15'. Sometimes it does release if I pull it hard enough. Am I threading it the wrong way?

Those look very similar to the ones we use in the trucking industry, the hooks attach to the inside of our trailers to secure our freight

If thats the only job you are going to do with it, cut the hook off the long strap without damaging the webbing. Remove the bolt that holds the short strap to the ratchet handle and put the loop on the end of the long strap in place of the short one.

Try pulling the release opposite of the regular release at the same time. The one that engages the teeth of the ratchet mechanism. Sometime they get in a bind also keep every thing lubed up. Like everything in life they work better when they are lubed.

Flat hooks work better then wire hooks for that purposes.

I know a couple of guys that have been using that style to strap cars down for a couple of decades. I have a couple but still prefer the spring loaded hooks. They seem to work very well in stake pockets on flat beds.

I've used both snap and spring hooks. For hauling vehicles I like snap hooks and axle straps.

I hook the strap back to itself where it is bolted on if I need to loop it. Or through the window on the hook itself
