Over the years I have accumulated lots of fasteners and it is upsetting to me when my projects are halted because I don't have what I need.
I agree

, tons of fastener but not the right oneDon't forget the washers, lock washers, t-nuts, carriage bolts, wing nuts![]()
A few weeks back I was looking in my bolt bin (card files) and noticed that I was getting low on a bunch of stuff. I stopped in at my bolt supplier and asked for a few different things when the idea of just picking up $20 worth each week hit me. So now I have a list of what I like to keep on hand and each week before heading to the lake/shop I stop in and get part of that list.
Last week it was 25 3/8x1 grade 5 bolts, 50 3/8 nuts, and 10 3/8x1 carriage bolts for a project all of which came to just under $10 so I added 25 5/16x1 and 25 5/16x1.5.
I don't know what I am going to knock off the list this week yet but I kind of like doing it this way, it only takes me 20 seconds to dump the bags in the proper bin so I am not spending 10 minutes screwing around with a big box of bolts. And I don't feel bad about dropping $20 on this each week where in the past I would make my list and drop a few hundred to re-stock when I was running low.
If I know I am going to need 10,20 or more for a project I will pick them up so I don't kill my supply all in one shot.
I am still deciding where to stop, I like to have a good selection on hand from 1/4x3/4-1/4x2.5 to 1/2x1-1/2x2 in the smaller sizes about 25 to 30 and in the larger around 10 of each in grade 5. I don't stock grade 8 and in larger sizes I just have what is left over from projects.
I am trying to figure out washers as well, how useful are things like star style lock washers, I have always stocked split washers for locking nuts in place. Then there are fender washers I guess I should have a few 10 or so in each size.
I know a lot of you say just run to the hardware store but for me that is a hour and a half round trip plus what ever time it takes in the store, I hate to waste $20 in fuel and 2 hours of my time for a few fasteners.

Looks like Nutts should put $20 a week towards a camera from this century.![]()
I'm sold! Any links or recos? When I was race prepping my buggy in January and February I was making daily trips to ACE Hardware for grade 8 bolt packs (bolt, washer, nuts). Depending on sizes, these were costing $2-$3 per bolt pack. Needless to say, this was getting old and I was tired of not having what I needed after hours. The owner of the race team I'm on has a giant Lista bolt bin in the race shop that is always fully stocked........you NEVER have to leave the shop for hardware.
I said screw it, and decided to pick up a bolt bin no matter what it cost. To my surprise, I was able to get a 40 slot steel bin stocked with grade 8 fine hardware in 1/4"-1/2" for $236 out the door. It included various lengths of bolts, washers, lock washers, and nuts. All made in USA, including the bolt bin. I also added a box of nylocks in each size, since I use those in abundance on my buggy. I went from paying $5 for 3 bolts to paying $5 for a whole box.
In the end, the bolt bin has been some of the best money I have spent. It keeps me working and not shopping. My codriver helps me prep and he lives 30min away, so our time together is more productive when we don't have interruptions. We don't reuse hardware for safety reasons, so we're more likely to grab new stuff and not cut corners when we have it on hand.
Another example is I remounted a jack on my parents travel trailer. It was 107 outside, I was working on black asphalt, and sweating my *** off. Instead of having to leave to go get hardware for 20min, I walked over to my bolt bin and grabbed 2 different size bolt packs and finished the job. That hardware alone would've been $6 or more.

It pisses me off when l have to stop and go to town to buy fasteners. When l buy them l always buy extra - at least a handful. Here TSC sells them by the pound. It has saved many many trips into town![]()
What I find is the more I have the more I take. Since my organized storage system isn't, I tend to put what doesn't get used in a misc bin when I am done. This is what leads to a big mess for me.
In my small area, we have a Tractor Supply, a Rural King and a Farm & Fleet that all offer this. Really good way to quickly build a good surplus of hardware. Some places sell nuts, bolts and washers, by the pound.
