I went to several yard sales today and found NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING . . .

1971 1/3 HP CRAFTSMAN BLOCKHEAD!!!!!!!!!! $10

I've been looking for one of these for more than a year now and I'm jazzed! No pictures yet because I have already torn it down and scuffed it up. (it ran before tear down) I have two coats on it now, doing a brushed aluminum look on the body and a darker gray on the bolt-on middle piece. More or less the opposite of what it came with - just to be different I guess.

Where can I find the arbor adapters? Like when you have a grinding wheel with too large diameter hub bore. The wheel that came with this was off center because the plastic adapter bushing to reduce the inside diameter of the bore dosen't get small enough.

Went to a "Moving Sale" on Friday, fellow had a bunch of tools in a five gallon bucket with a sign that read, "fill a tray for 75 cents" next to the bucket was a bunch of those rubbermaid kitchen drawer trays.

"Well" says I, "how about I just give you $5 for the whole bucket to save us some time?" He agrees and I leave him a $5 bill and tell him I"ll be back on my way back from my teaching job.

Picked up the bucket 2 hours later, he had put anything he didn't think would sell in the bucket. I drag it home and now have six Vice Grip welding clamps, four standard Vice Grip sets, six C clamps, a bunch of sockets, all name brand, a 3/8" ratchet, Snap On and a Snap on flashlight, screwdrivers, you name it, and right on top is an old National Detroit air drive sander!

Here's the story. I went to an estate sale this morning in an area I don't usually venture to (too much competition). I arrived an hour and a half before start time, and was #13 on the list to get in. Unfortunately, #4 was talking about the bullet-shaped Blackhawk toolbox visible in the ad (the reason I went to this particular sale) and he got to it before me. Later he told me that he paid $50 for it-and it was full of Blackhawk tools...
When I got into the basement with the tools, the Craftsman box above caught my eye. Then all the stuff in it caught my eye. No price on it but the kids working the basement for the sale company promised to hold it while I chased down the tool guy. Finally got him down to look at it (he seemed surprised I wanted the whole thing, contents and all...), and he thought for a minute and said, "$100" I said, "Sold!" We set it aside and I kept shopping. I picked out another $85 of stuff.
I had help loading the box into my car, but emptied it before taking it out by myself. I haven't looked closely at the box yet (so no date), but it seems square, the drawers slide smoothly, and I don't think there's any significant rust. But I'm sure you just want to look at the pictures:

Only a couple pieces from the New Britain era, the rest all pre-buyout. We have (from upper left) two obstruction wrenches, lots of DBEs-including some Hexo from the '30s (at least one is metric ), Blackhawk/Armstrong small combos and DOEs, two 1/4" drive sockets, a 1/2" drive swivel socket, several other 1/2" sockets, a 1/2" drive ratcheting adapter, 1/4" driver breaker bar and ratchet (with what must be one of the smallest ratchet heads ever), 3/8" drive ratchet, and a 7/16" drive bullet-handled ratchet. Finally there's some feeler gauges, a sender socket, and a universal.

At upper left, notice the Wright flare nut wrench set in its roll, and a set of small Utica pliers with a screwdriver in their pouch. Everything else in the picture is Diamond. That includes the "All-purpose Tool", the auto wrench, the snips, the nippers, the aviation snips, the needlenose pliers, the duckbill pliers, four different varieties of slip-joint pliers, hose clamp pliers, 4" and 8" adjustable wrenches, and a 12" chain wrench.

To wrap up this segment:

We have an old Milwaukee Sawzall in its case with lots of blades and an old Milwaukee catalog. Below that are Neway valve facer and valve seat cutters.

95% of this stuff is SK Wayne. There are 3/8" drive sockets (mostly metric and swivels), a 3/4" sliding T-handle without the bar to slide on, a 4" adjustable, some DOEs, a set of DBEs, most of a set of combos, three types of SK Wayne pliers, 1/2" drive sliding t-handle, speeder, universal, and 2 extensions. There's most of a set of 1/2" drive knurled base SK Wayne sockets, and a 1/4" drive breaker bar, spinner handle, extensions, adapters, and sockets (plus a JCPenney 1/4-3/8 adapter in the package)

We have a 3-piece Craftsman adjustable set, a Stanley (Chinese) allen socket set, a Performance Tool E-Torx set, and a set of "Lil Sharpy" sanders and files (never seen these before).

Wandered over to a garage sale down the block today and dug through a bin full of random tools. Found a few Craftsman USA items, one lonely DBE Gearwrench, and a Cornwell TR32 3/8 ratchet. Ratchet seems sound if perhaps a little gunked up inside. I'll disasemble and give it a good cleaning. $3 total

Very nice, but they didn't have the decency to include any rust?

