I just got picked by a Bluebolt! :willy_nil Always cool meeting like minded people but to put a face with a name and handshake was really great!

Yea I got a chance to stop by Nine's shop before I headed back to Shreveport.

Yesterday after stopping by the auction where he was a I hit up a couple of yard sales, no tools but picked up a cool vintage Ford GT plastic toy that was made in the USA probably in the early 70's for $7.

I poked around his shop and found a few goodies.

Old router bit cabinet I hope to repurpose for my OTC tool puller board.

Craftsman Crown label wrench tool pouches and drill case with drill.

One of his old trash cans with the Life magazine car ads glued on that I forgot to take a pic of.

Price was "free" LOL. We have some deals and trades coming up.

Nine, I may be able to help you get that Baldor off the ground this Wednesday LOL.

It IS a 103.08011 4x36 belt/disk sander, or one of it's variants. It would have been either Craftsman or Dunlap branded. I've seen the same model number under both labels. Yours is missing the 8" disk sander for the side, and the table/shelf for the belt (pic 3). Otherwise it is in good shape and usable.
I LOVE mine !

Set it up with a 2" pulley on both the motor and belt arbor, and run a 1725-1750 rpm 1/3hp motor on it.

Nine - I believe it is the same as yours, but looks different because the belt is set up vertical instead of horizontal.

Here are pictures of mine. I still haven't found a copy of the manual yet.

.

Awesome.. good to know.. I was thinking that at 3450rpm it was going to be frickin faaasssst!!! Thanks guy..

A few odds and ends, with the metal box being my favorite. I have no idea what to put in it, but it's just neat. Hinge was bent so it wouldn't close fully. A bit of tweaking with some channel locks and it seated correctly again.

Not bad for $6.50 at estate sales total.

Hopefully the hurricane won't soak his calcium carbide supply. :shocking:

That would be a bad thing - the Calcium Carbide must be stored in airtight, waterproof containers then? Never considered it . . .

Jim, you can use the tank as a portable air supply once you get a compressor to fill it. Just need to use some of the old fittings and maybe pick up a fitting or two, reuse the gauge etc.

I thought about keeping it and using it as an expansion tank but I don't have all that much storage at he moment. I "set it free" and someone snagged it from the curb. It's either on the way to the scrap yard or being repurposed already.

Check out the GJ Repurposing thread for the use of an old compressor tank to make a great little wood burning upright heater.

Never considered anything like that.

The good news is I was so frustrated trying to find the correct size wrench in my wrench drawer that I spent an hour or so organizing. I did the coil the wire around the broom handle thing . . . If I was gonna do it again I'd make a tapered handle to better fit the smaller wrenches.

The wider drawer has the SAE combinations on the left and Metric combinations on the right. The narrow drawer has all of my SAE DOE wrenches - I realized that I didn't have any Metric DOE wrenches.

Before this - they were all tossed in the wider drawer. Now that I have space I can keep buying more wrenches!

Cheers

Jim

Great lot for the price. Those Williams ratchets are nice. Is the selector just a screw and a pin type thing?

zkling- yes, it looks like a large slotted screw head with a little pin coming out of it.

I will take your word on them being nice, even though this one looks barely used it slips in both directions and generally feels like mush. I don't have a pin spanner small enough to take it apart either so it's going to set for a while.

So, just had a very successful Monday night pick with the misses in the heart of Philadelphia. Like, literally, 5 blocks from the Liberty Bell and Independence Mall. Responded to a CL ad for a lot of vintage tools for $275. Asked if they were willing to separate a few pieces, and she said sure. Drove down there and wow, ton of tools everywhere. $50 and 2 hours later...

Yes, that's a brass plated ash tray, lol. The misses and I were just talking about getting one of those next time we see one. But anyway...

Mint Lufkin rule, Ideal and Speedex? wire strippers, wooden handled Stanley, Winchester, and unmarked perfect handle screwdrivers. 3 plastic handled Stanley's, and a Yankee Handyman made in Philly.

Tons of Pliers. Like, I only grabbed 1/2 of them. Channelock, Craftsman, Utica, and Vacuum Grip! Even one marked Snap On too!

Full set of Xcelite nut drivers! Diamond, Pexto, and Kreauter Pliers, CMan and Billings Wrenches... and that awesome adjustable wrench!

Then....

Plumb 5449 1/2" drive rat and the oldest Superratchet that I currently own. I can not WAIT to shine those two up! Big Blackhawk Extension, 7 Armstrong, 2 Wards, and a SK Socket as well!

Definitely was worth it, and keeping in touch with her in case she needs more help moving out. It was her uncles place, who passed, and she's just getting rid of the belongings and property. Apparently he has 2 storage units to root through too ;)

All the hauls you guys have been getting lately on this thread and the nice sunny weather we've been enjoying here lately, I got that itch for garage sales... finally made time on Saturday and went out to a local estate sale in town... nothing tool related, but on the way there I spotted a yard sale! Sweet. Spotted tools and car parts from the street driving by, and I pulled a U-turn real fast. Quite a bit of 1968-72 GM A-body parts. I brought home a chain for $4 bucks and some tools for $8 bucks, for a grand total spent of $12 bucks. Not bad!
The Wizard vise-grip pliers and the Proto screwdriver caught my eye.
Got the guy's phone number for dealing on the car parts.

I apologise in advance if I have covered these before, but needs dictated that today I had to give the garage a little move around (It is STILL full of parts for the new kitchen, we hope to have that situation under control soon!)

In any case, all the moving about unearthed all these purchases that had gotten hidden before I'd even had a good look through them!

First up (pictures 1-5), a large, very well made cantilever box & it's contents I picked up at a boot sale (like a swap meet I think?) all in at £20 ($32) Can anyone decipher the name on the ratchet?

