Found a solid maple hotel key holder for $5 at sale today. Went late to a barn sale and scored a bunch of old socket set holders at twenty-five cents each. SK, Wizard, Cman. I have heaps of sockets, now I have the boxes to make the sets. Near new stapler for $5 and the corner Cman sander for $2. The sale I got the boxes at was in a huge barn full of eons of ****. I just missed out on two New Britain store tool holding displays by about 15 min. Wish I hit that sale earlier. But if wishes were horses, we'd all be eating wish meat.

Not sure if this is any big deal but I really thought it was cool with the logo so sharp. I think its a little cleaner and the lettering pops better in person, but I needed the flash.

The first garage sale of the day was out on a farm about 15 miles away. I was first to show. And I'm proud of this. I never get there first.
I was talking to the two ladies running the show and this guy pulls in. One of them tells me there are tools around the corner and he shoves past and beelines right to the boxes. He was kind of aggressive and demanding. So while he haggles and hmms and haws, pacing around, I pay the forty dollars, load them up, and go on my merry way.
These are heavy empty. They were full of big steel rods, wrenches (one Plomb pebble), mystery tools, and metal mystery parts to boot. All sorts of stuff, much of it scrap. Most of the junk is in the boxes around the bottom of the photo. The top box is a Black Hawk manufactured for Caterpillar as a Serviceman's Toolkit. It still has the cork liners in the drawers. The bottom is a Cornwell 6146.
One of the small drawers seemed like it was for personal stuff. A pair of trifocals, dog tag on its chain (my daughter has misplaced), and most important, the key! Not sure why but there is a hidden compartment under the lowest of the small drawers.

Tried out four different sales today but only two netted anything of interest. And the one that was expected to be the best turned out the worst. Advertised as having lots of tools but mostly old abused power tools that were priced too high. One old ratty no name tool box with a few abused sockets and a Craftsman ratchet priced at $30. I would have maybe paid $5 but there was no chance.
Sale group #1.
A nice pair of steel tube end caps to make a wood pile, and a couple brand new cement foundations for a shed project I have in mind. $10.

A couple old style vases that my daughter wants, a nice Acorn Products metal file box, 7 paper filter masks, Craftsman 30' 1" wide tape measure, a Stanley 100' tape, a Williams "S" curve open end wrench with the "Mack" logo, a pair of Blue Bird 12 3/4" shears and, a no name (but solid) pair of lineman's pliers. $5

Nice scores DT man! I think that stapler is the heavy duty model and can take longer staples for thicker stack of paper. I'm pretty sire those were in production from late 40's to a least the 70's, if not later.

Outlaw that's a good haul, I really like the old saw.

I had one planned stop today, a sale that was cancelled last week. I’ve been looking for a small machinist’s chest for my basement bench and holding out for something in decent shape and not a lot of money. I got this Kennedy 620B and contents for $15. It’s in good shape, but in need of a good cleaning. There were a handful of Stanley chisels, some screwdrivers, a 3” Brink & Cotton clamp, three Ulmia wood turning tools and the other stuff in the photo inside.

The second stop was impromptu and yielded a few pieces by S-K, Mac, Proto and Craftsman as well as the handy file and the Disston mill ******* file. These items were .50-.75 each. The Craftsman wood chisel has the long C underline logo.

Ths Craftsman chisel should br from the mid 30's to mid 40's or so. Cool Find!

Bill that logo was generally used as I just told Itinerant, from the mid 30's-mid 40's; however, it does occasionally crop up later that that, sometimes much later. The saw itself looks more 60's or so to me, and its condition in any case is great. Does it say it's for metal cutting? Once in a while I see a saw like that and its for metal cutting like a hack saw. Usually it's much older/beat looking...

How do these stack up agianst the older similar Wiss snips? This is the first pair of pro's I've seen. Seems decent enough and after adjusting the tension on the blades even better, but I haven't tried them as yet. I'll have to compare the two on the next SM project...

I got these SK sockets off ebay for $2.25 plus shipping.

Shortest extension I've seen!!

This Ford wrench was from Yesterday, $2 going into my shadow box ford wrench collection.

Then this is my first stop at the trade day today, $11.

A union 2" caliper, a Starrett rotation counter, a cool fishing lure and a cable clamp.

Then the second stop was these circle H Craftsman sockets extensions and ratchet. everything to the right of the file is craftsman circle H, and to the left is =V= craftsman on the lower and peencrafts sockets. I got all of these in a old tray for a toolbox for $5

For the interesting part I found the speed bar for the 1/2" sockets that I had in the tray. I had already paid for them and I thought hell I should get it to keep it with the set. I asked the guy how much and the lady came up going, "That's not for sell!" I'm like why not? She said it's antique! I'm standing there looking at her like,.

I said ok, what would you want for it? She said how much would you give, I said $5? She said not for sell. So I'm still scratching my head and go "You realized you just sold me everything that went with it for $5 and so now you want to break the set up?" She was now the one going,

So I just walked off going" I'll see you next weekend",

I picked up this Thorsen 3/4" drive set at the swap meet this morning for $25. The sockets are 1 1/8"-2" and the short extension is S-K.

