There are ssooooo many more tools and tool boxes there but I have a classic 78, kr537 and another top and bottom stack jam packet full of tools and I have no more room to work in my garage much less pack in more stuff or else I would've taken all the tools

this is probably the nicest one old one I own.
its approx. mid 40s.
it will house my vintage and heritage tools.

red bull- im gussing yer a chevy guy(by yer avatar). GM used quadrajets(quadrajunks) on way to many cars/trucks from the 50s to the 80s.
if you plan on using that carb on something gimme me yer address(in a PM).
ill send these to ya. youlle need 'em more than I do..
all my old cars I've put on CARTER AFBs

I jumped the gun. now that I look back at the pic it does look like an AFB.
carters and rochesters were different animals. carter AFBs were much better.
AFB of course meant aluminum four bore. most people thought it was alum four barrel. I believe they stopped making CARTER carbs a few years ago. they are the same as edlebrock. they all say weber on them now.
don't trash it. if you can find the bore or CFM i'm sure someone that wants an orig for his '59 bel-air or '62 deville or '64 impala would love to have it. rebuild kits are still available.

What is that ratchet next the top of the pic? Looks interesting.

Looks like a refrigeration ratchet. It's a ratchet, with a few other things on there, all things that refrigeration technicians would use on A/C units, fridges and that sorta stuff.

the lens looks a little newer but its hard to say.

beatcad - it could be a car light. but theres two rectangles like the one shown in the pic, one on each side, and they piviot. My great uncle was big into fishing and hunting so I was thinking he used it as a spotlight on a fog gig boat or spotting animals haha but it looked old so I had to have it haha.
also heres a picture of what the carb says on it

I don't know anything about carbs really. I graduated from the GM ASEP program in 08 and while in school they said carbs are a dead technology and we would never need to know anything about them working in a dealership so I never learned about them. I will probably take this one apart just to see how it all goes together but im sort of hesitate to do it because the inside of this carb is super clean, like it has never been used.

when I saw that lamp and how it mounts I was thinking it was like a brass model T lamp. its close, but not exactly
I had to search to make sure I wasn't crazy.
still, it's damn cool.

My First Posting

So, in typical manner, I've been a longtime lurker, and have finally decided to post a thing or two. Here's the result of my first estate sale ever. It was about five minutes away, so I had to check it out. I spent a total of $1. There was a little surprise in one of the drawers. Obviously, you're seeing everything after clean-up.

And the surprise: a set of Craftsman Circle H 1/4" sockets and breaker. I find it interesting that two sockets are 8-point.

Beatcad...that carb was made by Carter for Rochester....seems Rochester couldn't keep up with the demand and farmed a bunch of them out to Carter.
So..it's still a Rochester Quadrajet. A Carter AFB has the same size primary and secondary throttle blades where a Quadrajet has small primary blades and much larger secondaries.

Another estate sale, everything bought for $10: SK box with ratchet/sockets; Craftsman USA, Husky USA, Proto Challenger USA, and some generic Tawain sockets; a set of Felo Ergonic screwdrivers (which are awesome); and a small USA Vise-Grip.

Thanks. You may really like these as much as I do: individual interlocking drawers made by Globe-Weis. I believe they're from the 60's. I got 17 in total for $15.

Yep, Nice find! And not that surprising to find 8 pt in a set that was probably made in the late 30's to mid 40's. that "Long C" Craftsman logo is distinctive.

Oh yeah! Here's another estate sale result. I spent an hour and a half waiting in the rain, just to get in to rummage through an old farmhouse/mansion. I think, for sure, I'm hooked.

An 18" USA Vise-Grip; a 3/8 Craftsman USA Torque Wrench, from the 60's I think; and a couple of punches, one no name and the other Stanley USA. Total cost, $3.

Then I picked up this ice pick for 25 cents at a Habitat ReStore. It's heavy and well balanced. Southern New England Ice Company; thought it was interesting. We'll see if I have a use for it?

Um, that second "punch" is actually a railroad spike...

Ice picks can get a lot of use in the shop. But a suggestion: strip an inch or so of insulation off of some 12 ga. copper wire and use that as a "sheath" for the tip. Saves getting punctured as often, and not nearly as bulky as an old wine cork. (the usual "safety")

The torque wrench is likely 70's or later.