The next one (pics 6 + 7) is a rather battered cantilever box that I just couldn't refuse, I had taken a ride down to Leicestershire to pick up some drawer units and a vice, and this was offered to me for £5 ($8.25) It's got a lot of dross in it, but some of it may come in handy (the ratchet to the right of the box is un-named and broken, I will use it as a trade in with the snap on man next time I need to.)

If I can find the pics, I'll show you all the drawer units I picked up.

Open up that Herbrand ratched - they're designed amazingly well internally for strength and reliability. (Assuming it's the same as my identical billings inside) Sweet finds! :rocker:

So, our family finances are always pretty lean this time of year (before my swap meet events occur, and finally generate some capital). This year I suddenly have three more events, so the "outgo" sharply exceeds my "income" right now. That is why you haven't seen me posting here about recent tool buys. I simply decided not to buy anything until late May or early June.

Then my brother-in-law dropped in my office. Unlike many guys, I have a GREAT B.I.L. He constantly finds cool stuff for me to buy. (Thanks, Lee!)
:bowdown::bowdown:

Anyway, this time he said "You need to check Craigslist for a vise ad that I saw. It has been there 2 or 3 days." Hmmm...

The ad in question listed FIVE vises for $50, including a "Bull Dog" vise and a Wilton. The photo looked good...one medium Bull Dog (Prentiss!), plus a vise of the type used on drill presses, a smaller Littlestown, and two little red vises which I assumed were Chinese. Too good to be true....especially since the ad was not brand new. :eyecrazy: :spit:

So I called the guy. "Yes," he still had them. "Yes, the price is $50 for all five," but my price is absolutely firm." So my BIL and I hopped into my little car and drove right over there. Here is a photo of four of the five, as we found them:

I kept expecting them to be sold before I got there, or to find welds, cracks, etc, or that the brands were misrepresented, etc, etc. But I found no problems! No need to negotiate further, so I simply paid the man's wife, loaded them into my little car, and got out of there before anything could go wrong. :rocker::rocker:

The Prentiss Bulldog has 4" wide jaws, and looks like it used to be painted red. Handle not bent, jaws in great shape, no cracks or welds that I could find. :rocker:

Another vise which I was really interested in is the one which I assumed was made to be used in a drill press. I haven't found any names on it anywhere yet. Does anyone recognize it?

The jaws are 5" wide. When I turned it over, my BIL pointed out the "keys" in the bottom, and said it was designed to be used in a Bridgeport, and those keys would align in slots. This unit also swivels on the base.

The other 3 vises were not much to brag about. The Littlestown has 3" wide jaws. The other two were even smaller, and are probably Asian made.

When I got back to the office with this load, one of my guys asked if there were any small vises in the pile. He wanted one to modify for a special project at home. So I gave one to him right away. That's why these photos only show four.

I'm pretty happy with this haul, and REALLY happy with my BIL. He does this kind of thing several times a year.:rocker::bowdown::rocker:

By the way, I couldn't find any vise in this little pile with the "Wilton" brand name, but I was still willing to buy this lot. LOL.

Wow Lump, congrats. What is the number on the Littletown?

The red vise is a light duty, swivel base mill vise. The keys on the bottom were designed to help accurately located the back jaw in the mill to keep a frame of reference. They work in theory if they are installed properly. Anyway I'm not familiar with that one, but clean off the back of the fixed jaw and the front of the screw and you might see some markings. Use caution cleaning the swivel part as it should have angle markings. Looks like someone put a heavy coat of paint or two on that one.

Got this tonight. Got it all for $80. I'm very happy with all I got. The proto box is almost an exact replica of the Kennedy.

I need to start hitting the pawn shops, yard sales and estate sales in hopes of getting me some vintage tools.

SGV can be a promised land for this stuff, there was a lady in Monterey Park who was selling me junk for three weekends running. Every other garage out there is full of dirty old clamps, pullers, and unmatched sockets. Get after it!

Lump, I have a vice that looks identical to the small red clamp-on vise in the first picture. It has a paper Wilton sticker over the screw.

Nice find by the way.

It's really clean other than the dust collected on the outside. The last pic is a close up of the drawer liner. It's felt but a whole plastic type liner that fits it the drawer. It's the same in all of them.

Any ideas on the best way to remove this rust without messing up the finish of the rule?

Also, I paid 2 for $5 on the smaller clamps 2 for $10 on the medium and $10 each on the large. The seller has quite a bit. I'm thinking of getting some more, but I'm curious what you guys think on the price. Good? Fair?

CLR or Evaporust, or vinegar, that box is great!

The Littlestown vise has 3" wide jaws, and a swivel base. It is a number 900.

Nice Littletown but you really scored on that milling vise!!

Lump: i think i paid $100 for just the Prentiss vise you own and mine was in similar shape. the drill press vise looks like a Made In Japan mill vise one of my client uses on his big mill at his shop and those things are not cheap. glad you made it out of the office and if you just bought them for resale it should add to your funds for the next purchases.

Nine: that is one sweet looking Baldor set up now with BB's old stand. he picked you and you picked him so a lot of picking going on down there in LA? also nice Baldor buffer and wilton bullet. if you have the room i'm planning on mounting one of my buffers on a bench instead of the stand it's on since i'll be using it quite a bit.

good luck this weekend at the sales guys.

I got these today at a local flea, Craftsman 3/8 ratchet, looks like a Proto 5249 no number just a V.

A New Briton, looks to be a dedicated spark plug setup, and a 4" Desmond/Stephan Co vise, Simplex 35. Also this Dietz lantern, and this Coleman heater.

$40.00 for all. I'm content. The vise was made in Urbana, Ohio somewhere down the boulevard from Keven 54!!!!
