Is the Brighton Airport smaller than the Howell Airport? I've been past Howell Airport hundreds of times, and it's decent size.
Definitely smaller. You’re thinking of the Livingston County Airport just west of downtown Howell. It does have a longer runway that can accommodate small jets. It has hosted air shows in the past as well as a pretty good card show each fall.
The Brighton airport is smaller and used for small private aircraft. To be honest I didn’t think it was even paved until I just now looked it up online. Either way I don’t think I’ll be mis-directing any planes or attracting any aliens.

Project Creep, Project Burnout, depression, whatever you might call it really becomes an issue for me. I have no less than 6 ongoing vehicle related projects along with side projects to improve the shop and tools and then there’s home maintenance. Geez, how did I ever have tome to work before retiring?
So to help improve progress I’ve felt the need to re-prioritize somehow. Step one is going to be that I stop trying to work a little bit on every big project at the same time and instead separate them by season. So I’ve designated at least two car projects to winter only work and some others to be summer only.
The first one to go into storage was the T-bucket car that I’m collecting parts for. That went into summer storage.
Next is the Belly Tanker tribute car project. This winter I made a big push to concentrate on it and managed to get the frame cut and “Z’d”, the read diff is located and attached, the motor is finally mounted into the frame, the seat and roll bar is located and much of the sheet metal is close to being in place. All this is in mock up stage at this point and many items are just tacked in. So hopefully next winter I can do a lot more final welding and adding bracing to the frame. But this coming week it goes into storage and I can shift focus to summer time car tasks. Hopefully forgetting it for a few months will help me be re-excited when I bring it back out to work on and stop the burn out feeling when it just sits in the shop without any major change happening.

The tanker is going to look very cool. I also like your strategy for fighting burn out. I hope it works for you.
I hope so too. It’s working in the short term at least. Moving that project out of the shop has created a strange appearance of something called “floor space” where I can walk around and work on other projects. What an original idea!!!

Anybody remember the band, The FIXX? Well their one hit wonder “One Thing Leads to Another” kept playing in my head all day as one task kept morphing into multiple unexpected steps.

Working on the ‘29 Roadster today to replace the steering box with a new one and thought while I’m in that area of the engine I’ll go ahead and simply replace the old rusty shorty headers with some new chrome ones I had bought a year ago.
Well of course its never simple. The new headers, while same style, are a little bigger tubing and slightly different bends, Had to make a tool to dimple one tube to get one header bolt to fit. Then the collector flange was clocker ever so slightly different so it did not align to the exhaust pipe. Had to cut the pipe flange off, re-clock it and weld it back on. All that meant installing and removing the exhaust pipe 3 times. So a simple job took half a day. Good thing I’m retired.
While it was all apart I went ahead and painted the whole pipe and muffler black so they disappear more under the car when installed.
And tomorrow I get to do it all over again on the passenger side. YAY!

But it does feel good to finally accomplish some to-do list tasks that have been waiting their turn.

This summers biggest project is to get ready to race at Bonneville again in September at World of Speed. The initial goal is to conquer the 130 mph barrier and join that club with the old Police Intercepter. Then if I can get enough speed out of it I hope to try for the 150 mph club.
So some serious upgrades are in the plans. First was upgrading the roll bar to add door bars and another cross brace on the main hoop so I can install a seat back support.

This weekend I’m conquering my fears of working on automatic transmissions and installing a JMOD shift kit in the valve body. After a few YT videos and reading the instructions its easier than I thought just taking it one step at a time.

In July the car goes to a speed shop for new cams, exhaust and some serious computer tuning.

Hope everyone in the US is enjoying this weekend holiday and having family fun or getting some extra projects done around the shop.

I put this on the HF Pass/Fail thread also but will mention it here too. I needed a bigger snap ring plier for the transmission work this weekend and got this one at Harbor Freight (on sale too). I’d give it a definite PASS. I needed to remove/replace a pretty stiff snap ring about 2 inches in diameter holding the 1-2 accumulator piston and it worked very well. The reversible feature seems nice as well.

