My 2005 Ram work truck (3.7L V6) started vibrating badly while driving and threw the driveshaft today. Appear to be a failed U joint. The shaft came completely off of both the transmission and rear drive case leaving the slip yoke and the rear yoke both installed. Can the shaft be installed either way as long as the yokes are phased correctly? There are no markings indicating direction. Thanks.

I would be replacing it. Most likely bent it when it launched

I’ve thought of that as well since posting this earlier. It looks fine but I know it doesn’t take much to throw it out of balance. I picked up 2 new U joints but haven’t installed them yet.

the manufacturer will emphatically tell you 'no', but on a 2 peice, sometimes the splines will only go on one way while being in phase though.
UIf any of the ears are tore up enough the bearing cap isn't a press fit, it isn't going to hold for long.

When I was dealing with a rear ended vibration on my 2005 dodge truck last summer, I thought it was my driveshaft after replacing the tires. Having called a couple salvage yards I was surprised how cheap they were, plus you will know right way if the replacement is good or not. In the end I had the original one rebalanced with new joints. Came out beautiful and was definitely balanced. In the end I still had vibration which turned out to be my rotors. Once replaced it was perfect!

Thanks all for the advice. I went ahead and pressed the new joints in but have not reinstalled the shaft. I’m going to call a few yards tomorrow and look at picking a new to me shaft.
