I went to a sale the ad says he's got 40 years of tools in his barn that he's getting rid of. I get there about 20 min early but he said he got a late start could I come back in an hour. I return in an hour and it looks the same way it did when I left. The place was literally full with garbage. At this point there is about 5 or 6 other people waiting. I ask does he mind if I dig around he says go for it. So Im up to my neck in garbage and Im finding some cool things. I make a pile and ask him whats he looking to get for it. Oh thats not for sale and this is not for sale, I wondered where that went, I use that all the time. I just left what a waist of time.

Bonney Tools catalog from 1950
and
Trimo Ferguson Body Tools 1930!
I bet some guys would go nuts over this one.

<a href="http://s102.photobucket.com/user/nno16r/media/DSC04767_zps9cc0b883.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m85/nno16r/DSC04767_zps9cc0b883.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo DSC04767_zps9cc0b883.jpg"/></a>

They look about how one would expect 84 and 64 year old catalogs to look.

Worked out a price both for $15.

Bought them from a dealer, he had the body tool catalog at $15 a while back but I held off due to the price. I've been on the hunt for old catalogs because I enjoy them and looked Saturday to see if that one was still there. The Bonney catalog wasn't there before but appeared now, priced at $4. I told him if he hadn't rescued these who knows where they would have wound up.

Old tool adds and catalogs are cool and I have a hard time passing any of them up.

Reminds me of a catalog I purchased at an antique store. A little spendy at $40 but it was as close to a local company as one could find in North Dakota. This is 380 pages of anything you could ever need for your garage in 1933.

OK, I've seen enough posts of garage sale vintage padlocks with no keys that I've gotta ask the question (and hopefully will get a reply from Jeff Moss or others): Is it worth picking up old locks like this when the keys are missing? How difficult is it to get replacement keys? I passed up a great Craftsman crown top brass padlock last weekend because it had no keys and I didn't want to invest $ in a locksmith's time to obtain a replacement key. Maybe I'm missing something here....??? :headscrat

I make keys for vintage padlocks all the time and I lose money making them... I mostly do it for the challenge. Most antique American made padlocks are not worth that much. Or I guess I should say, they are worth what you are willing to pay. I'm $60 an hr as a locksmith but usually charge flat rate for keys made by impressioning. If I have to find a blank that matches, then impression it (and usually the old ones have damaged or corroded tumblers or internal components. It's easy to spend an hour messing with one. $15 is not worth it to me. There are plenty of lock hackers that do his stuff for fun. Look into www.TOOOL.us if you have one and want keys made for them.

It depends on the lock.
If there's a code stamped on it, it's generally easy and cheap(er) to have a key made.
If there is no code, something old like a lever padlock, then it's going to take a good amount of time from a locksmith. A few of the guys I know will take an hour or more to clean and pick the lock, make a blank from scratch, cut it to fit the lock, etc.

Picked these up this week at an ES that I just happened upon. Not much in the way of good tools but it was near closing that day and I bet anything else put out was picked over. These gems were buried in plastic bins of misc junk. In fact I almost missed the ratchet except for something telling me to make one extra pass through the various bins before leaving.
Small angle nose vise grips made by Peterson.
A Snap-On flex head 3/8 drive ratchet with 6" SK extension.
A 16" SK breaker bar with 3/4" SK deep well socket.
When I asked for a price they surprised me with $5 for all. I paid as fast as possible and got to the car.

Kicking off the weekend with a speeder handle and a breaker bar both $1 ea. and a Craftsman box to refinish for $2. Is this a sign of things to come?

I ran all the way out to an afternoon family run estate sale today. All the tools were junk quality.

Since I was in the area (only 20miles away ) I went down to the Habitat ReStore. Nothing much there, but I did pick up a Hubble female receptical and a General Tools reamer for $1 each. I spent more on gas running around.

Lots of yard sales to choose from this weekend. I hope I go to the right ones. :dunno:

I discovered a new (to me) resale shop on my way home from work today. And could not help but rescue this Craftsman box from their shelves. It needs TLC and a re-paint but will look good on top of my new C-man roller cabinet.

I could not find the date code anywhere but I'm not sure where to look on this style box. Any ideas out there how to date this thing. It's not super old or anything but it's always nice to know.

They wanted $20 and settled for $15 out the door tax included.

If it was made by Waterloo, then try looking in the top compartment on the left hand side (possibly towards the front) for a date stamp.

That style handle makes me think that it is after the early sixties, but I'd be willing to bet that the box was made in the late 70's. I await one of the guru's opinions to set me right.

certainly no earlir than this, possibly much later:

Am I seeing it right? 20" wide, but 12" front to back? :dunno:

Good thought but no date stamp in that area I can see. Hopefully a good Simple Green scrubbing tomorrow will reveal some hidden date.

It's 18.5" wide and 8.5" deep x 12" high. I was thinking 70's or 80's possibly with the stippled plastic handle and the cheaper Craftsman logo decal rather than a raised emblem.

6 planned stops this morning, and 2 TOO's. Almost 50mi traveled. Apparently, the term "tools" in an ad is code for "baby toys". I had better luck at the TOO's than the planned stops.

Actually, it wasn't that bad. The problem was that any of the decent tools that I might have been interested in were walking out with someone else when I arrived. I went to one stop an hour early and I still got beat out. I did, however, pick up some cheap clothes for my 13mo nephew while I was out. :lol_hitti

I also found a 60qt Igloo Cube cooler for our party deck for $5.