Where did you get the DOM tubing for your cage? Did you bend it? Nice welds, btw. As long as you keep the valve body very clean, it should be easy.

Ya, getting the steel tubing these days is not easy here locally. I tried various steel supply places near me and none available. The guy doing the fabrication was also having trouble getting steel. But I got lucky and found some on the Summit Racing website so it made it easy to get two 8 foot sticks of 1.75 dia, .120 wall DOM delivered. Not the cheapest thing in the world but I had to have it.
The welds are not mine BTW. I can booger weld like a pro and that’s why I have plenty of grinders and lots of spray paint. o_O That’s why I take it to a local race car fabricator for this type of stuff. He has the tubing bender, is an excellent welder and knows how to properly locate the tubing to the frame so I don’t have any worries going through tech inspection. It’s done right.

The trans shift kit install went smooth and I definitely strived to keep everything clean. I should have it out on the road tomorrow for a first test drive and then we’ll see if I did it right.

Alro didn't have any DOM?
They may have but honestly didn’t get that far. When I my Fab guy couldn’t get any and the local places around Brighton couldn’t help me I went to the internet and Summit had an easy solution for someone like me only needing a small order of 2 8ft sticks. I probably could have driven around greater Detroit to find some but admittedly took the easier path.

This past Saturday I had the great pleasure to travel to the Center Of The Universe (COTU) and visit the "Restored 1930'sAuto Shop" of Thomas and Chris down in Philo, IL. What a pleasure and treat to see this place in person after following the build process over many years. Seeing it in person really gives a different perspective that you don't get from the internet.
This very gracious couple opened their home and shops to anyone that visited and gave very thorough tours. I thoroughly enjoyed my day and the visit lasted way longer than originally planned for me but was well worth the late drive home to MI.

The original shop is awesome. Mr. Johnson would feel right at home working there again. Got to see the lift work and check out Gus in detail. Tours of the old equipment, the house and the wood shop did not disappoint. And yes the wall plate is still there with properly clocked screws and still certified level even though the old building siding would seem to indicate otherwise. More of the Terraplane is getting devoured by that tree but still a very cool piece of yard art.

If you are not familiar with their thread go check it out and start from the beginning. It's long but worth it.D76E5BA9-2982-4F42-8E29-4BEE0ADD1E1D.jpeg9E84ECF6-05A0-445D-831F-3FB1E56F4C2A.jpeg679DD0AE-F251-480D-AD2A-51696714584C.jpeg4822A7DE-5AE0-453A-94B5-1D33CF7F27EF.jpeg6402F532-018F-47C6-A368-414445DA16E3.jpeg4AC6C220-2440-4667-B0D8-281C1ED376F6.jpeg1E8061B1-CE3A-4129-9EEC-5E9E97A651F5.jpeg2AFAF5A6-7834-44AA-865C-34A985EADED0.jpeg8290F6D1-EC18-48D2-A604-F535CB6B76BB.jpegA3D37373-48DF-47D7-AB1B-B47501717EEC.jpeg

Continued work on the Salt Interceptor to get it ready for racing in September. This time its a big upgrade in the wheel/tire combo. Last year I ran with stock Police wheels and some older Goodyear Eagles (W speed rating) rated to 168 mph. They really are too wide for land speed racing but was all I had. This year I was lucky to find some nice aluminum wheels that are 4.5” wide by 18” diameter. I ordered a complete set of skinny drag racing front tires which should work fine for this purpose. Got them mounted, balanced and put on the car this past week. Everything fits perfect and a shake down run at an undisclosed test road possibly near my house was positive. Ran smooth and stable up to 93 mph so I’m happy and have one more preparation checked off the list.6FEB7CB6-7022-41BA-98E0-255EE2351EEA.jpeg702CDAC1-CA4D-433C-8317-7A443294FF99.jpeg3A470447-6855-4F6F-96D8-86C7A5CAD80F.jpeg

