2014 Garage sale thread!

I went to 2 different garage sales today. First one, I got to way too late. The guy said they had buckets of sockets and wrenches that they sold for like 5 bucks a bucket when they opened. I looked around and found both the wrenches for .50 each and then the fire extinguisher for $2. It needs to be re certified but it will work great for a future baja bug im going to build.

The second sale was on my way home from napa and I just happened to see the one sign they had out. It was FULL of tools. Lots of HF stuff but it had a few gems mixed in. I walked around and found the puller which I have needed one many times over and just never bought one. Its an import but Ive seen many cheaper looking ones and I got it for $5.

Then as I was getting ready to leave, I saw something big and shinny off to the side of one of the tables. I walked over to it, asked how much, and before she was done saying the price, it was in my hand. Got it for $20

Its an SK 2'' wrench stamped C 64. this sumbitch is heavy!

I started collecting big and unusual wrenches last summer (because of this site) so this will make an excellent addition.

I still have the box and its been sitting exactly where i left it when it came home. Its actually much nicer then i remember with the paint being a bit nicer then yours but the chrome on the drawer pulls was the bad part. They have blisters and flaking chrome on more then one of them. The extra holes were for a locking hasp, you know, for additional security.

The previous owner was building aerospace components for military jets/planes so it was probably specified by the govt to make his toolbox "more secure"

This score is not from an estate sale but another local scrap yard that i have yet to finish hunting on.

Found way in the back inside a propane bottle cage, these 2 were begging me to take them home. I passed on a Ridgid 300 machine die head since it was rusted shut. I use them daily at work but since i couldn't tell if there was any slop, it makes me wonder why it was tossed away in the scrap bin.

The pipe cutters set me back a whopping 7.00 for the pair I have spare wheels at work but so they are complete but its gonna take some work to make them pretty again.

Slim as slim gets for me today. The temp. was decent, but the rain set in. Tomorrow is supposed to be more promising. Let's hope.

The channel locks are pretty old, and though pretty used they are fully functional with decent jaws. Oh yeah, it was only a buck. The S/O A159 door handle removal tool was a no brainer at $1. So, even though the pickens were anorexic for me I spent $2, and spent the day with my son.





Here you can see the patent date is '53.

Smooth as silk and runs for a couple minutes after you turn it off. 65 bucks and the treadmill motors, I got two of em, were free. I'd like to find the side cover for the left side.

Post up better pictures and measurements, I have one I just put in the scrap pile!

Some 1/4dr SK, Mac wrenches, some Bonney gold award wrenches, a Snap-on charging system analyzer and some Bonney gold award 1/4dr pieces. Also an OTC #615 pliers, anyone know what these are for??

I think in a couple weekends I"m going to take a drive out east and visit the Detroit area to experience your estate sales.. You're always coming up with SO items--not that I'm so concerned with the brand--but your other quality items are always nice. If nothing else--just to feel out another city and the offerings from the people who once lived there..

Nice haul guys. I went to my first actual estate sale during the sale instead of before when I usually know the person or the family. showed up 15 minutes early and they had a list going with 30 names on it already. I showed up for a Wilton Bullet C1 vise that looked almost new and knew it wouldn't last so left and went to work.

I showed up at the end of the days sale and sorted through some of the stuff and kicked myself for not staying earlier when the actual nice tool boxes were still there. might not have got them if the guy buying the vise had some deep pockets or other tool guys got up early too, but I still did pretty well for $55 I think.

some of these are going to be keepers in my main everyday box and some of these I have no idea what the heck they are used for so had to grab for the guys at GJ to check out.

this is the neatest little box with a small 1/4 inch Plumb breaker so I'll clean it up and let it reside in my tool box as I find the missing sockets to fill it up. For $2 I can deal with some dirt and missing sockets.

I think they were 9/16 & 1/2 but can't remember exactly! I've had several others in a drawer awaiting the missing pieces and lo and behold they complete my set!

Not a buying day for me. This weekend I am selling. Had quite a good 1st day and hoping tomorrow follows suit. I cleared out a bucket of all the Taiwan, etc sockets and a similar amount of various wrenches. Oddly the name brands did not move even though I price them cheap enough. Maybe tomorrow. I did sell a couple of carry boxes for reasonable prices.

Let's just say-the price he had on the ad was more than fair for the whole setup--and I didn't badger him on the price for splitting the setup..

It looks a bit small, but could it be an antenna nut removal tool? I have a kit with several different sized ones that look like this. You'd be surprised how different one size/style is from the next on cars/trucks.

Hit a few sales today.

First one netted a Warren-Teed 12 pound sledge hammer (not pictured) for $4. The handle was just an old tree branch LOL. After doing a quick wire wheeling I was comparing it to my other old one which was an Iron City 10 lb. Since I had never looked up the Iron City one before a little research showed that Warren Tool Group that made my 12 lb head actually bought out Iron City and kept on making the same tools.

