So, I picked up this 8-piece combination wrench set (3/4" to 1-1/4") at the Early Bird flea market this morning. For a lark, I thought I'd have some fun with it by not immediately revealing the mfgr when I reported it on the 2018 Garage Sale thread. Later I thought I'd have even more fun by opening it up to the rest of the board.

Let's see how long and how many questions it takes to identify it.

One yes-or-no question per GJ member/username.

Pic 1 is the photo from the 2018 Garage Sale thread.

Pics 2 through 5 have been marked-up to obscure the give-away markings.

Go!

Are they branded for a manufacturer of vehicles, motorcycles, or the like?

Frankly, I didn't know anything abut WILMAR when I bought them, and still don't know much even after reading a few things about them here on GJ, except they have a bad reputation. You wouldn't know it by these combination wrenches, which are fairly well-made and well-finished. I hardly ever buy anything but US made tools, and these are probably way outside of my time period (70's?), as well, but they were too complete and too good to pass up for peanuts at the flea market.

DING! DING! DING! DING! DING!
:bounce:  :bounce:

By my count, in 15 questions! Not bad, GJ, not bad at all.

And I was just about to ask if you guys needed a hint, planning to go back to jumbojak's question and say something about it being the right country.

It was the finish that told me Tata. I have a few of theirs in metric that I picked up in basically new condition with the same panel design and recessed size markings. The plating came off in sheets once they rode in a bag for a few weeks. Only the 19mm is remotely usable anymore.

It was the panels (raised and recessed) that drew me to this set from afar at the flea market to begin with, thinking they may have been a variety of 50's or 60's Barcalo-Buffalo or Lectrolite or Vlchek. As I got closer I knew they weren't, and then I was thinking Europe. I was surprised to see the forged-in INDIA marking.

I was about to say that I could put the set in a bag and keep it in the truck and time will tell if the inferior plating is a manufacturing trait endemic to the entire country of origin, but, Tata is relatively new, and I could be wrong, but I believe these Wilmar's have already been around for at least 40+ years and seem to be holding up pretty good.

Now that I stripped them of the blue paint remains I am wondering if that was original. (And my Sixth Chakra is telling me it was reminiscent of the Holi Festival of Colours and I maybe should've left it alone.) :)