Are you allowed to take off the mirrors? Is that duct tape, or the foil tape over the old spot light holes?
Yes I can take the mirrors off. I actually did that last year after making the first run bone stock with spot lights, mirrors and all. Really, taking off the side mirrors is not a big issue at this stage. The amount of aero restriction at the speed I’m shooting for is minimal.
Good old duct tape ( er, racers tape I should say) covering the a-pillar holes form the spot lights. Havn’t had time or need for anything more permanent yet.
One thing I’m still researching are brake calipers that allow the piston to retract slightly when not applied. The drag on the pads lightly touching the rotors is more concerning than aero. And I’m still restricted from any significant body mods that are not stock for the car so other tricks must be employed.

What do they consider "significant"? See Mark Donahue's book. Or Jim Hall's Can-Am cars.
Well at this point I can’t do things like lowering the car, adding belly pans or adding rear wings. Removing mirrors and taping up the grille did not raise any questions. But no aero mods that did not come on the car as sold to the public.

What about Marauder parts? I thought they had few ground effects, a spoiler, maybe a few other things that might help.

The ‘03-‘05 Marauder had a small lip spoiler on the trunk. It was more of a styling exercise than a functional downforce aid. The other body mods available on that car were styling differences in the bumper covers and the rocker moldings. I am tempted to just make my own larger rear wing and bolt it on until they tell me it’s not legal then easily take it off. Racing rules are meant to be pushed a little until you get told no. We’ll see what I can come up with in the time remaining this summer. In two weeks the car goes to a shop for engine work and tuning.

Still working steadily here on prepping the Crown Vic for racing at Bonneville in September. It spent the last 2 weeks at MO’s Speed Shop in Dallas, GA getting engine work and a “Marty Tune”. Martin Ochs is well known as the go-to guy for tuning the 4.6L Ford engine especially in the Ford Panther Platform. It was well worth the two trips down there and I’m excited about the good HP increase we achieved and the tuning for my specific goals. The engine got new hotter cams, new valve springs, new timing chain set, new Stainless Works headers with tuned exhaust. Also changed out the intake elbow to a better one. Re-balanced the drive shaft and new U-joints. It’s now tuned to run its best on E-85 pump gas. With no changes to the stock heads and engine internals we were able to add 80 HP at the rear wheels (Naturally aspirated). And the power curve is where the big difference lies. The old stock Ford tuning reached max power at about 4900 RPM and then stopped climbing and just leveled out or decreased slightly. Most likely they were pulling out timing and fuel. Now it ramps up quicker, pulls hard to 5500 RPM and brings most of the new power in at higher speed which is where I need it.
On the chassis dyno we hit 140 mph within about 1400 feet of distance so, even with traction losses on the salt factored in, that should give me a good chance to hit my 135 mph goal within the one mile allowed. But we’ll see in the real world come September.
Since bringing the car back home I’ve been trying to Do a few other improvements. The oil vapor system is now routed from both valve covers into a separate catch can so we’re not trying to burn oily vapors. I did remove the engine compartment side of the A/C system so various holes to the vehicle interior have to be covered. And the biggest addition is some permanent aero improvements on the front end by covering some of the front bumper openings with something other than tape and, I fabricated a one piece front under body pan from an aluminum sheet. The car only had a small plastic piece under there originally and I got a chance to watch it from behind one day as someone else drove the car. As soon as you hit about 45 mph that plastic piece fluttered like crazy under the car. It showed first hand how much turbulence there was under there. So now its a smooth cover from the front edge of the bumper cover back to the engine cradle and stops just in front of the oil pan. It should help direct air flow rearward under the car instead of swirling around under the engine/radiator area. I understand the potential engine cooling ramifications but think I can cool it off easy enough after each run If it gets hot.
Its been lots of fun building this into a race car and looking forward to some faster runs this year and then seeing where the next improvements will be needed.
I still have plans for a rear deck spoiler/wicker bill design if time allows. I’m off to Bonneville next week to spectate during Speed Week, visit family and then back to Michigan for final prep and loading up the car to head back to Utah and race.

At MO’s Speed Shop and on their chassis dyno.

