200 amp sub fed from 200 amp main?

Is there a code against this? I haven’t been able to find anything definitive in the code book regarding this. Schneider makes the QO2200 quad size breaker that will fit in my main panel.

Is the panel listed for the desired breaker? Wire bending space is going to be real tight. Either one is a deal breaker if not listed for that panel or does not have the required wire bending space.

You lokely won't find a stab on breaker that high.

For me, a quad breaker rated at 150 amps was as good as it got for stab on's.

The breaker is made with angled terminals so bending isn’t necessary. I attached a photo of the sticker in my panel that says it can accept the 4 wide breakers. Take a look and tell me what you think.

Whether it is code compliant or not (I believe it most likely would be if the panel is listed for that breaker), I imagine it will be very difficult to pull off. You will lose 4 spaces in the panel and need to route some large, stiff, expensive cables through the panel, the wall and to wherever the sub is going to be mounted. I would take a long, careful look at whether I really needed a 200A feeder to the sub-panel.

I ran a full load simulation on my house not long ago. With everything I could reasonably get running, including all lights, 7.5 HP compressor, electric oven, dryer and 2 HVAC units, it only pulled 60 Amps on a 150 Amp service. The only things not running at the time were my welder and 250W per channel audio amp. Based on that, I am satisfied I'm not going to run out of current any time soon even if I were sandblasting, welding, drying clothes and baking cookies simultaneously while cranking DSotM at 11.

There should be a listing on the label that tells you what the max current per stab is.

But lets back up a step or 2.

What are the loads you will be running?

What is this feeding?

Have you done a load calc?

Are you sure you need 200a? Thats an awful lot of power.

If that breaker is really about $500, I think I would see if there is another way to do what you want?

Make the new panel the main and feed this one as a sub?
