I finally have started on the dreaded garage paint job project. I say dreaded only because of the work involved moving stuff around and covering other things and then painting but it needs it really bad. The ceiling had never actually been painted so it's really soaking up the paint. Had to run back to Menards and get an extra gallon so I can finish the second coat today on the ceiling. Then onto the walls. So far the temps are just warm enough that will a little extra heat in the room the latex paint dries pretty quick.

More pics to come when there is actually something to see other than watching white paint drying. And yes I know the old seam tape is coming loose but I ain't reaching up over my head on a ladder to mud those again. There would likely be a trip to the hospital involved with that. So I'll just settle for it being all fresh and white and better at reflecting light.

You got that right. I may have to pick and choose my days based on weather but hope to get it done before it turns freezing and full on winter.

I had actually thought to just spray it all back when it was still summer and I could safely move everything outside for a weekend. Right now we are stuck in this cycle of cool, drizzle/rainy weather so I had to fall back on the paint by roller method and move smaller items from one side of the garage to the other as a section of ceiling gets painted. At least I can reach it from the floor with an extension stick and don't have to work from a ladder.

Big push on the garage painting project today as I finished the first coat on the ceiling, let that dry a enough and then got the full second coat on the ceiling and also did a first coat of white on one wall. The walls will have a darker color for the bottom half but I had to use up the left over ceiling paint so it made a good first "cover the dirty marks" coat. Lots of little holes to patch now and then put on the finish coats of color.
Even with this much done when I turn on the lights it's noticeably brighter.


Also making changes in cabinetry. These two sturdy steel cabinets are gone. They have served me well for many years but it's time to change direction and decrease the clutter a little. These guys were good for storing oil and parts but the top surfaces were too low to work on and just became places to collect things. So they went on CL for cheap and sold today along with a steel bench/desk and another older wall cabinet that I will never have time to restore. Thinning of the herd felt good.

The paint will make a huge difference in light, I wish I had drywall on my ceiling. Maybe someday....

I have my eye on a rolling work station from HF with wood top, a couple tool drawers and lots of storage underneath. Plus I just restored an older Autolite brand wall cabinet. In total it will be a little less storage but that forces me to keep less. I started going through thee two gray cabinets and throwing some things out it made me realize having the extra cabinet space was just enabling me to fill it up with stuff I don't really need.
Hopefully I'll be getting a Black Friday price with coupon on the HF cabinet.

I have that GDS thing. Good Deal Syndrome, that get's me into trouble buying cabinets I don't need. Today was a purge day and forced me to pass on 4 items to another guy with GDS.

I am letting a rather large cabinet go, it is really cool, but just doesn’t fit with the rest of my storage. My Dad will be able to make better use of it than I will. Of course he has more junk (I mean stuff) than me.

YIKES! What did I do! It must have been the paint fumes (latex fumes).
Never fear, I will find reasons in the future for new "stuff" Just hopefully a little less of it.

Actually the deep shelf thing is what convinced me in the end. These two cabinets are that way and as I was emptying them out I was finding junk way in the back row that I had no clue was even in there. But I was keeping it cause "it might be valuable some day", assuming I could ever remember it was there.
As my memory gets shorter my storage shelves have to shrink in proportion.

Thanks Jon. It made a lot more difference than I expected actually. And, I'm only half done. Feeling pretty dumb actually that I waited this long to re-paint.

I would love to purpose build shelves to fit only what I need, in the end I have been slowly acquiring pull out shelves and drawers, that way I can always get to the back with relative ease. I still have several fixed shelves and that dang FSD gets me every time.

The pull out drawer method is a good one I think. You easily can see what's in the drawer form front to back. I'm doing that as much as possible especially with small items like fasteners.

The trouble I am still running into is labeling, I need to do a lot more of it. I have lots of drawers and they are almost all blue, so I can't say they are in the blue drawer.

Well I lasted for a couple of days anyway but the auction bug has bit me. Didn't buy anything big but I will be picking up a few goodies on Friday. Some things to keep and some to flip.

Either painting walls and ceilings is harder work than I remember or I'm just getting old in my old age.
Ya, I'm getting old.

Painted the second coat on the garage ceiling this past Saturday and two coats of the white on one full wall and two small walls. On Sunday I had a sore neck like you would not believe. So Sunday was pretty much a day of rest.

Got a bunch of hole patching and a little sanding done on Monday and some removal of other things that have been attached to the remaining wall for years. Yesterday I had the day off and managed to get two coats of the gray I'm using for the bottom half and made a trip to get some blue for the accent stripe between white and gray. Hoping by this weekend the white and gray will dry enough in our cold weather to let me mask the stripe and paint it.

The dividing stripe will be a semi dark blue. Seemed appropriate since that is one of my favorite colors.

I seem to have quite the ability to fill a room with stuff. Sometimes wish I was not so good at it.

Ya I hear you and often feel that way too but really, if we all had that super power of restraint and total organization this forum would likely be the, Boring Garage Journal.
Too much fun is had following each persons projects to change now.

Over this past weekend I got the garage painting done at least for this year. I have a few areas to touch up and some trim work to finish but it's 99% done and getting too cold here now to paint much more even with the door shut and my little heaters on.
I'm glad I tackled this project even so late in the year. I'm liking the clean walls and the paint colors.
Now to carefully replace some things I had on the walls without adding too much junk in the process. I still have lighting to replace and some insulation to install on the one remaining outside wall and up high over the garage door then all that will get covered in galvanized, corrugated sheet metal for a little accent to the painted walls.

Thanks guys. I guess my lesson to learn here is that once every 25 years or so you should probably paint the inside of your garage and clean it up. At least if you have drywall walls as they get dirty and banged up easily. I used all semi-gloss this time so hopefully dirt and fingerprints will be easier to wipe off. Banging the corner of your tool box into the wall don't wipe up so easily but, I still have patching mud and some touch up paint left. Hey its a garage!
So for anyone thinking about it, that's perfectly ok. I thought about it a really long time.
I still have more decorating ideas but we'll see how much I get done over the winter.

I agree with you there Paul. That's one of the reasons I subscribe to his thread so I can stay somewhat motivated to have better balance in the garage between projects and organization.

Slowly getting the garage back in order after the major painting portion is complete for this year. I've re-routed my air hose and some extra electrical service along one wall. Lights still need to be positioned properly yet.
The real task at hand is good old Garage Tetris as I continue to search for just the right placement of tool boxes and cabinets. I guess I'm motivated by having it one way for so long and, not really happy that there must be a better layout.

That will be an ongoing quest I think.

But with Black Friday coupons in hand I marched off the the local HF to treat myself this week. After using old faithful here for many years.


I decided to upgrade to a new and improved tool cart.


This is the 4 drawer model and was on sale for $99. My old red cart with the open top and one drawer became yet another junk collection space which made it then hard to actually get to the tool I wanted. This cart is the same width but a little taller and with the extra drawers for things I use on a regular basis. I will likely add a new surface to the top yet, made of either wood or rubber mat. Giving that thought some time to percolate in the old brain cavity for awhile. I really like the multiple holes on each side of the frame to store things like pry bars, etc. Keeps those bigger tools handy without taking up drawer space.