Next stop was an estate sale so no dickering but found several goodies.
NOS Craftsman 7" sanding and grinding discs that will go well with my Crown label sander-grinder, Craftsman Puller, Long C 1"-15/16" open end wrench, Sears penetrating oil, cool offset pipe wrench, 2 small Ridgid pipe wrenchs, S-K Tools long shaft driver with bits in the handle, Proto flat blade, small no-name green and red clamp on vise, like new pre 1963 Coleman lantern in the box, Dupont auto polish and Eagle oil can with the wide anti-tip base.
Mobil Pegasus leather coasters and Mobil file card box, a cool ********* curvy wrench, base molding pry bar and for Jeff Moss an older Klein linesmans pliers and a Corbin padlock with key. Total $44

The next estate sale I walked in and there was a nice little vise bolted to the workbench for $10. Guy in charge said no one had bought it yet so I started looking for a flathead screwdriver. Guy had just picked up the toolbox full of vintage Backhawk tools groan!! I spotted a cool little tape measure and bougght it from him for a $1 and borrowed a screwdriver to remove the vise. I picked up a mid 60's Craftsman Crown label hand carry box in very nice conditon, no tools just electrical supplies and stated my pile with that and the vise. Also grabbed a Craftsman oil can, 2 saws and vintage pruning shears. A couple of small saws and an unbranded sliding bevel square and it is all sitting on a blue excersize mat that will go in the back of the Excursion for emergency wrenching LOL. Also picked up a Dunlap hand dill and square, another small vise in red thsi time and some wood shims. Total $20.50

Made my last stop, not much tools but picked up a USA made dust pan, Ross mfg compound action plers, WD-40 and one of my favorites of the day, vintage Craftsman Vanadium screwdriver in mint shape, $4 total.

Got home and realized my larger vise was missing. Called back to estate company and they said they woukd check on it. After some thinking on my part realized I had not even paid for it, SOME DIRTBAG SNAKED IT OUT OF MY PILE!

Oh well had a good day anyways LOL. The missing vise was like a Littlestown exposed screw vise and had the usually missing slip on pipe jaws. It was an off brand and I can't even remember the name.

That is a broken tap extractor. They come in 2-3 or 4 flutes and all sizes depending on the tap.
How they work is you blow/clean out the chips in the broken taps flutes and insert the extractor down those same flutes. Then gently try to work the tap loose until it comes out. Yours is for a 4 flute 7/16 tap.
If you try to horse the tap out you may snap the fingers off. They work pretty good but sometimes you have to go slow with them.

Not much out there around here this time of year, and the weather hasn't helped. There was a small estate sale today that I went to, just to get out of the house for a few minutes. Other than some Delta/Homecraft tools that I didn't need (tablesaw, scrollsaw, jointer), I didn't see anything that interesting.

I did pick up an unmarked hammer (possibly Craftsman by the red stain left on the handle), a 1/16" Cman WF punch, a Cman WF screwdriver, and an old Dart wallet w/ light weight darts. I only spent $1.75.

What I found over two estate sales.
Craftsman long C 1/2" drive ratchet, breaker bars and some sockets.
CM vise grips, been seeing a lot of these lately.
Cornwell 3/8" ratchet, ext. and socket.
Mac ext. marked Sabina, OH. First time seeing one.
Indestro hex ratchet and sockets
A Hins Dale hex ratchet, socket and speeder, never heard of this one.
Assortment of C clamps, can't pass up these for $.25 each, all US.
$ .25 hole saws.
Another $ 2 estwing and vice grip, never know when the old supply will run out.
And other misc sockets and stuff.

Some stuff from an auction this morning and a stop at two second-hand stores a couple days ago.

The tool box on the pull cart was $5 and contained a few odd SAE deep sockets from CMan, Thorsen and Snap-on as well as two battery cable pullers, a couple of battery terminal brushes, a tubing cutter and a cool old bottle opener with a Bakelite handle. I gave a buck for the perforated metal tray for parts washing.

Sorting through the bins at first store yielded a couple of Snap-on deep sockets, three Husky USA 8-point sockets, a Husky USA spark plug socket with insert, a CMan 3/8" to 1/4" adapter, Williams 1/2" drive 3/4" deep impact socket and Cornwell 1/2" drive 18mm deep impact socket. The sockets were spendy at .25 each. Also a handful of wrenches for $2, from top to bottom; King ****, Proto and Hazet. I don't know who made the other three but I'm sure someone here will recognize the logo and clue me in.

The second store yielded a Proto 3/8" universal, 6" Husky USA 3/8" extension and a US made Vice Grip plier.

New member, long-time lurker. I've been hitting garage sales weekly for about a year how, and had some amazing finds in this time. I'm not going to hog the thread to show all of that off, so here's just the new stuff.

I hit a bunch of garage sales this morning. I started out early, but hit pay dirt later in the day. From 3 garage sales (the best of which was unlisted), for ~$40 total, I got what is pictured below. Among this is a Stanley 806 bedrock plane (which from what I understand is exceedingly rare), another unidentified (but newer) Stanley plane, several Wiss aviation snips and shears, some J H Williams wrenches and Channellock pliers, clamps, files, etc. The Stanley 806 is in amazing shape (no rust whatsoever), with the exception of the handle, which I am almost done making a replacement for.

Heading to the flea market tomorrow (for the first time!), hoping for similar luck.

Yeah, but I'm guessing it had some sort of long handle to maneuver it around....or did you just wing it as hard as you could to get it to the next work area???

The OP cleared it up for me. I thought that the box had casters wheels on it, but after re-reading the original post I realized that it was a cart that the box is sitting on top of.