Picked up this 24" Plvmb transitional pipe wrench and P&C 12 " adjustable wrench. Also got these Proto sockets and screw drivers for $40 for all.

Fisher Anvil. 108 lbs. No "you *****" here. It was 3 Benjamins but it's really nice with excellent rebound.

Dave:nice finds again today. you seem to know where the quality items are and better yet how to bring them back home. the anvil looks to be a good one and i'd love to see it mounted on a stump if you plan to keep it and use it.

the Reed vise is pretty interesting. I've seen many names on that style vise, but yours is the first one I've seen with Reed on it. they made great vises and not surprised you thought it was pretty heavy for its size. i'd triple your investment on that one and pick it up on my way to the coast if you don't have a spot for it. put the profit towards the anvil funding.

RJ: what the guys are trying to say is we are happy to have you as a new member and hope you stick around to learn and teach us what you know. also i'm not sure you are able to post an ad in the classifieds as a new member, but that is really where your box should go and wishing you the best in finding another new home for it. you might have to have 100 posts as a member before you can use the classifieds or wanted so we don't become Craigslist #2.

I've never seen that logo myself. It looks like my Cman Commercial only with a cool and not plastic logo. Very nice!

Flea market this morning, $1 for the sawzall metal case.

Back to the sale I hit earlier in the week (I was hoping for another one of those lyon cabs), got these for $10. Three 1/4" Cornwell ratchets, one proto ratchet, two ratcheting snap-on wrenches, a short snap-on combination, two snap-on punches, and a set of proto punches.

Also bought a Lyon work bench that I had to go back to and pick up for $20.

When I went back to pick up the work bench, I ran into the guy. He opened his tool box and found a couple of other things, ended up spending another $120 on the wrenches (6-19 short combination) and snips (Wiss), and $20 for the flex head snap-on ratchet.

I asked the guy when I was loading up the bench if that Wilton vise he had in the garage was on it, he said yes and that he sold it yesterday for $70 to some other guy that spent $500+ there and cleaned him out. One of these I wish moments, but I couldn't go anywhere yesterday.

Dave: what does the Reed weigh? - Nice scores!

I went back put to the place I got the Rohm Drill chuck from: it turns out the top retaining ring is missing... So I took a chance to see if it was laying loose in a box. No dice. Showed the guy what I was looking for and left contact info in case it turns up, as he is cleaning out both his farther's place and his own place, and even helped me look oin the "not for sale" area in case it was there...

Maybe I'll get lucky, but in the mean time the search for a part is on. this is too nice a chuck to abandon. new its north of $120 so worth the effort...

While I was digging I found a couple more bit's at his place;

6 compartment small plastic box, an hex driver to 3/8 drive adapter, and a couple of GreenLee conduit punches. Spares, but too good a deal to leave behind...

And a pic of the chuck again; the exposed end is supposed to have a knurled ring, and threads inside the top shell. It is a 1/8 to 5/8 Rohm Supra, in case anyone knows of a decent source. so far Google has not got me there...

heres my weekend score. found on CL wed. checked it out thurs. brought it home sat morning. it wasn't in a garage it was in an airplane hanger! we had to push out the guys plane to get it out.
I've been looking for another lathe for about 2 years since I sold mine(like a dummy) but could never find one in my price range or close enough.
I thought it was a bargan, but an older friend of mine that knows more about these things said it was an OK deal at 700 clams.
I first thought it was early/mid 40s but now i'm thinking its late 30s
yeah, the rollback may have been overkill, but that's how I do things

Some Sunday swap meet finds.

Little 3-1/2" Reed Swivel Vise $12. (this vise seems to have the highest weight to size ratio of any other vise I've seen)

Dave- they are stout little vises, no? I picked this #23-1/2 a while back. All I have is a bathroom scale and it doesn't like to weigh small amounts. I would guess 20 lbs or so.

Surprisingly I have a little Craftsman #506-51801 that also has 3.5" jaws and it weighs a little more than the Reed, despite the Craftsman having a stamped steel slide, which makes it front heavy. It was made by Columbian. It is the red vise on the left.

Beatcad:Nice haul and did you also get a box full of parts with that too? i'm guessing late 30's but there is a Craftsman expert lurking that might be able to pin down the exact year for you. i'm happy you didn't snap the cast with all those chains pulling on it and you did ok on the price if it works and especially if you picked up some extra tooling for it.

Sack:awesome tool boxes and what did those old boys put in the secret drawer? by the way have you opened your barrel of grease yet? i'm betting it looks like the grease on Beat's lathe. it is sort of like butter in a brown yellow black way and the old boy's put it on everything and not just a little bit. that's why they bought it in 50 gallon drums.

Shadow:that $20 Lyon table was a steal and will look awesome with a little light sanding and clean up. and to pick up those other gems on the return trip was good way to spend a Benjamin and a couple of his friends.

yes I was careful w/ the chains.
it was stored indoors for 10 or more years. it's not rusty; its gloppy w/ grease.
its in my garage now. it's tight not sloppy(worn out) when I get it cleaned up a bit and start tossing chips i'll show some pix.
