20-29 mm Sockets

It seems that most 1/2 metric socket sets don't contain many sockets in the 20-29 range. Why is that? Are they not used much?

Sometimes they may contain 21, 24, 27, but most of the time they stop at 19.

Above 19, I've used 21, 22, 24 & 27. I dont have a 28 or 29 wrench or socket yet. It may not hurt to have them, but I still have not used a 25 on anything.

I do know a 29mm wrench is needed for a New Holland 8770 tractor somewhere becuase my one boss said he needed one for the fan clutch (I thin that was it).

You need to check other brands. although 8-19mm may handle 90% of tasks, I use 21, 22, 24, often. 27mm ocassionaly and 30-36 on axle nuts.

There are many brands that carry the larger sizes besides the tool trucks such as Proto, Williams, Grey Pnuematic, and sunex. Craftsman even has them in 12 point 1/2 and 3/4 drives.

A couple sets from Grey Pneumatic ..1326M and 1326MD have a full set from 10mm to 36mm except for the 31mm

People usually just buy the one or two they need in larger sockets or wrenches. Above 19mm I think 27mm is about all my cars need, with the exception of some like hoses that need a wrench instead of a socket.

I needed a 50MM for the front locking hubs on my rig, (Asian) I bought a 2" and called it good...

I agree; buy them for a specific need...

24mm and 27 is popular sizes... crank bolts, axle nuts etc... have never come across the need for anything other then those 2 over 20mm sockets... wrenches on the other hand i need those up to 32mm

Depends on what you are working on though.

I have sockets up to 32mm in chrome and impact for 1/2 drive. I use them more for installing seals.

My 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee uses 22mm lug nuts.

Why they couldn't just stick with the 21mm nuts I have no idea. Must have gotten the 22s cheaper.

It's a dodge thing. Lots of dodges use them along with many other large domestic 8 lug trucks.

Counter sprocket retaining nut on mx bikes are 28 or 29mm. Rear axle nuts, stem nuts, fork caps are all in the upper 20's. I have had a few cars that had 32 or 36mm axle nuts. I have impact sockets 10-36mm.

Some sets are more comprehensive than others. Many 1/2" drive sets give every mm from about 10 to 15, and then finish with 17 19 22.

I've got one more extensive set that gives every mm from 10 to 22, and then finishes with 24 26 28 30 32 34 36.

Start getting above the 24mm mark upto 29mm and you way want to go the next drive size up (3/4).

I toy with Subaru's, the crank pulley bolts on those are 22mm. The axle nuts are usually 32mm or the newer ones sometimes 36mm. Many suspension fasteners are 19mm but that is not really an odd size. I got that Grey Pneumatic set in 1/2 inch that has all sizes up to around 40mm I think it has. But I did buy 3/4" drive chrome 32mm 6pt for the axle nuts.

On Subaru so far the only sizes I have seen/needed are 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm, 19mm, 22mm, 32mm.

21mm, 24mm, and 27mm are pretty common on most compact utility tractors. I have a Mitsubishi diesel tractor (Case clone) that uses a lot of these. SK seems to have a good selection of the larger metric sizes. YMMV.

i hate when dodges come in with there crappy lug nuts.. have to pound on the socket to get it on sometimes...


thats why someone made a 22.5mm socket! lol stupid dodge

Tahoes and suburbans and whatnot have been using 22mm lugnuts for quite awhile as well.

I have seen 90's Toyota work truck, converted type with dual rear tires, with 23 mm lug nut.
Land Rover uses 27 mm lug nut.

On Dodge with Chrome caps; when the cap of 19mm lug nut comes off, 18 mm socket is perfect fit.
I use little bit of oil on socket when working on Dodge truck chrome caps. I use 22 mm socket.

I've got a co-worker that has an deep well SO impact socket set that is dual marked, and I'd swear one is marked 7/8 / 22mm. I was surprised when I saw it. Anybody else have one?

Edit: I searched Ebay, etc. and it looks like SO does it all the time.

The new Jeeps and cars are NOT 7/8ths. They are 22mm. At least, they are until someone uses a 7/8ths on them.

The trucks ARE 7/8ths. At least, they are until someone uses a 22mm on them.

There is a difference, and if a tech doesn't know the difference, his mistake will be felt for years across every shop that vehicle visits.
