I got a few items from a pre-Estate Sale.

My wife went down to her parents place in Florida to help them move into assisted living. They had to clear 24 years of accumulation from the Florida house.

A lot of the tools have already gone to the "kid" that has been helping them clean up prior to her arrival. Despite that she did find some stuff and snagged them for me.

The coolest so far is the Long C Craftsman 6" wooden rule. I like old "measury" things.

There are some more goodies in transit but this is the best so far. . .

this is my CL find from last night. a guy had just listed a kennedy 526. I already have one, but it was listed cheap enough and he was only 20 mins away so I had to grab it. I figure I could make a couple bucks or just sit on it for awhile until a cool trade came along.
I got some other goodies from him also.

he let me look thru most of his stuff. got these guys for $10.

as I was leaving I asked if hed sell this cool old metal conversion chart. I didn't think twice when he said 5 bucks. I didn't even notice til I got home that there was no metrics on it, so it's probably pre 70s.

I find display stuff like that to be fascinating. I googled Phillips Machinery & Supply and pulled this information from the web (sadly from an obituary).

In 1961, Albert and Jean founded the Phillips Machinery & Supply Company -- to provide local industry with machines and tools to help with their manufacturing processes. Through the years the family business became the central focus of considerable energy for both family prosperity and social life. The company was born in College Park, an expression of the founder's love for the University of Maryland. Still in business 50+ years later. Well done!

A little cleaning and it's good for another 40 some years.

Those of you who read the "VISES of Garage Journal" thread, may remember this picture. I was trying to identify the vise before buying.

Well, I picked it up today and there is good news and bad news.

The original add listed the toolbox, vise, and lamp for $80. No tools. I contacted the seller through email last week and he never got back to me. Yesterday he lowered the price to $60, so I called and left a message. He called me back last night, but didn't know much about any of it. He's selling his 92yo uncles estate and is clearing things out. So I made arraignments to look at it this morning.

I get there and he tells me that he has someone else who wants to look at it this evening (yeah, right). Then he says that if I want it, I can have it now for $50. From 80 to 50. Don't you just love it when the seller does all the haggling alone while you just stand there and stare at him ?

So for a Grant (and no effort), I got -
a 1992 29" 7-drawer Kennedy #297 bottom roller.
a 4" swivel jaw Athol #644 (**see bad news below)
and a Dazor #1000 T8 (x2) lamp.

The Kennedy is in decent shape, scrapes but no dents. There were no keys, but I planed on changing the lock to match my other boxes anyway. It just needs a SEVERE degreasing and some new handles. At some time 2 of the handles broke or went missing, so the PO cut 2 others in half (poorly) to re-handle the drawers.

There was also a 1992 Kennedy catalog, Accessory catalog, and Price list included.

The Athol was a user. The jaws are worn, but not damaged. The screw is tight at the dynamic jaw, but the nut in the static jaw has a sloppy fit. So there is a little play in the movement. **Now for the bad news. Some idiot welded the swivel jaw in place. The weld goes all the way around. It will take a lot of time and effort to de-weld the vise. Otherwise, there are no other welds or cracks.

The Dazor wouldn't work when I tried it at P/U. But came right on when I tried it again at home. The off button is a little sticky though. I guess it just needed to bounce around the back of my truck for an hour to show it who's boss.

Not bad for a wednesday.

Good score, even with the weld. Those old Dazors have a starter type ON switch, you'll need to press it and hold to fire both bulbs then let off.

Jake: glad to hear you were able to pick it up and for only $50. sorry to hear about the swivel jaw welded but it does look usable. i have a Prentiss where the prior owner welded it in place too so maybe the old shop guys didn't like the fact that it would move.

that light looks even better now that you own it and happy to hear it works too. of course the money is in the Kennedy if you spiff it up or keep it so nice purchase and glad you solved the vise mystery so some of us can sleep again.

Estate Sale/Auction this week

Won two lots in this weeks estate auction.

A box of 3 hammers:

And the small sledge is a NAPA branded hammer:

I paid $13 for the box of hammers.

Also won a box of sockets and a 1/2" ratchet:

The ratchet is an almost unused Williams BS-71 - in black finish:

The sockets included a 1930's Craftsman socket and a 7/8"-12pt 1/2" drive Snap-On in black finish. The rest go in the yard sale pile.

I paid $9.01 for the ratchet and sockets.

Yeah, I thought of that, but I didn't see any other major abuse on the vise. Just normal hard wear, so it might be ok. I won't know for some time yet. I have way too many fixit's on the list before I ever get to it.

On the Kennedy, I just ordered a set of 5 handles through Kennedy online (amazon).

One good CL purchase today. As I'm always on the lookout for vintage steel cabinets I saw these last night on CL shortly after they were listed and was lucky enough to be the first response so the owner kindly gave me first dibs today. I picked them up this afternoon. $40 for both. They are 30+ years old original Pic A Nut display cabinets and came out of an auto parts store in Pontiac MI. Excellent shape with no dents or major scratches. The shelves can be easily re-arranged by removing 3 rivets per shelf. Logos are bright and undamaged. All they needed was a quick wipe down and now to find the right spot to hang them.

Yes it does and you and also zip them, and load anything (subject to the size limits)

Hi guys, I'm a little behind on posting my GS finds. So this was an interesting one and I would love some opinions.

Found a jackpot of name brand sockets at an Army/Navy store in Fort Worth. There were 3 trays full.

10 cents each.

I dug in. Here's the catch, about 60% of the sockets had manufacturer defects/blemishes. I'm guessing someone bought up an auction lot of these things for resell. How some of these even left the factory floor I have no idea! Some look perfect, some issues were minor, others looked like they had a bad press, die probs or something during the make. I said why not and ended up buying about 65 sockets, between the whole lot I might have about 6 different sizes. Keep some for repeats, some for a buddy, maybe even sell? Not sure yet. Prob want to make sure they don't fail under stress before I do anything with them.

Wright, Proto, Fleet, Action, Giller, tons of Thorsen, SK, Easco, Dayton, P&C, Pennen and my favorite for being unique one socket labeled "NASA"

Thoughts? Where did these come from?

Thanks man, ya I definitely want to see how they hold up under some torque. But on the flip side I'm wondering if I could claim warranty on any of these? (admittedly prob not the most honorable thing considering they were purchased on the cheap from a non-authorized dealer)

was the first one in the garage of an estate sale this morning, got the only thing worth buying......craftsman belt driven grinder. motor runs smooth and quiet. has a 1/2 hp motor and one of the stones is the original. I'm thinking the motor is later than the grinder. the motor has some cool "feet" on it. the parts in front of it bolt to the bench and the motor sits in them. any idea of the year?

The motor is a 50's vintage. The grinder is , I believe a late 30's one. I have the same motors and that C-man badge on the grinder matches the one on my wood lathe which is from 1938.

I stopped at the flea market today. Picked up a tap and die set, small hammer, and a punch from one stand. The guy was asking $15 for the tap and die set but I talked him into including the hammer and punch for that price.
I picked up a can opener I've been needing for work. $1

Yep, agree on the dates; late 30's possibly early 40's on the grinder. Nice find!
