I posted this in "Garage Sale Goodies" thread, but I'll add it here, seems relevant.

Not BETTER garage sales, but MORE garage sales.
I have gotten some pretty good stuff at garage sales.
Just 3 days ago I got an English-made, pre-Irwin, no.3 Record vise (or vice as the Brits call it).
Anywho, it's new and it was $25.
But I had to go to half a dozen crappy garage sales first.
Some examples of crappy garage sales:

1) me: "your Craigslist ad stated you have tools for sale"
Idiot: "um yeah, I shouldn't have said tools, there aren't any, hey, need some baby clothes or a toaster?"

2) me: "your Craigslist ad stated you have tools for sale"
Different garage sale idiot: "yup, they're right there", points to a shoebox full of used doorknobs and RCA patch cords.

3) drive 6 miles to garage sale, ad says "tons of hand tools"
No garage sale, nothing in driveway, no one home.

4) me: "how much for the effed-up, bent, rusty, worn-out, seized, pitted, hammered-on, detent-ball-missing Snap-on ratchet that has brown water coming out of it when you turn it upside down because it has spent more time outside than the statue of liberty?"
Cranky old man: "well my son checked eBay and those go for over $100, so I'll say $75 firm"

Bottom line: You gotta kiss a lot of frogs to get the good stuff.

I spend a lot of time looking at and weeding out garage sale ads. It's gotten to where I can predict what a sale will look like just from the ad. On any given summer weekend I might whittle dozens of ads down to 5 or 6 stops. Targets of opportunity are limited to sales that a) look good from the road, b) are in older neighborhoods or rural areas. Just saying "Tools" in the ad isn't enough to get the sale on my list. I'm not sure what my exact criteria are, but it has to do with the other things listed, the tone of the ad, and the neighborhood. I (like most other people, I assume) simply don't have time to stop at sales stocked with nothing but baby clothes and pressboard entertainment centers.

DIF that old one is a Plvmb/Proto (probably the former). Not sure who they made them for, but that style is what I've come to think of as the Wright Field (WF) type. I have a couple and one is unmarked.

Question: does yours have the inset on the handle on both sides? I have one that only has it on one side, and IIR it was the unbranded one.

here's pictures of both sides of what you and i think is a Proto and maybe a Plumb ratchet. your call since you've seen more ratchets than most or anybody else have an answer? it looks like maybe my name was ground off on purpose and owner's ID punched into the handle?

On garage sale signs, I look for "old people writing". Big cute bubbly writing screams "baby clothes".

It is a WF Plvmb for sure. I have seen then marked and unmarked before. Mine is a one up one down plumb bob version which makes it more valuable. I bought it of e bay super cheap and it is my favorite ratchet to date!

Posted this in the wrong section the other day....

Did pretty well today. I got all of the sockets, ammo can, and four USA wrenches for $20, the new roll of duct tape, electrical tape, and thread tape for $1, the KRA-282 old Snap On case in excellent shape for $10, and the Central dial Caliper for a whopping $1!! That thing sells for $60 online. The sockets are half V craftsmen, some Eastco, KAL, one MAC, one Proto, and the rest Taiwan and Japan. The wrenches are KAL, SK, Blue Line, and Thorsen.
Also found a brand new ten pack of Brita water filters for $1, and scored four pair of Converse for $25. Not bad at all today.

thanks Smokeshow. it is going in the keeper box and we'll see how she works when called on. I've been using Craftsman all my life and never had a proto or SK or some of the german made ones i'm finding now. i do have a 3/8 inch snap on that is in my everyday box I've used for about 10 years and love the feel of it. there is a difference in the action.

of course Craftsman in my experience was dependable and i only broke one 1/2 inch ratchet which isn't all bad since i didn't have a breaker bar and used mine for everything.

more stuff from the weekend. a few cool and a few needed and some just threw in the bucket to decide later if either of the above.

Hey drives that is one fine looking Kraeuter ratchet. I'm always amazed at the quality of tool steel from the PNW. I've never found one in the wild around here.

i think i did so good i dont want to part ways. bought to resell, but i dont know now. handy little boxes. i will be seperating them from the frame.

kennedy. they are friction slides unfortuneately but the smoothest ive felt to be honest. they are full of crud, and not greasy crud. the slides are dry. cleaned and lubed i think they will make due. big one is 30 w 21 d small one is 21 w 21 d
they are bolted to a nice homeade frame. 2 big heavy tires in center. swivel caster on each end in a + pattern basically. guy was an airplane mechanic and brought it home with him and has moved onto a better box. id put them as 80's models, but im no kennedy expert. screwdrivers, some other hand tools, some nice stainless steel one hole straps that i will use for a later project. sandpaper, some discs for grinder and and some discs for air grinder. in one of the drawers was an old snap on ratchet. makes the deal even sweeter.
$140 i think i did decent.

Bobcat:did you get that cool ratchet from your dad or uncle? ok it's a you **** deal and do tell the story.

i'm done taking pictures today and still have a few boxes to unload. here is the last ones for today and a couple interesting items I've not seen before. any clues to the German made wrench with screwdriver end on it. the tape measure by Craftsman with the readout on top including the width of the holder is sorta cool.

Drives, if the Plvmb was ground off it could be a lawsuit ratchet. After Plvmb lost, against Plumb, they had to grind a lot of already made tools to avoid more fines.

And wow, scores everywhere from you!

I don't think that is a homemade cart. It looks like one of their iconic versa-carts.

Really a forging hammer, that has evolved into a few other markets.

I don't think that's a homemade cart. I believe it's a version of the Kennedy Versa-Cart. You did good at $140.

EDIT - zkling's fingers were faster.

The ratchet was from an older gentleman who visits the pawn shop I work for. He knows I collect tools and came in with it and handed it to me. I thanked him and he said he has a few more but isn't sure if he wants to part with those.

Love the PC cabinet, as well. Protect your (valuable and sensitive) PC from the effects of the plant environment.

I've got my MacPro sitting on the fold-up shelf on the side of my Sears Craftsman/Waterloo box from the 1980's.

Thanks Jeff and Outlaw for the kudos.

here are a few close ups of the German made multy tool that has a 14 mm wrench on one end and a screwdriver on the other and doesn't appear to be welded so probably made this way. Mc Culloch is the name on the other side.

the little Plvmb double ended wrench is pretty cool and is this cast?

close up of a few other mystery tools because i had room for more pictures on the post.

The Mc Culloch wrench/screwdriver is likely a factory tool that came with a chainsaw. The box end for removing the spark plug and the screwdriver end for adjusting the chain or having to take the saw apart out in the field.

An older version of this:

Thanks for the info. You're right the ball peen hammer is steel, no markings on it though. Do you know what they were used for?

The tap handle is a Miller Falls I can't read the rest. I've seen bigger tap handles just not T handle.(I should have clarified)

I wasn't sure what that forging hammer was I knew it looked similar to the hammers I see the masons at work using.:lol_hitti

That is an OEM Craftsman stand, they were not marked other than cast part numbers. Good find!

Awesome. I thought it looked like the Craftsman one. I just assumed that anything Craftsman would have a logo. Thank you.

What are my odds of finding the correct quenching tray? Anyone have a pic of just the tray.
