Part IV the finale!

Pic 1: Ken Tool truck tire spreader, pry bars, Trimont pipe wrench, 2" receiver hitch material, Diamond "Ford" wrenches.

Pic 2: Cool small metal desk.

Pic 3: 3 Boat propellers in usable shape, Boy Scouts flashlight, glass blocks.

Pic 4: Various pliers and other tools maybe for vinyl siding? Wire brushes, C-clamps, thermometers, dent pullers, oil can and meter.

Not pictured: Scuba tank and mask (scuba instructor friend is certifying the tank and rebuilding the mask in exchange for me filling his missing Craftsman sockets and wrenches, will be worth $200 plus after that)

33 cans of Campbell's Soup and other vegetables, at 25 cents a can I couldn't pass it up and may be eating it until I sell enough of this stuff LOL. All dates were good)

I spent $159 the first day and $100 the second day. I spent several hours there both days. The wasps were thick and there were mud dauber nests on everything. There were even live wasps hiding on one of the safety signs and they started flying around the inside of the Excursion while I was driving!

Oh and I still have to post my finds from the other sales!

Just how rare? Cause I came across one just like his and another sized wrench. I noticed it was only made in 1 year but never seen one being sold.

Read the details of the lawsuit in AA. probably only made one year or less, and many may have had the "Plvmb" ground off. Certainly many with just "Plvmb" on them were ground off....

H.K. Porter bolt cutters

Had to pay tax. So 16 and change. I would pay that for the H.K. Porter cutters.

Well, here is a late post of my finds from last week. First up is a Grizzly horizontal bandsaw that I picked up from Craigslist. It's a little rough around the edges but it works as it sits, so I plan on using it for a while before I do anything cosmetic like paint or polish. I was totally fed up with all of the dust that my abrasive cut-off saw made since I mostly work inside at night. I do plan on modifying the movable jaw of the vise so that I can hold short pieces.

photo1_zps68f26fb7.jpg

This actually ended up being an interesting stop. I was texting back and forth with the seller and he told me just to come out back and "they" would be out there. While cautious, I wasn't overly worried about the stop since I talked to the guy on the phone for a bit and he didn't seem too sketchy. When I got there and entered the yard down the pathway next to the shed, I was greeted by a father and son named Al and Bill, respectively.

They were tool guys like us, and friendly ones at that. They were more than happy to show me around the property. What initially caught my eye was a humongous grinder mounted on a pedestal right out in the yard with a nice brick paver area in front of it. They also had a large vise and anvil to each side of the grinder. Everything (minus the anvil, that was under a tarp) had a heavy coating of industrial gray paint on it and was in surprisingly good condition. They also had a shed stocked to the brim with all sorts of tools. We shot the **** for a while outside and eventually they asked if I wanted to see the "real" shop. Uhhhh…yeah of course.

Off to the basement we go and they take me to this..

AL_BILL_SHOP_zpsf5869a21.jpg

It was a full on working shop. This was just the main room. There was every woodworking tool you would need and it was all set up. If you look carefully you can see the PVC for the dust collector and the copper pipes for the overhead air lines. There was also a beast of an antique bandsaw in the far corner. All fully working and well used. Turns out that Al is a retired cabinet maker that now does some antique restorations and projects for his own house. He showed me some of his cabinet work and the craftsmanship was impecable.

The price for the bandsaw was $75 and I gladly paid it since they had it all set up and and ran it for me without me having to even ask. Good people, Al and Bill. I can see myself dealing with them again in the future.

Next was a random Goodwill find. Paid $25 for almost the same Steelmaster cabinet as alinc (minus the safe).

photo2_zps81d96ba8.jpg

Next stop was at the local FM. Picked up the BOG socket for $1 from one seller. After getting it home it kinda looks like someone put it on a wire wheel. Oh well.

photo1_zps17e536bf.jpg

Picked up the charger for my e-tank setup for $12 from another seller that I like.

photo4_zps3108be1f.jpg

Got the misc handful from the same seller for $1. Snappy speedometer cable lubricator, SK 3/8-1/4 adapter, Fuller metric DOE, Barcalo offset DBE, deep impact socket & a few hunks of misc hardened(?) steel.

photo2_zpseed21285.jpg

From another seller I picked up this Williams box with an SK socket wrench inside. Some of the sockets were Williams with some other misc USA filling the other spots. The SK rat works, but the detent is worn flat so sockets fall off. A rebuild kit is already on the way. Paid $12 for the box and contents.

