Hey guys, recently moved to a new home. Called the town hall and i was told i can build up to a 2000sq ft building.. In your opinions what would be the ideal size/shape..? Square. Rectangle..? Not sure if i want 10 or 12ft ceilings ithor.. Maybe just a section of 12 ft incase i want a lift in the future.. That just seems like allot of extra space to heat during the winter.
I plan to put under the slab heating so that should help i would think. Any other ideas for my first garage i plan to build.. Still in the planning stages..

To give you shape, you have to tell us what you're using it for. If you own a big RV or boat, that configuration is different than a metal shop with a forge and room to park 4 cars...

FYI - with 16 foot eves, you can do a 14' door (high) - that is tall enough to park anything that can drive on the road. It's also the minimum height that's probably necessary for a mezzanine or doing a partial 2nd floor.

The size and shape of your property may drive your answer. Think: property line setbacks, slope, grade, drainage, etc. As dcg9381 states, go up- that way you can later build a mezzanine, but if you plan on that, remember to place a footer under your slab to support the mezzanine weight.

I got 2 places i can build. Place 1 is in the back section of the property. I can go roughly 40ft wide so i got room for setback and distance from the mound.. Rather flat back their
My other place would be right next to the house bassicly.. Off to the side, got some trees their that would need to be taken down. Flat ish their..
It will mostly be used to keep my toys in, extra cars.. Bassicly it would be storage/ shop.. I do like the mezzani e idea.. Didnt think of that..
Maybe 50k is what i was thinking.. If its in the back yard, i wont be poring a driveway.. But i may poor gravel for the tires only not the entire thing..

Knowing nothing else, I'd do a 40W x 50D with an 18' x 8' and a 10' x 10' (or 12') pair of doors on the front for vehicles with a man door on the side. I would also plan for a future partition 25' - 30' from the doors should you choose to do something cleaner or dirtier away from vehicles down the road.

i am 1800 sq ft shop size and like the layout for the most part . it was here when i moved in .

10x10 door shop left and 8x8 door right . shop is 12ft inside and SUPER tight with most 2 post lift brands for install . so do valted section if you plan a lift for a little extra head room .

the rest of the shop is 9ft 6in tall . its 50ft wide inside and 28ft deep . wish it was 34-46ft deep . i couldnt park my old tow truck / rollback inside when i was towing for work . sucked in the winter time .

i do have a 16ftx25ftdeep addition on the back and its a paint booth bay . its got a 8x8 door also inside the shop with filter panels for air flow . and its own side door .

my current plan is a 18ft wide by 16ft deep addition on the back of the work bay / tall section to make a tool storage room and get a lot of stuff out of the main shop i dont use every day .

pics of when i moved it and purchased the place . the 18ft width of the main bay with the lift works NICE . i have a huge work bench now down the whole left wall and can still walk between the lift post and bench and not hit anything . pulling axle shafts is no problem / tire rotations lots of room .

i use to be in a shop for 15+ years and its nice to be more open / layed out more in my shop compared to crammed in at shops were they just count lifts and cars .

I went 32x64 with doors on the 32' side so I can pull in long stuff if I need. One downside to that is I don't have a lot of shear strength with 2 big doors in each end. You could hoose door size/sizes, add distance between doors, and at least 4 ft on the each outside edge from exterior wall to door and that would be the minimum width. Take 2000/width to get your length.

I'd go 40x50, two doors on the 40ft end... maybe throw a smaller door on the 50ft side. My 20x50 had a 16ft on the front, a 9ft on the back & an 8ft on the side.

With a 40ft front I'd probably go with a 16ft regular height garage door & a 12x14.

I'd build next to the house. But I like it when my wife comes out to say something or see what I am doing. Not everyone does. Putting it near the house, I stay w/ max height doors at 8 ft because tall doors make it look too industrial park for me. I'd use scissor trusses in a section of it for room for a lift. This way it looks normal on the outside. I'd match all of the exterior as well as possible to the house. I don't mean it has to be identical but, for instance, T-111 can be painted to match whatever siding the house has.