Fabricating the front belly pan was a fun project and got to use my bead roller for the first time on something useful. It really stiffens up that sheet aluminum. Attachments worked out perfectly to use existing factory bolts under the car to attach it other than three I had to drill into the engine cradle.

With front end aero improvements done I decided to tackle making a rear wing and started mocking up something this week. So far I have the flat deck of the wing cut out and the rear wicker bill piece mocked up. Also added 3 adjustable strut rods under the rear that support the wing up from the rear bumper. Next will be fabbing up the sides. I was starting to make a cardboard pattern with plans to cut out of sheet metal but then rummaging through my stash of aluminum pieces I found I had some actual side pieces made for a similar wing so I’ll see if I can adapt these.
I’m heading off to Bonneville this week for Speed Week spectating so this will need to get finished when I get back and ready for the trip back there to race in September.
It’s going better than I had expected so hopefully i have not bit off too big of a last minute task here and will get it done.

Continued progress today on the rear wing. Its been fun to create something from scratch and metal I’ve been collecting. Got to hammer form some aluminum angle and then use my sprinkler to create a curved end of said angle to match the curved wicker bill. After hand crimping a lot of rivets, some cutting and shaping and, drilling lots of holes the wing is basically complete except for dis-assembly and painting. Since I’m off to Speed Week tomorrow the final paint will have to wait until I’m back home. It’s designed for easy bolt onto my original deck lid to allow transport off the car and quick reassembly before racing. Hopefully it helps keep the rear end of the car stable at high speed.

I just caught up on reading your thread -- I've enjoyed your updates from Bonneville and really like the new shop build.

Your work on the Interceptor is looking good -- should easily get to 135 now!

I thought you said no huge aero alterations
I wasn’t going to do it then told myself to stop making excuses and stop being lazy and just got after it. Im a sucker for tackling last minute projects. I think it will all pass tech but if not it’s all bolt on so can be easily removed.

So, I’m at Speed Week, Bonneville Salt Flats and we’re off to an unusual start. It rained last night and this morning hard and then some more during the day. It’s now more like Lake Bonneville so there was no racing today and none planned for tomorrow. All the campers in the Bend of the Road were stuck in the mud and had pretty sloppy sleeping conditions. Hoping the sun comes out tomorrow and some breeze to dry things off and maybe get some racing in this week.

You probably have the same back here at home. We just got a big storm come through.
Got home yesterday and I figured it rained here too as my previously burned out grass was all green again. Bummer that all racing was cancelled but I still had a great time there visiting with a couple of my kids and helping them out a little. Now praying for warm breezy weather out there to dry it off before the end of the month. My scheduled racing event is World of Speed starting September 7th but its starting to look doubtful. This goes with the territory and if 2022 is washed out then we’ll be back in 2023.

That's too bad you didn't get to see racing this year.

Our grass for August is the greenest I can remember.

So, this day started out with more bad news. The USFRA, event organizers for the upcoming World of Speed went out and inspected the conditions and had to make the call to cancel the event for this year. This is what I have been working towards all year so now I get to feel first hand what many other race teams have experienced in the past when nature rains you out. The salt flats are still mostly under water and no way will they be usable for this year.

B64BB03A-04EF-4283-A857-DD2AA83C927F.jpeg11B79867-F990-41E2-9AE5-2A27FEE2F961.jpeg

You can see one person standing in 3-4 inches of water at where the starting line should be. And a photo they took from the nearby mountains of standing water spread over 5-7 miles of surface. Sad for all racers but good for the salt and it will heal itself for next year.

Then better news came out this afternoon as the ECTA (based in Arkansas) announced a fall event at the Blytheville airport. They run 1/2 mile, 1 mile and 2K events on the same runway. That will run Sept29 thru Oct 2 and I immediately registered. I will run in the 1 mile event and get some good experience with my car after all the upgrades this year. And its less than half the driving distance from Michigan to Arkansas vs driving to western Utah.
So I went from sad to excited and glad I didn’t yet put everything away for a year.
