Why does a 200 amp panel with breakers cost under $100 but a low tech manual transfer switch cost $400 - $600????

Volume, the residential market is very competitive, not as many transfer switches being sold, smaller market = higher co$t.

If you think that is bad, I ordered a 400 amp ats to prepare the new house for a generator...$2500 for the ats itself.

Instead of the low tech manual transfer switch can you use an even more "low-tech" interlock? Check your panel manufacturer. Some cost less than $50.

Yeah, the annoying thing is it's just a panel with an interlock, so seems like it should be cheaper.
But keep in mind those under $100 load centers are indoor, and this is an outdoor rated enclosure.
