More flea market saves - you can tell the flea season is slowing up, even when the weather is beautiful the market isn't full, lotsa empty spaces since some of the more lackluster sellers won't come out because it's "too cold", with mornings in the low 50s. Must be thin-skinned folks, I'm from the north and cold doesn't bother me.

Anyways, the tools!

pic 1: all for $7
LARGE Craftsman framing hammer, must be 18 inches long, and an Arrow staple gun.

pic 2: all for $15
A little steep for the Craftsman die holder, but it was in nice shape and I need one for a project now. Also: Firestone-branded T-handle driver, a spark plug gap tool, and 3 Craftsman universal 3/8-drive sockets in metric sizes

pic 3: all for $3
Ford DOE wrench, a long-C Craftsman pair of lineman's pliers, and a Herbrand DOE wrench, a 731-A which was an original size of the WWII Willys MB jeep tool set.

pic 4: $3
Western Electric GE11 junction box, never used and only mild scratches from storage. Very neat and thick metal, will last a long time as a storage box for my shop.

pic 5: $5
Stanley Handyman jack plane, very good condition, and made in USA!

After a summer full of projects and commitments I finally was able to hit some sales

Pic 1 Phoenix fan made in Brooklyn $10
Pic 2 Rockwell drill $5 3/4" conduit bender $3 mystery steel strapping tool $3 looked cool so I bought it
Pic 3 vintage grey hound arc welder very heavy and built like a tank. Copper tranformer windings made when things were built to last $50. 91 year old owner laid some beads to show me it worked. Great guy and he was still tinkering in his shop fixing things. Very inspiring man

Went to 2 dozen sales today. Even the ones advertising lots of tools were a joke.
Only scored two things. A machinery's handbook for .50 and a Snap On speeder for $2.00.

This might not be the place for this but i wanted to post an update on the hand crank drill i picked up last weekend. I promised i would post pictures of progress and it came out better then expected.

The drill works great but the chuck still needs a tune up. For some reason, one of the jaws doesn't want to work as a team when opening or closing.

I've restored a couple of these. If one of the jaws isn't working, you'll probably find that there is a burr on the outside of that jaw and/or scoring on the inside of the chuck. There's a good amount of information on the 'net on these.
One of the better tutorials with good pictures/explanations is about brace restorations, but the chuck jaw info will be helpful to you. Google The Humble Hand Brace (it's on the LumberJocks site) and you should find it. Good luck!

i should take the weekend off, since I have a lot to clean and sort through... but it's getting colder and sales are going to stop soon, so I should stockpile for winter, right?

I SHOULD have taken today off; 7 planned stops, a number of TOO's, asked "how much?" 3 times, all three times they wanted it more than I did...

SKUNKED! NADA! ZILCH!

:dunno:

Been a LONG time since I came home empty handed...

Had a good morning at the swap meet today. Got there early, hit the good vendors first, and spent all the money I brought! In fact, sitting down to sort it out is a bit overwhelming... Here's a preview, details to follow:

looks like a good haul. It'd be an even better story if you had left the house with $5 in your wallet. I think I see a Craftsman Amber handle ratchet and whats in the small SK tin?Looks like there is alot of trade value in there.

Great day for a swap meet. Of course, that means that people were complaining about the 75-degree heat predicted for the day... :headscrat

Alinc, I wish I left the house with only $5!!!

On with the score:
Part 1-Socket Sets

That's a Kraeuter 3/8 and 1/4 set, A Craftsman metric 1/4 set with an RHFT in a Crown box, an SK 1/4 set that is nearly flawless, and a New Britain 3/8 drive set.

Automotive Special Tools and Misc:

That's a Zim valve spring compressor, a Snap-On distributor wrench, a K-D valve spring compressor, New Britain brake pliers, Herbrand brake spoon, Craftsman offset screwdriver, Snap-On spark plug gapper, and a K-D flex driver.

Part 2 to follow...

Incidentally, I overheard more than one shopper saying that he was replacing his Craftsman tools because any warranty replacements would be Chinese. Also had several sellers point out that the Craftsman tools I was buying were the 'good ones', not the current production.

Part 3: Pliers and wrenches

Starting at upper left, and just naming manufacturer-Klein, Utica, Plomb, Proto, Sargent, Diamond, Hinsdale. Starting at lower left-Artisan, Kraeuter (old), Kraeuter (newer), and New Britain. Since no one here collects Plomb/Plvmb and will not ask me for a close-up, here's one anyway:

And, finally,

Indestro, Indestro, Indestro, Matco, MAC, Herbrand, SK, SK.

Oh wait, did someone want to see the ratchets and socket tools?

Part 3: Ratchets/Sockets/Etc.

I think I got some really cool stuff here :rocker::

From the top-Craftsman 3/8 breaker bar (with badly flaking chrome!), Indestro Super 3/8 breaker bar, Snap-On early ratcheting adapter, Snap-On Industrial Speeder (doesn't appear on AA, I found it in only one place on the Collecting Snap-On site), Indestro female hex-drive ratchet, Penncraft 1/2 and 3/8 ratchets, Penncraft 3/8 universal, Kraeuter 1/4 extension, Challenger and Powr-Kraft 1/4 drive spinner handles, 2 Craftsman =v= extensions, 1 Walden 3/8 drive extension, a Craftsman 1/2" Drive BE ratchet (my first), and an amber-handled Craftsman 3/8" Drive BE ratchet (first time I've ever even seen one!). Sockets are: Craftsman, Craftsman, Craftsman, International Harvester, International Harvester, SK Wayne, Indestro Super, OTC, Husky, Champion Spark Plug, early Blackhawk.

