200 Amp Disconnect

I have a 200 amp disconnect that's mounted on the outside of my house. From there it goes to a 40 space panel inside the garage. I want to run wire in pvc from the outside panel to my new shop. Its about a 90' run from panel to panel. Problem is that the outside panel only has one slot. Question is , what panel can I use that is for exterior use and also has enough slots to run wire to shop. I didn't want to splice it because I figured that if shop tripped it would trip the whole house too. Shop will have a 200 amp panel also with 30 slots. No code where i live but still want it to be safe. Thanks in advance.

Post some pics.

Is this disconnect a meter main/combination panel or??

Why not run feeder to house panel?

If theres only one breaker space, u will have to change the panel to one with more space.

To run 2 200 amp panels from a 200 amp service, you will have to splice it. Could upgrade your service to 400 amps then double lug the meter and set a new disconnect for your second panel. This option gets costly.

Have you done a load calc on the existing service panel. And the new future panel? Do you really need 200 amps out there?

Correction, the panel on the new garage will be 100 amp. The pole that has meter has the same 200 amp panel that i have on house wall and im wanting to go off the one on the wall. I havent done a load test but it will just be used by me and only on spare time. (Welder, air compressor, grinder, lighting) .

In my house i have electric washer, dryer, fridge, oven, microwave, central air and heat, and all the lights. My monthly bill is around $45. Shop will have a 220 welder and air compressor. All the other stuff will b 110 and t5 lighting. I wont have everything running max ever.

200 amp feed through would give you the extra breaker spaces to feed the shop, you would still be limited to 200 amps overall.

What do you have for loads in the house and what are you planning to add in the shop? If you need over 200 amps total you are going to be looking at a service upgrade.

If i went this route, would i use 2 slots and run 200 amp wire to 100 amp panel in new shop. And if shop trips will it trip the house also or just the breaker going to shop? Thanks in advance.

You don't need to run 200A wire from a 200 main lug feed thru, a 100 breaker at the shop will protect the wire. You would need number 1 alum for 100A, if you were going to feed it from spaces and a breaker from the main you could use whatever size you wanted as long as the correct breaker was used.

There is a 200 amp main breaker feeding the bussing with lugs directly connected to the buss. The 200 amp feeder to your house panel would come off these lugs. Then you would also install a 100 amp breaker in two of the breaker spaces allowing you to run your 100 amp feeder out to the shop.

This setup would most likely be the best all around for your situation.
