So my wife and I are finally getting to the finishing step on the bathroom in our Garage addition and I have the following issue/question.

We are using an antique cast iron farm sink with a 2" drain.
My plumbing connection at the wall is a 1-1/2" female, where I planned to use the standard threaded adapter for the P trap connection.

I planned on using a 1-1/2" P trap.
What do I need to run this drain / strainer assembly into a standard 1-1/2" P trap?

Something doesn't sit right with me with that drawing. That strainer is designed to fit a 2" hole, but it doesn't say what sort of tailpiece it takes. I suspect it's already sized for a 1-1/2" tailpiece, but it might actually be 1-1/4". Either one would work easily with a 1-1/2" trap (you just need to choose the right rubber bushing), so I don't see any difficulties here.

Now if that actually took a 2" glue in pipe tail (like a shower base), then it would be a different story, but 2" schedule 40 IPS pipe has an OD of 2-3/8", and a compression nut that fits over it would be even larger (at least 2-5/8"), so that 2.087" nut tells me that's not a 2" tail.

That was my suspicion also, I went online to chat with Ferguson (who I ordered the trap from) and my guess is she didn't know what I was asking or what she was telling me.

Guess I need to be patient and see what shows up.

Yup. That drain looks like it takes 1 1/2" stuff to me, too. Years ago, I went to the hardware store and bought two complete sets of drain fittings, with a range of extra stuff, one in 1 1/2" and the other in 1 1/4" sizes and put them in a box in my garage. That way, I had everything I needed for any of the drains in my house. When I used one of them, I replaced it in the box with a new set.

I hate drain plumbing with a deep purple passion. I also hate lying under a sink and discovering that I have to make yet another trip to the hardware store, so I keep stocked up with that stuff. Personally, I think the entire system of drain plumbing needs to be revamped so it makes more sense, frankly.

Did I say I hated working on drains?

Once the drain arrives I will measure, I had to order online to get the finish the “boss” wanted.

Let’s see if USPS can take this package on a 10 day trip from their Detroit distribution center like another package I’m waiting on. (I’m just over an hour from Detroit)

The Jr. / Jr. Duo strainers will need a 1 1/2" flanged tailpiece in the material of your choice. It's a common basket strainer used on many bar sinks and some RV showers.
