I like the Stahwille and the Snap-on Boxes. I haven't seen them around here yet.

First tools, then toys.

First stop I found the $5 box of mystery. It yielded about a 50/50 mix of good and China. The stuff on the left is mostly US made. There's a strange flask sitting on the lip of the box that was oozing very viscus oil of some kind. Any ideas? I first thought it might be from a gun kit like you might get with a Nagant.:dunno:
I saw the remains of a Cman bottom box missing 2 drawers and its casters for $3 at the same sale. I thought about it and did a turn around and grabbed it. It occurred to me that all of the tiny (and many) organizers full of screws & nuts will consolidate into one big one. And the missing drawers leave space for tall containers.
At another sale I got the jacks for $5. Can't make out the manufacturer of the shorty, but it works!
That's about it for tools this week.

Flea market finds from Sunday-

-4 ton bottle jack for when I jack up my garage hopefully this summer don't worry I'll take lots of pics.
-Forging tongs? (I think they're called that)
-Starrett 19 1/2 inch rule
-25 craftsman sockets
-2 new socket rails 1/4 and 3/8
-1 craftsman wrench
-craftsman sander with box and a big stack of sanding discs I bought it just for the box and discs but the sander works so i'm going to put a new cord on it and put it to work.
-not pictured but I got my son a jar of old marbles and my daughter a miniature tea set.
All for $20
Plus i'm becoming a regular so the guy is going to check his storage trailers for vises and toolboxes.:D

Nice sander and that original box is awesome. Nice score

Hey Nine, those cleaned up beautifully!

Jake, nice score on the sander and box. I passed on a router in a similar box this past weekend and have been kicking myself ever since.

There was a late in the day estate sale I stopped by. The radio was not intended as part of the sale, but I asked. The lady asked "How about $5.00"? Sold! New batteries and adapter included. Grundig S350 shortwave receiver. My latest favorite radio.
I spotted the scale at the same sale I got the jacks at. It's huge. My first thought from a distance was that it was a 60's or 70's tacky home decoration. Not so. Its well machined, hardened pivots, and heavy brass throughout. There's a lead and brass seal on it that's hard to make out. I got JV Tilsyn out of it and it's a Scandinavian name. I found another part marked Praecision. European for sure. I found that they made medical scales a century ago. Nothing quite like this. It stands 31" tall. Each tray is about 11.5". Even with such a narrow base it stand by itself because the trays are so low hung. Not sure its intended purpose. Anyone come across something like this?
Just to prove I don't just shop for myself, a home spun Hobby Horse for the kids. A couple wanted $5 for it. Their grandfather built it for his kids. Each moving part has a bearing pressed in. Made in America, built to last!

SOH, that's an apothecary scale. At one time there would have been a set of weights to go with it. The Apothecary or pharmacist as we now know them would use them to measure out ingredients for formulations or medicines for dispensing.

Can you take an up close pic? It does look like a cleaning kit bottle. Are there any markings?

Itinerant, I think you're on the money about the scale now that I have something more to google by. All I can think now when I look at it is "What a big pill to swallow".

Can you take an up close pic? It does look like a cleaning kit bottle. Are there any markings?

There is. An arrow inside of a triangle. The gunk inside is a little like gear oil, only no odor. More like cold honey, not that I'm putting it to a taste test.

Very cool. Me thinks grandpa' was a machinist at one point in time. :lol_hitti

Grandpa took pride in his work for sure!

Giggity! Simply a thing of beauty. Those results with only a wire wheel, and a quick wipe down of oil? Sheesh ... I want your grinder. I really like how the knurling on those extensions mimic the sockets. How's the ratchet?

I got an email from my local FreeCycle group listing, among other things, a Craftsman Toolbox, with no further description. It was right in my town, so I shot the guy an email to claim it. He said, "Come on by, it's on the side of the house."

I wasn't expecting much. I was tickled to see it was a cantilevered box. I've been wanting one for a while. It's a little beat up on top, with a big dent in the back, but otherwise in pretty good shape. I'll hammer out the dent and get it to close up better (so it won't need the duct tape).

The price was right: FREE.

That flask is from a Russian gun cleaning kit. Mosin Nagant flasks had 2 compartments and 2 lids. Yours may be from an SKS or an AK. The Arrow in a triangle means it was made at the Izhevsk arsenal.

I went to an estate sale on Monday, It was very picked over by then. I found a couple of tools, but nothing to write home about. As I was leaving I asked the guy running the sale, Where was all the tools that he had advertised? He asked if I had looked through the box behind the shed? There was a pile of empty boxes piled around a metal lawn building that I had looked inside of. So I looked behind it and there was a job box back there, I opened the lid and started picking tools out that I wanted, Then he came by and asked if I had found any thing that I wanted? I asked him how much for the box and all. He said he was flying out back south on Wed. and had to get rid of every thing before he left. He asked for 75.00, I told him I was in the 50.00 range, He said he couldn't do that, but 60.00 would work. I paid the man, and we loaded it in the back of my truck.

Well I didn't buy this at a garage sale, but I figured an antiques show was close enough. It's a Craftsman cantilevered tool box from the 1980s, I believe. Asking price was $45 and I got it for $35, so I was happy with that. After a quick look, they go for $40 on up online. Of course, it's not as good as Free that I just noticed from a few posts above this one... It's 18" long and in good shape. I'm excited to have it and add it to the collection.

Thanks for my first "you ****"! I found the rule sitting on a shelf with some dishes. When I saw it was a starrett I had to have it.

Check out how much the Greenlee punch goes for online. That is a U-**** right there. And the Knaack was a steal. $200+ rotted out with rust around here.

Thanks! I kind of figured it was from some sort of Russian kit. Don't know what was stored in it. But I wouldn't use it on a firearm.

I've got one of those two headed monsters around here. So M-N would be WWII right?

It likely contained oil. My 2 compartment Mosin flask had molasses like sludge in the oil side. These oil flasks have probably been in storage for decades and the oil was probably the cheapest **** around to begin with and did not age well!

Most likely WW2 but they have been around since 1891 and were still seeing plenty of use in Vietnam. Hell, they are still being used today. There were tens of millions made by Russia and millions more made by China. If there is/was a war since 1891, chances are somebody used a Mosin Nagant in the fighting.

Traditionally one side should have been oil and the other a alkaline cleaning solution. With the ammo being so corrosive, something strong to neutralize it was needed. There are even reports of soliders peeing down the barrel to prevent corrosion. The rearseneled ones were usually dumped and pack with cosmoline like the rest of the rifle.

As long as its not poop in the shape of a celebrity, go for it.

No poop or celebrities, how about a Vornado, table fan stool for cool? The fan can be rotated to face out or up to distribute air around. Also got a cool 12" Craftsman chain wrench and some Proto goodness all for a $20 spot.

It will be restored and kept. I saw one on ebay years ago and have been waiting to find one I could afford, this is it. Going in the new house probably, instead of the garage.

Free! Garbage pick this morning on the way to work.
IMG_8102.JPG

$6 DOE Bonney set, 17x19, 21x24, 25x27, 30x32. Any idea what constitutes a set of these?
IMG_8103.JPG

$10, Easco 18 and 20 mm, KAL USA obstruction, Cornwell set of swivel sockets and the bottom is 1xProto and 3xCornwell 5/8" sockets (was in a rush, should have looked at them closer). I actually seem to have a habit of getting a whole bunch of the same size cornwell sockets.

Good finds, I'm glad to hear Rickster is still around he hasn't posted in a while.

Which flea? Greenmead is coming up, but I don't normally find tools there.
