I have a chance to pick this up for $200 bucks. But by no means am I a compressor expert. What do you guys think? Is it common to find service providers that would completely overhaul this. Or how easy would it be for me to get it in good shape? Supposedly it was working fine before the guy took it apart (to make it light enough to move it to the corner of his backyard). He claims it was originally a 3-phase, but he purchased a 1-phase Baldor motor for it. 80 gallon. Plate on the tank says 1987.

I'd forget about it. Storing the components on the ground is murder on internal parts. They look pretty corroded. There are better deals for $200 out there.

BTW -- it says Centurion on the tank -- just a rebranded model from one of the main manufacturers --

It does say Champion in small print

if it works good and he includes the new motor then its a deal.

or if the compressor head is good enough to clean up and put new seals in (and you can do the work) then it could still be a deal.

if you have to take anything somewhere for it to be done for you then the deal is lost.

do you need an 80 gal unit?
can you get by with one of the 60 gal units from the big stores?
my 60 gal unit (bought as a clearance return with full warranty after bieng checked out) only cost me $175. it is the type with the motor and a belt driven compressor head (not the oilless) and gives me all the air I need for my shop (even when sandblasting). I think these compressors new are still under $400