A piece of history. The top and bottom are 1964. Must have taken a while to fill the original combo. The middle box is 1970. Side handles change from 64 to 70. Keys for the top and middle. No key for the bottom, but the locking mechanism still works. The bottom drawers are out from taking a picture of them--they are angled, not vertical. i thought it was kind of cool.

Very cool. How much was the entire setup? Any tools with it? Just an FYI, they did not change the side handles, the middle boxes (KRA-429) always had side handles without the thicker comfort portion. That top (KRA-59) was the top of the 26" boxes back then. At that weight and potential capacity one needs the extra handle thickness to prevent from cutting in. Do you have the badges? Looks like they have had some bumps along the way, but a very solid setup.

This weekend was Trade Day(boot sale for you guys across the pond ) for me, I hit a few sales Friday morning with nothing to show, then had my sale today so no garage sailing for me. I did walk the sale a few times headed to the concession and managed to score this pair pf Petersen 10r and what I assumed is some type of mortising attachment for a drill press. If anyone can solidly identify brand or model, please let me know.

Also just got off the phone with a CL seller that is meeting me tomorrow to sell me a missing link from my Heritage collection. Pics/info tomorrow on that!

Nine, it is a mortising fence and clamp. Mine is buried, but it looks a lot like the std Craftsman setup.

No tools. I think the guy I got it from had used it for 15-20 years. He wasn't sure if it was snappy or not, butte talked about and I showed him the stamping before we closed the deal. No badges
All but one drawer and the bay door on the bottom work smoothly. Yes, a few bumps but a lot of life left in it.

It's been a crazy (good) month. As promised, here we go. Sorry for all the pictures

$6 Craftsman (Kennedy) Machinist Chest, with front door and no dents. Just needs new felt, fresh paint, and 2 new plastic drawer pulls (missing).

$5 Craftsman box and $5 Proto Box. Craftsman box is a bit dent, but Proto is perfect. All original hardware, but someone wrapped the handle in electrical tape and painted the whole thing gray.


The next two pictures were $12. Many clamps, including a Proto (very beefy, very cool), a Stanley 607 bedrock plane (to go with my 608 ) a smaller Millers Falls hand plane, Starett and Union Calipers, and old USA measuring devices and bar/pipe clamps.


A free fan (needed a new cord).

$50 for the pair, craftsman top and middle boxes (great shape, need fresh paint, included keys), full of goodies. Lots of Wright sockets and drive tools (I added a handful from elsewhere) a few Plomb wrenches, a USA ratcheting wrenches, old and with Pat#s but no maker stamped onto them, a nearly full set of Barcalo Buffalo DBE offset wrenches and Wright combination wrenches, USA (Craftsman, Vlchek, Proto, Plomb) punches and chisels, and a bunch of older USA hand tools on the top.







$15. A full set of Williams offset DBEs, some Williams/Snap On/Billings tappet wrenches, a Snap On Ferret F70S (perfect shape, internals were clean and well-lubricated), Williams speeder, Vaco wire stripper, 2 Craftsman screwdrivers, Crescent needlenose pliers.

$1 Dayton bench grinder (will use as a buffer/polisher), need to buy a left-hand nut on Monday, and am missing one of the original washers, most else is there.



This last one is where it gets crazy. Craigslist ad said that everything in the garage was for sale, but that you had to send a message for an appt. I saw a few things I was interested, and gave it a go. First to email, first to arrive. After picking through the lot for a few handfuls ($30), the owner said: "you know what, I just want everything out of here...if you move it all out, you can take the rest of the garage for $200." Done. Mostly Proto, Snap On, SK, Craftsman, and Wright hand tools, a Kennedy Versa Cart, a 1979 Snap On KRA-380, and much much more not pictured. 99.9% of what is pictured is USA-made.

That's awesome. Even if I managed to find one, I would have a hard time keeping it though if they're worth that much.

On another note, Thursday I hit my first four garage sales of the summer but nothing to show for it yet.

Local bootsale/flea market had an assortment of the usual junky cheap sheet spanners, but found some jewels in the dross for a buck or less a piece.
First up, a small selection of nondescripts that took my fancy, mostly for my bike toolkit, where I'd not be bothered if they got lost or broken/stolen.
Note the bottom one of the four is identical to the Heyco spanners.

Followed by a part-set of Heyco open-ended spanners, stamped BMW on the obverse, so I assume they came with various MistWagens over the years. The seller had several part-sets, and I managed to get the last of the smaller spanners.

And last but not least, reserved a Record #23 machinest/fitter's quick-release vice (note the lack of anvil) - still a current model, this one (not the one in the pic, that pic is just one off the net) is in very good condition and has been very well cared for. Cost; about a third of what a new one sells for, so I'm happy enough.
I'll collect it next month, when my tool budget allows; meanwhile the seller has agreed to keep it aside for me.

