My wife and I bought our first home in February 2015. Unfortunately, it only has a single car garage (roughly 10x23) which I've quickly grown to love and hate. I've cluttered it up to the point where it feels cozy and it's a cool place to hang out and drink beer, but it's frustrating that I don't have the space to actually work on a car in there unless I'm just fiddling around in the engine bay. It's pretty cramped when I have a vehicle parked in it, so I've quickly learned the importance of maximizing space.

Here's my house/garage, to give you an idea of the layout...

Here's what it looked like when I moved in. Pretty bare...

This small piece of panel board was all that was in there...

Our house was built on a slab, so we have no basement which means storage space is hard to come by. I have a shed in the back yard that's full of firewood, the lawn mower, landscaping tools, and various other things. I try and keep the garage pretty clear. I usually have my Camaro parked in there, but I frequently move it into the driveway when I need to use the garage for projects or just hanging out or whatever.

I'm trying to improve my garage without spending much money; I would be surprised if we are still living here for more than a few more years. We really want to move out to the country with a little more space (and a much bigger garage). We live in a suburb just west of Columbus and the traffic here is unbearable at times.

In the meantime, I want to make the most out of what I got. Pics to follow.....

Some stuff, like the folding chairs and cooler, aren't normally in there.

I got that rolling tool chest for a smokin deal back when I worked at Lowe's.....

I have an extended arm TV mount that is attached to a hinged board, so I can flip it around and watch TV from the rear patio if I want. I'm sure others have done something similar before, but I had never heard/seen anything like this.....

I'm not sure where to go from here, but I have several ideas. I want to repaint the floor, repaint the finished wall, and tidy up the rest so it doesn't look so "thrown together" if you know what I mean. And I definitely want to add more lighting.

We just moved from Hilliard to Grove City a little over a year and a half ago.
Glad to know there's some other GJers close by!

Hey Yoo

How warm does it stay in the winter?

maybe insulate the remaining wall's and finish it out with drywall and a coat of white paint will help with making appear brighter?

or due a wall of pallet wood? looks decent enough and would be cheap to due.
plus then you can hang what you want where ever you want.

just a couple of Ideas would give it a more finish look plus what you already mentioned.

cut your teeth on some simple stuff on this garage and learn what works and doesn't then when your on the 2nd garage you know better what you want to due and how to do it as well!

I Like to Camaro as well a classic look and color for that car!

how much room with the Camaro in there?
can you even walk around the car at all?

A Florida fan in Ohio State country! You must have some interesting conversations.

Definitely. I've grown up here in Columbus but I've been a Gator fan all my life, so I'm used to it

Very nice! I've been in Hilliard most of my life, and quite frankly I'm annoyed by how crowded it's getting. They build a ton of stuff everywhere but don't build the roads to support all of it. Ideally we would like to move out to Plain City, West Jeff, London, etc. and get a place with a couple acres.

It stays warm enough for the most part. This time of year it's usually in the 50's give or take a little, depending on how cold it is outside. I thought about drywall and insulation, but ultimately decided it wasn't worth the time/effort/money. I don't spend much time out there in the winter, and when I do, I have a propane heater that gets it toasty in minutes.

I originally thought about covering the stud walls with sheets of pegboard, but decided against that. I really like your suggestion about pallet wood, that's something I haven't thought of and I'm definitely intrigued by the idea.

The Camaro fits in there pretty well actually, it's pretty narrow along the sides and back, but still enough room to walk by on one side without rubbing against it. There's plenty of space in the front as well, when it's parked in there I still have a lot of room to sit at the bench or get in my toolbox or cabinet or whatever. I'll grab a pic for reference.

I had a Buick Park Avenue before the Camaro, and a Caprice before that, and they were a much tighter squeeze.

Hey Yo, thanks for the compliments on the Camaro!

I've had a few of them, and enjoyed them all. This one is an '89 IROC-Z with the TBI 305 and automatic. Definitely not my first choice of engine/trans but I really can't complain, I traded my $800 dollar Park Avenue for it :D

Well, I got tired of the clutter......

So I hung some OSB and disassembled some free pallets I picked up. Here's how it's looking now....

There's still a lot of things I want to change, but this is a big step in the right direction.

Nice setup, I'm in the process of setting up a small garage an d will be stealing some ideas from you. It's a barely 2 car garage and I have my side to play with so I think about the same square footage as yours. Alot of threads on here about saving space seem to involve millionaire budgets and lifts that retract into the floor that aren't exactly realistic for me so this is a good start!

Gray, tan will just show dity/grime/oil

Ehh, maybe. I guess gray might hide dirt better than tan. Either way, it needs coated with something. It's painted gray right now but it's worn off in a lot of spots. I would get the stuff with the flakes in it.....

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Ol...VOC-One-Car-Garage-Floor-Kit-301245/206495769

^ They sell that stuff in tan or gray. If I repaint the wall white with light gray at the bottom, I'll go with gray. But I've considered an off-white (light tan) wall with brown at the bottom, which would look better with a tan floor. It looks good in my head, but there's a chance it might not look good in reality. :dunno:

I repainted the finished wall. It's "white" at the top (not nearly as bright as I thought it would be) with silver at the bottom, and an orange stripe in the middle......

I still need to coat the floor (I've decided on gray) but everything else is satisfactory for the time being.....

I still have some tinkering to do here and there. Especially with this area to the right of the dart board....

A buddy of mine is moving, and he has this "work bench" (I think it's actually some kind of table designed for restaurant/kitchen use) that he didn't want to take with him to his new house. He offered it to me for free, so I decided to take it and see if I could make it work.

This was my old setup....

42839441864_5bfe5dda26_b.jpg

I had this "bar" type of thing that I was using as a workbench, but it wasn't very functional as much more than just storage. So away it goes.....

42651897595_9fd7fa9cef_b.jpg

New bench in place and a few things rearranged. Already feeling MUCH more "ergonomically correct"....

41748962160_e5b96006b4_b.jpg

Starting to come together.....

41748962240_d34c30ea75_b.jpg

I still have some work to do, but so far I am a lot happier with the new setup. The new bench/table is a lot more usable than the bar, and everything on this end of the garage is now easily within reach.