And that Enderes is a 6-in-1 IIRC or is it old skool 4-in-1? And it alos seems to be PH2 and PH3 on the philips end instead of the now common PH1 and PH2 used currently. I found that oddly interesting.

And it matches the red pocket clip Enderes sent last fall.

It's 4 in 1 and you are correct about the bit being PH2 and PH3.

Lotsa guys with mild blacksmithing expertise hammer these out into neat knives. Search the internet for "railroad spike knife" and you'll see the beauty that lies in those small picks of steel...

Good stuff, On the SK kit. Those drawers are handy. I have a stack bolted to the side of my box as a poor mans side cabinet. They are handy for bulky items like tape, string, gule, etc.

Those are great drawer units!

I like old computer punch card cabinets. They are made to take a lot of weight, have roller slides, and are a good size for sorting stuff that isn't bulky. I have drawers for files, air hose fittings, small pipe fittings, grinder discs, etc. Most of these cabinets have full-width drawers with a center divider. Some have slots in the dividers so you can make custom-size compartments. They are much in demand, since they are so handy.

I also like lateral file cabinets. I use them for bulky power tools and other items too big to fit in common toolbox drawers. If you are patient, you can pick these up cheap. I pay $15-30 for a 4-drawer unit, and $10-15 for a 2-drawer type. Bolt the 4-drawer units to the wall for safety, unless they have the feature that prevents opening more than one drawer at a time!

Red Bull, Thumper is right...your Carter-built Quadrajet was built by Carter to Rochester Quadrajet specs, when Rochester couldn't keep up with demand. There will be a round dime-sized metal disc pressed into the side of that carb, with a 7 or 8-digit code to ID the original application. I can help you ID it from that code.

Years ago I wrote a lengthy book called CHEVY V8 CASTING NUMBERS 1955-93, which included Carter, Rochester, and Holley carb numbers and ID characteristics, and covers hundreds of Quadrajet codes for Chevys. However, as far as I know, most Chevy Quadrajet fuel inlets were aimed toward the passenger-side fender, while Buick, Olds, and Pontiac Q-jets had fuel line holes facing straight ahead (Caddy's were usually to the right side, like Chevy). Looking at your first photo, I think the fuel inlet might be facing front.

There is also a date code on your carb somewhere.

Red Bull, your brass light is indeed an old car headlight, which has been converted from carbide gas or kerosene to a sealed beam. This pretty much kills value to car restorers, but it's incredibly hard to match up a pair of old brass headlights one at a time anyway. If you want to sell or trade it, I have a bunch of them hanging around my garage for decoration. Maybe I'll have some tools or sumpin' that you might want. Let me know.

I went to 2 shop closing sales in the same town on the same opening day. I was torn apart trying to decide what one to go to first via craigslist ads. I made the better choice by going to the auto repair shop in town first. line was out the door to the street. everyone who entered walked out with a fruit box stuffed full. from what I saw the prices were unreal.

when it was my time to get in I snagged a few items that were decent but not killer prices. 2nd sale was also good but less desirable stuff. still managed to dig through and find some nice pieces for cheap

Stopped in at the local thrift store on my way home from work to see what was new.

Blue Point 8 oz. BPH, 10" Ridgid pipe wrench and a Red Devil putty knife. $3 for all.

Last weekends' finds:


Delta Shopmaster bench grinder (runs great!), new 10" Dewalt Blade gen purpose, used 10" dewalt finishing blade, and a cool Proto Chisel, Dewalt Recip Saw (terrible exterior shape but runs strong, probably a frankenstein meld of two different saws haha), Johnson torpedo level, air connections, sawzall blade and a nice American made 3" shackle (not pictured).

...And my absolute favorite of the find:

Lufkin Rule Co. chrome clad measuring tape, 50 ft with leather cover inscribed "U.S. ARMY AIR CORPS". From world war 2, (found comparisons on ebay for around $50. Made me very happy! Sad to think it probably was a hand-me down from someone who didn't care to keep their father's/uncle's/grandfather's old tools. Guy at the garage sale was a jerk, didn't feel bad giving it a new home.