photo4_zps4ba90035.jpg

The next bunch was picked up from a TOO on the way to dinner with the future in-laws. We drove by a friend of ours' house who does junk removal on the side, and I spotted what looked like some metal table legs in the back of his pick-up. I sent a text to him and told him I'd come by after dinner. The table ended up to be this small desk. The top looked wood at first but it's actually thin sheet metal with some sort of fibre board on top. The rotten top has already been discarded. Hopefully I can find a nice piece of butchers block for it and it will become the stand for my mini lathe.

photo3_zpsbfee6957.jpg

While I was there I figured I would ask hime if he has any hand tools around that he wanted to sell. He went into the garage as I loaded up the small desk and he came out with this toolbox:

photo4_zps4dcc51b0.jpg

And inside I found this (minus the HF stuff, that was in a different box):

photo2_zps716bceec.jpg

photo4_zps2040df49.jpg

photo_zpsc7576958.jpg

photo3_zps3ad93f1a.jpg

There was a nice little assortment inside. The majority of the pliers have already been cleaned up and put into rotation. The long nose vise grips that rusted open are now working great after a bath in EOR. Today I swapped out the indicator stand for another one at HF since the threads on the base were all stripped out. Gotta love that lifetime warranty! I gave him what I had in my pocket at the time for the table and box. It ended up being $31.

That's all for last week. I just rolled the dice today and made a shotgun purchase for a box and some tools on ebay so as soon as I pick it up and sort it out I'll have some more pics to show. Now to finish reading through all of the cool stuff that you guys have found. Man this thread moves fast!

Happy hunting!

Hey, if the guy has another one - I'm in.
But don't put yourself out if it's bothersome. If it works out, PM me. If not, I'm ok.

Thanks,
jake

P.S. - I used to know an Eric Nordstrom. Spent (more than) a few hours at Charlie's after work with him and the guys. I really miss those days.

Went back to the estate sale on Saturday, picked up another torch. It's missing the pump knob, but for six bucks I like the design enough. Also picked up this very deco Craftsman compressor. I haven't looked into it to figure out what if was for, but it's real heavy. There were some rubber cut type feet, but they have come apart. I'll clean it up a bit in the next couple of days and see what it's really for, mostly I thought it was super stylish.

Hemlock: That compressor is an old school craftsman low pressure (20-40 psi) used with a HVLP paint gun. Redleader has one in perfect condition on his Vintage Craftsman Garage thread. I'll see if I can find it and edit to add it here.

Edit: Here is a great picture of it.

Also here is a little description of it.

Thanks for the links, Jeremy. Redleader's sure does look nice. I really only bought it because it does look so great, but I doubt I'll have much use for it. I have a buddy who paints, I'll have to see if he wants it.

Hemlock just remember, that compressor is something like 70 years old or more, so it may not be very compatible with modern guns. It's likely to pulse, and the pressure may not be comparable either.

Probably worth more as a tire air up pump for bikes, equipment tires, (wheel barrows, and hand trucks) and MAYBE small 8-12" trailer tires.

Two stops today.First one was a 3 hour window, gotta empty the house sale.
There were some steel cabinets in the CL ad I was interested in so I called and got an address from a girl who does alot of estate sale, knew each other when I got there, from other sales.Picked a few items and watched another guy unload and start to take the cabinets I had been after...oh well.
So I get my $15 worth of stuff(not all is pictured)
008.jpg

010.jpg

012.jpg
I also got an Ingersol Rand Circular saw(never seen one before, looks like old Porter Cable),some Coleman fuel/charcoal lighter,a reostat, and a power inverter 110/12 volt.
I leave, I am 20 mins down the road and my phone rings guy has decided cabinets are too much work,do I want them? Well I turn around and as we are on the phone the negotiation goes like this Cabinets are $50 each, you can have all 3 and anything else you find for $100!! So I claim the cabinets, begin to scrounge the garage for tools, scrap, etc.
I think I left with 200-300 lbs of scrap steel and some copper along with the cabinets ,which due to space restraints I ended up with 2 of the 3.
Did I mention the cabinets were Lyons modular steel parts cabinets with one unit having 8 huge ball bearing drawers?

Stop number two was a pre-estate sale I had made an appointment to attend at 5:00. I believe several tool trucks had backed up and dumped tools in the basement and garage;
First set of photos is from the "junk" stuff in the garage
016.jpg

015.jpg

014.jpg

013.jpg

All the sockets top left are Craftsman, middle front are Blackhawk, impacts in the center are Cornwell and Apex, about 9 oclock in the pic are Armstrong metric sockets still not all sorted.Unmarked oil filter pliers, a cool old SK Wayne blue box,Armstrong ,Klein and other pliers
I was able to get there first and scrounge before Rickster showed up.
Nothing was priced and the gentleman in charge of pricing was looking up the retail values on Ebay,we were in for a long evening.
Eventually things went alittle smoother, organized some stuff as to not buy too much redundancy and picked the rest of the stuff below:

I'm going to sort through my stuff later today. After I loaded a 5 gal bucket and my canvas bag into the back of the truck I realized I still had money leftover.... so I did what one here would expect and went back in for more! I bought another cardboard box full.