You should have seen what I left because it was too expensive or in poor condition!

Picked up this anvil for $20, and angle vise, drill press vice(cheap Taiwan made), clamp vice- Unknown origin, 3 screw cabinets, card file cabinet that I'm gonna store sand paper in, small hammer, big screwdriver, small bolt cutters, Budweiser sign, 4 square corner clamps Stanley, 2 jerry cans from the 50’s (I think), bag of screws and bolts, all for about $35. How'd I do?

Great stuff bluebolt, especially that reed. What is that small snap on ratchet 1/4"? Can you post some pics or numbers off that toolmakers/dp vise with base? That looks interesting.

The ratchet is the 9/32 one from that "Socket Wrenches" box set. It's a Midget M-70L, everything in the kit is date coded for 1941 so it's probably pre-WWII.

The vise is a North Brothers Yankee 992 with a 1992 swivel base. This one came out of the shop and was priced at $20, the identical one in the house garage was priced at $50 LOL.

Today's hunt was 4 planned sales and 2 TOO's.

Most of the stops hadn't set up until they opened so there was a lot of standing around. Even an hour after the advertised opening, some of them still hadn't put everything out. :wtf:

Most of the stops were the usual. They advertise tools and either they don't have any, or it's a handful of broken hacksaws and bent chinese screwdrivers.

The first stop was the usual disappointment. The second stop was almost as bad, but I did walk away with a couple glue sticks and a full bottle of lighter fluid to fuel my smoking habit (pic 1).

The third stop was a honey hole, it made me wonder what I missed by going to the other stops first (pic 2). :bounce:

The fourth and fifth stops were TOO's (pic 3 & 4).

The sixth stop was a planned stop that wasn't worth the gas.

My total for the day was $30, and almost as much in gas running around. :(

Pic 1 - $2
A full bottle of lighter fluid and 6 glue sticks

Pic 2 - $25

Took the day off yesterday while the weather is still good, so hit a bunch of sales yesterday. Most all were busts. Even hit one specifically advertised as a "Tool Sale" but most everything was big stuff and top dollar so my best hope was a dud. Was still able to find the following though but it took a lot of running and digging ! and we will not talk about the gas burned.........

Ford/McKaig-Hatch Pliers $0.50

Mac Combo wrench $1

Williams S-52 ratchet barely used $4

Proto pebble finish line wrench $1

At least I was able to find some quality

Very nice Craftsman box for $5. You definitely **** on that one.

no dents anywhere except the front cover. just some missing paint and scrapes from years of use.
think its worth 50 bucks?
ive seen some old kennedys on clist for 40 all the time. this one has some character.

Closer looks at a couple of the more interesting things from today's haul:

Snap-On 1/2" drive ratcheting adapter. This style was apparently in the catalog through the '20s. This one works. Push down on the drive end, and the two sets of teeth mesh, locking the driven end to the drive end. Release, and they freewheel.

I'm gathering that the BE ratchet with the amber handle is really rare? According to AA, it was only available for a few years, and only in one particular set. I'm not coming up with very much ebay history on this thing...

If you can date it, clean it up but leave original it may fetch that much to the right collector. Maybe not quite. Kennedy's still seem to have the name recognition. But this one seems rare. Other GJ members may have better insight. Still a very nice unique box.

One more thing about today's haul...
I mentioned the SK 1/4" drive set that was "nearly flawless"-it looks to have seen very little use, with the only problem a bit of rash blemishing the ratchet. Tonight I discovered a hand-written note in the bottom of the box reading "Dec. 10, 1957."

I hope I'm not reading too much into it, but I wonder if that was a note from the original owner or the original seller, perhaps for warranty records?

Or, it could just be the last owner trying to remember his wife's birthday...:dunno:

Probably his wife's birthday, speaking of which that's a smart idea for me to do!:lol_hitti

Well I spent a little time cleaning up the Plomb tool box and tools,

Flat I suspect those were both Amber handled, and the 1/2" got "used" til it came off.

The only catalog I know it shows in is 1942. (but I don't have them all) Surely the production of the amber sets stopped in 42 due to the war effort.

First garage sale of the day I saw this gem. 20 dollars for the sand blaster. I thought it was cool enough to take a closer look, it also included 2 older paint guns, an older respirator, 2 foot ruler, manual for one of the guns, a painting booklet, a little storage thing, some sort of tubing for a gauge, a coil of wire, and at least one spider. Which I just found a few minutes ago and is now in my bedroom plotting my demise I am sure. The respirator has slightly rusty bits, but the tag is still on it so I think it may be un or little used. Don't know about the paint guns, black one is a craftsman, silver one is a Sears.

I also got a stereo for my truck for 6 bucks at the garage sale next to the first one, still not sure if it works or not. I put an adapter harness on it, but all I can get it to do is light up when I turn the lights on. I am getting power from the factory fittings according to my multimeter, but not sure what is going wrong on the main power line in the harness. I need to take it out and check the important connections. Thinking back I need to double check if I am getting power on the ignition line versus the light wire. But probably not until tuesday or later monday will I have time to really go through it. If nothing else a hammer will get me 6 dollars worth of frustration relief out of it.