The parts for the mortise chisel and drills. see R, S, & T below. "R" is the only piece I'm still missing. In the ideal world, I actually want the smaller version for an 80 I've got, and that would become a dedicated mortising drill

saw a few other good scores but there were so many pages of GGoss that i forgot who and what so congrats on them.

I picked up another workbench for $80 that should work out better than the one I had and even though it's not a Gladiator and was a Costco import. the top is flat and clean and almost an exact copy of the gladiator one i had a few years ago. the Costco ones have made in China stamped on the metal and small little phillips screws instead of a little better quality metal and lag bolts holding the top on the frame. it's 8 foot by 2 foot and should be nice to put a couple old rolling tool boxes under it.

Wow, just wow. Your garage must be packed. Have fun sorting through. The craftsman middle, Kennedy and snap on bottom are awesome. Not to mention all the good tools.

Here is my newest King Seeley acquisition, purchased from a 84yo one owner cl listing. I saw an $85 ad for the saw/joiner combo and it said email/call/text so I text asking about accessories and offer $60. Later on I get a reply accepting the offer and mentioning accessories. We set up a time for this morning to pick it up, I couldn't sleep...Get over there this morning and it's an 84 year old man that was the original purchaser of this machine. He showed me all the shop cabinets he built with it and had some good stories. It came with a pile of blades, one a NOS that probably came with the machine, the original miter gauge, fence, both extensions, adjustable ball bearing style roller and wooden sled he made for larger pieces of work. He upgraded the original 1/2hp motor with a newer Craftsman 1hp at some point he said so it has a newer/larger motor on it.

Then after I load it up, I ask about any other tools he may have for sale and he says his son and SIL took everything they could use so I ask about the vise mounted on the bench, he says make an offer, $20 later I am complete!! The elusive 4" has finally shown up for me!

Now I just need to pretty them all up, 3.5", 4", 5"

Not a stellar weekend especially compared to some posts I'm seeing but the hunt for a deal is still fun.
1st sale was by chance on the way home from work Friday and they were pretty cleaned out. A 25 cent picture frame and a free hose clamp.
2nd sale was a chance stop on Saturday while driving to a local pickers place and not much in tools except a couple small c clamps, one bent and one straight but marked made in USA and, a small TV for the garage (Not pictured).
3rd sale was at the pickers place and netted a pair of Model A vintage tool kit pliers, an exelite 1/4" nut driver and a real cow bell that will not be used on a cow but rather when cleaned up on my drum set. It had a really nice tone. Also two small tool boxes which I'll clean up and use for parts storage/organization. The red pent roof one looks farmer home made and is pretty rough but will be serviceable once repaired.
Last deal of the day was a free by the roadside pick up of a satellite dish and mount. I've always wanted to re-purpose one of these things and keep reading various creative ways to use them so I had to stop and toss it in the truck.

Wow, the suckage is strong this weekend. So many of you making great scores. GGoss, it's a good thing you apologized in advance for making us wade through all of those pictures. Serioulsy though, you absolutely killed it!

Here's my modest contribution after an impromtu stop at this morning's swap meet. First stop I picked up a box load of odds and ends; a can of linseed oil, a couple of handfuls of c-clamps by Brink & Cotton and Adjustable with a little Cincy Tool clamp thrown in, 24” Ridgid pipe wrench, Vaughan BPH, unmarked soft-faced hammer, 2 Petersen vise grips, oilers by Plews and Craftsman, a Craftsman drill box and an old school 28” Craftsman level. Paid a total of $21.25 for the lot. Second and last stop picked up a pair of Schiller Park marked Wilton 404 c-clamps for $5.

Looks identical to a S-O hammer I have, of the late 70s. The soft heads on mine are light blue and dark blue - I reckon they were colour-coded for hardness. Each head unscrews.

After my lucky purchase yesterday (posted here in case you missed it in all the madness) I thought that my luck had run out this weekend. For the most part I was right. The nearest flea market to me opened today for the season. I got there at 7:45a thinking that only a few dealers would show up this early in the season, only to find 300+ tables and NO PARKING spaces. This place was packed solid. So, I parked on the street (a state road that TOWs) and rushed my way through the market hoping I would only get a ticket and not get stranded.

I'm sure I missed some good stuff in my haste. I only found one thing on my list, but the good news is that I didn't get towed and didn't have to pay a ticket (the state cop directing the tow trucks hadn't made it as far as my truck yet, but I did get a dirty look).

I walked out with a 1947 Cman 1750rpm 1/2hp motor (#115.6962) for $15 (he wanted 25). Those things are heavy when you have to walk 1/2 mile in a hurry to get back to your truck. The motor needs a new cord and the bearings are stiff and make noise, but it runs and the crunching sound went away after I blew out all the sawdust.

This one will get arbor adapters and become a wire wheel station after the bearings and cord get fixed.