Snagged a few deals at the Habitat ReStore today.

Facom folding metric rule .50c
6ejypyba.jpg

2 Snap On ignition wrenches. .25c each
zazuda9u.jpg

5lbs of 1/4-20×1 1/2 BRASS machine screws. .50c per pound.
ubagegam.jpg

3lbs of other assorted screws. Also .50c per pound.
6abasype.jpg

Cool part is that most of the screws were made right here in CT.
If anyone in CT needs hardware the Cromwell restore has TONS and it is all .50c per pound. Some are oddball thread pitches though like 6-56 or 4-60. Must have been special purpose screws.

Well, I thought I had a couple of finds worthy of note, but after reading the last few pages, not so sure. Anyway, here goes:
Flea market - I was getting increasingly annoyed at the crappy recip saw in my Kawasaki 19.2V set (It was a gift. Honest.) so a Sawzall Hatchet cordless 18v caught my eye. It was lying on top of a Milwaukee 6 1/2" 18V circular saw. No batteries, no charger, no case, but the guy took $10 for the pair. How could I lose?
I then started looking around for batteries and charger online. Plenty available for not too much $. But, two days later I happened to be in the neighborhood of a used tool store I try to visit every few months. He had a charger for $15, but no batteries. I looked around a little more closely and discovered that although my saws were made for the 18V 2.4Ah PowerPlus NiCd batteries, the 18V 3Ah Lithium Ion batteries also work, and he had a 1/2" hammer drill with case, charger and two batteries. (one alive, one dead). We haggled a bit and I got the set for $75. Turned out the "dead" battery was fine, just needed charging. Sawzall works great, very fine control on the vary-speed. I cleaned things up a bit and discovered that the circular saw is apparently unused! A few toolbox nicks, but not a sign of wear, scuffing or scratching on the sole plate. I already have a decent smaller cordless circular saw which I seldom need, so out the Milwaukee goes. When the dust settles, I expect to have gotten the Sawzall, hammer drill, two batteries, charger and case, all in excellent working order, for $30.

Craig's List ain't all bad.
Looking for a welder, I found a Lincoln 225 tombstone 10 miles from home for $125 OBO. The seller actually returned my call within an hour! I went over right away. It's pretty rough cosmetically, but fully functional, and he let it go with power plug, ground and electrode cables for $80. Anybody know these iconic buzz boxes well enough to tell its age?

Bob, I'd make a WAG at 30 years old minimum.

Take the cover off, and any bolted electrical connection take loose, clean to bright and re-connect. "Clean bright and tight."

That and a good blow out/vacuuming of dust, Mouse and wasp nests and you have given it a "tune up."

Then go burn some rods!

All good advice.
My first project will involve some angle iron from bed frames pulled from a dump. Seems appropriate, somehow.

$4 today for a craftsman crown hip box that is missing the inside tray. Saw a 1/2" plvmb pebble ratchet (with a proto plate on it) but it was part of a larger collection of mismatch stuff for $25 and it was only for sale as part of the set. First time I've seen one of those, it was smooth.

3bay we should trade some of those goodies for this really rare one of a kind Williams ratchet I found:lol:
Seriously though if you want a closer look at that ratchet I could be persuaded to box it up.

I like this guy. After wading through your posts, here's to buying tools like they're going out of style!

I'll have to pm you on that ratchet.

Well I finally got around to some tool-hunting and thread-posting again. But rather than take a large chunk of this thread, I made a separate thread under General Tool Discussion. Look for the word "Brimfield," if you're interested in reading about the adventure.

Good advice from Outlawmws.
Be sure to clean the contacts that correspond with the amperage settings on the front.
The 60, 75 and 90 amp will probably be the worst since they are used most.
[At least on the buzzboxs I've cleaned up.]
Be sure to clean the movable contact.
Use a stone that is used to clean commutators.
If need be, use a points file. Smooth and clean.

Today was a very good day. I was able to meet up with Flatintoone aka Rick who was in town for the holiday weekend visiting family. We met up at a local flea market and I traded the PowrKraft Cantilever box I had picked up last week for a Whitman & Barnes drill index Rick had listed on Ebay ,we had exchanged Pm's back and forth during the week.

That looks pretty sweet.I'd hate to know what it was listed at.
Also I have zero room right now and would end up just taking the nameplate off and trying to find room for that....sacrilege!!
