Looking at putting a 200 amp service in my shop. I have a 325 amp meter socket with a double lug set up at the house so looking to pull from there, the distance is 400 feet to shop. What size conduit and wire should I be using and is a 200 amp service really necessary, using the standard air compressor, 220 welder, etc.

Thanks.

Edit: I am not an electrician so I may be way off base with this.

400' is a long run. You're going to be looking at some large wire to keep the voltage drop manageable.

At 400' the minimum you'd need is 350MCM Cu or 500MCM Al. You could get away with a smaller neutral if the legs are well balanced at the shop but it's still going to cost a pretty penny.

Is reevaluate your needs- seriously doubt you need 200a if this is a home (and/or) one man shop.