The only tools I came home with were :

Walworth "Genuine Stillson" 24" (22") pipe wrench
Mill-Rose 1-1/2" wire pipe brush
(almost) 2lbs of solder
1pr M/F 15a Hubbel connectors
Lutz File & Tool Co. (CINTI O. [sic]) roller

I only spent $10.50 on tools today.

I'm getting the feeling sailing around here has already peeked out and on the decline. It seems like people that wanted to have a G-sale this summer have already had one. Today was a bust but these were from yesterday.

Anyone familiar with this? I'm guessing it's a sharpening machine. It seems very well made. (uses 1.5" X 24" belts). The entire platen and pulley system is adjustable to different angles. It was $10:

Old CM vise. I haven't seen this style before with a lube port in the dynamic jaw. It's quite heavy for it's size. (4"). It was $20:

Not much in the way of sales today. Most were just general knickknacks and baby clothes/toys. Only found one with tools and snagged a few good pieces out of the box of mostly chinese stuff.

934b3f3f399e23bd76f040211309e338.jpg

2 possibly home made squares.
8" Utica adustable. (This wrench is smooth as silk)!
And a 3"x4"x1/2" chunk of copper.
$3 for all. Talked him down from $5.

Also found one of those huge wooden cable spools for a buck but had no way to get it home. Really wanted it too. My yard feels incomplete since my last spool table rotted and had to be tossed[emoji25]

You are correct, that machine is for sharpening knives. I used to use an older version when I worked at a knife store. You have to be VERY careful not to let the blade overheat. Keep a quench tray and rag nearby to keep the blade cool. They overheat quickly.

I hope you have a chain and padlock to secure that vise. There are members here who'll be hunting you to get to it.

Dave post the vise in the vise thread so Oldie can tell you to paint it "arrest me red"! its a 5191, Columbian made fixed version of the 5196, and the largest in the fixed base version in '48. those are for their size, one of the best made vises around. not one but two anti backlash devises keeps it tight and it should weigh about 48 lbs if a 48; if up to 52 lbs, its a later vise from around 57 or so.

Well, I was supposed to be on the selling side this weekend, but the kids procrastinated so we postponed it..

So this was what I found today. I'd say things are slowing a little also fewer stops with pickings but one or two good ones can make the difference.

First stop was OK but all of this came from the "dollar" box. I also got a concrete edging tool I forgot to put in the pic, also for a buck.

A Thayer Air brush, Sterno, 2 master locks (the tag had the combo...), Tiny NOS brass hinges, Odd Jack knife and a brush that looks to have been used once, but properly cleaned

attachment.php

Then after a number of dead stops, an estate sale, probably well picked over but tools were left: A Lufkin protractor head & tri square (painted olive drab so possibly military issue? :dunno: ) plumb BPH, Stanley No 11 ratcheting screwdriver ( I didn't notice it was ratcheting til I got home and looked things over; the vultures were hovering over my shoulder...) A Victor plane, Wilkinson's Tool dykes from England, A file with a handle and a File handle, and the wrench is Taiwan but tricked me as it looks exactly like old school US stuff... rust and crud on the label... :p

attachment.php

A gun smith's Will-Burt VersaVise :rocker:

attachment.php

Misc. Wrenches (I Swear their "Uncle who was a maintenance mech" must have brought these tools home "one part at a time!" like the old Johnny Cash song!), Craftsman DBE, Bonney, Willaims, Barcalo pebble, Thorsen...

attachment.php

This box I almost missed, and just took it entire: again; "one too at a time!"... Craftsman RHFT Wards, Proto LA, Long C Craftsman, Indestro, Thorsen...

attachment.php

And lastly from the Estate sale, NOS Gloves, machinest's hammeror BPH handle:

The remaining stops were dead or light on tools, but still a few small scores:

Knipex Cable cutters for cents fifty, and Channellock 460s for a BUCK! :pimpflash (I was careful not to damage my hand or arm or tear my pocket getting my wallet out... ) :eyecrazy:

attachment.php

$4 for a small pistol or instrument Case

attachment.php

A buck for this padded fanny pack case

attachment.php

25 centavos for a hardbound version of Norm Abram's NYW book.

attachment.php

And $12 for NOS pair of True Temper hatchets - Father and son versions? the small one barely weighs 8 oz, total.

Outlaw - the mental image of you wearing a fanny pack is unsettling. TMI. :spit:

:dunno: I wear one hiking all the time. I punched holes in its belt for a WW II canteen pouch, (that holds a 1918 aluminum cap canteen) and even rivet reinforced the holes. The top has my skinning knife on snap straps inside it, and its full of handy to have stuff when hiking; hunting; fishing.

This one will probably never be worn; i'll use it for a carry pouch for camp trips to pad small gear.

Went to 4 sales today, of course only one had any tools. It was 75 percent off day so I got everything pictured for a grand total of $5.25!!

Western Electric 2554 wallphone (need to test)
Xcelite long nose pliers
2 "Ford" wrenches - I always buy these for a coworker who does blacksmithing as a hobby
Master padlock hasp
Waldes Truarc pliers
Craftsman 3/8 ratchet (never seen one like this before)
Pocket screwdriver
Klein/Bell System diagonal cutters
Master 'Champ' padlock, no combination
Slaymaker padlock, with combination tag, works!
