Fantastic find!

There's too much there to handle alone or even with a helper from a basement.

The Vari-slo and table lift will complicate it, but take it apart as much as you can:
- remove motor with motor mount
- remove feed handles
- remove quill locking lever
- remove head frame locking lever
- remove vari-slo locking knob and remove the top lever... be careful not to lose the small clamping pad.
- remove head frame and vari-slo;
- lay head frame on the left side
- remove table/table lift
- remove column from base

An 8" adjustable wrench will do and you'll need a set of allen wrenches. a box or bucket for parts.

Sounds good, going to pick it up once my buddy gets here!

Was out today at garage sales and came across a rotating 3-sided Owatonna Tool Company (OTC) Store/Service Station/Sales Display with cast iron base. Each side is 28-1/2 inches by 16 inches, with company logo showing they were out of Owatonna Minnesota USA.

I'd not run across this before, so bought it.

Pictures attached and wondered if anyone had found a similar rotating version for the Owatonna Tool Company.

Great find! Can you tell if it's for pullers and special tools, or regular hand tools? Any date on it?

OK not a lot, but better than what I expected. one estate sale (everything came from there) and a dud Garage sale. But better than being skunked by the weather.

SK-Wayne Ratchet kit missing the 6" extension and two 1/4" drive sockets. I always open these blow mold boxes expecting import ****. This was a nice surprise. the lid was with it but the hinge parted ways long ago, and even the latch is gone... a Millers falls 1/4" ratchet (probably SK? :dunno: ) a USA T55 Torx, (unknown brand) a Stanley hacksaw blade holder, and three Craftsman sockets/driver.

attachment.php

Nylon Line - destined for the camping gear. This stuff is easier to see, so less likely to trip on it or lose it..., Wood embroidery rings, (I'l use these on a speaker grill repair), Silver plate lid, a full can of Dust-off (it still was wrapped partly in plastic) 3M electrician's tape, and a tungsten tip Scriber in a pen case.

attachment.php

For SWMBO: a nice padded portfilio and a taylors Curve Stick.

$30 all

Cbacers, good deal on the box of hole saws!

3bay,Looks like some good stuff in there. What is the brand on the flex head ratchet?

Sounds good, going to pick it up once my buddy gets here!

That is a heck of a deal on a nice machine. Hope it works out.

Real slow weekend around here. Two sales one had a number of tools but most were pretty expensive for the condition and quality. Picked up these for $2 total.

Thanks guys,

Smokeshow, the Firestones (yep total Plombness) I thought were cool to find as a pair. The 1/2 sockets with a ring are just Husky though.

Outlaw No Proto/Plomb. All I see on the hammer after a little cleanup is a "10".
Normally I would carry a light but this was an impromptu. Guys had their fancy phone lights and I was still doing circles around them in the dark at first.

zkling, It's a cheapo vanadium no name.

First stop: Garage/Tool Sale. Some overpriced Craftsman socket sets, but I found this stuff:

100-year old Utica Staple Pliers, Barcalo Slip-Joints, and a Laco 6" Adjustable.

Second stop: Day 2 of an estate sale. The Kennedy Machinist's top and middle boxes were gone, but the modern/imported power tools were overpriced (and still there). I was pretty happy with what I found.

Snap-On 1954 1/2" drive ratchet and sockets (I was surprised to come home and find I had an almost-complete set), a Snap-On 1/2" allen socket, 3 Challenger sockets, SO 1/4" drive extension, Craftsman =v= 1/4" breaker bar, 1/2" drive sockets by SK, Indestro, Craftsman Underline, and Craftsman =v=. Plus some Thorsen 1/4" sockets and a Bridgeport screwdriver.

Not much today but some cool stuff for a couple bucks. Acorn scraper, ford, Blackhawk, and another autokit wrench. Best part for me was some old promotional items from a hardware store. We stopped there and they had a whole stack of them just sitting there in a pile of dust. They laughed when I asked if I could have one. The lady working there then went in back and dug up a fan for me. (the other side is just a picture of" the last supper". Probably my favorite items for the day. They had all sorts of old and new things...bit mostly imports and high prices. Still a cool place to look around.

Well, seller used a "stock photo", meaning he googled it and just tossed up the photo... So, it's a mid-60's Craftsman 150 in bronze, not a mid-50's with the heritage logo... He saw I was a little dissapointed, and quickly dropped the price to $50, so I quickly said sure and got it in the wagon.

I felt bad, tried to give him $80 but he refused. Gave him $60 and told him not to worry about the $10, but still snuck it in my pocket. He bought it used in the 80's, and the only reason why he's not using it anymore is because he has parkinsons... the reason why he didn't take any real pictures either... But, regardless, it's a mid-60's 150 with Vari-Slow and shop light. Plus a small vise and whatever that Boston branded thing is. Haven't turned it on yet, but will try it once kiddo goes to sleep later. For $50, I'll keep it and use it til I find a mid-50's.

Well don't YOU ****!

That "Boston" brand is for the pillow block bearing I suspect; and I further suspect it was to hold some tool inline while the DP drove it. Does the bearing align with the center line of the spindle/chuck?

$50 is an awesome deal, even twice that would have been a deal with the vari-slo, lamp and vise so you did well!

So all it really lacked from the "stock photo" was the table lift.

That vari slow is probably worth 3X what you paid.

That was really crappy to do and not mention it. You still got a good deal, but wow, I would have been a bit disappointed to say the least.

And condition. :lol_hitti You should have seen the photo posted, it was freshly restored. Pretty crappy of the seller but again it is craigslist.

I did see the photo. it was pretty spectacular!

And IMO, Eprey has far more effect on peoples asking prices than what we discuss here, esp in this thread. :dunno:

Oh I know I did well, and I'm happy it still had the Vari-Slow, but still on the hunt for a heritage logo model... like I said, I'll clean and use this one, but it's not what I want and eventually will flip it.

Tough weekend for me since the garage sales have been frozen out! Thursday morning estate sales netted a 3/8dr Williams ratchet and an old school =V= 10 pc SAE wrench set.

Friday morning the pics from a sale out in St Clair Shores looked promising with a couple of Snap-on boxes & cardboard boxes of tools on the tables. But the tools turned out to be picked over by the family (I hope) and just a small amount of way overpriced Snap-on remained. I managed to get a good deal on the Snap-on puller because it had some surface rust on it. Then I found two additional longer arms for it. Also got the Blue Point puller, Snap-on 3/8dr thumb wheel, Matco & SK screwdrivers for a good price.

Saturday morning I was out in Commerce freezing (33 degrees and windy) for a little estate sale in a garage. Once again the pics looked promising but the tools turned out to be a lot of HF chicom stuff. Managed to find a Klein crimper, couple of Mac metric wrenches and a Sheffield England body hammer.

I think that the Power Bronze Crowntop looks just fine. But if you have your heart set on an industrial Grey Heritage 150 instead, at least you already have the Vari-Slo for it. So maybe you can get one for less. Just remember to take it off the crowntop before you flip it.

In fact, you could possibly save a little bit more by looking for a benchtop and swap out the posts. Then you can sell the Crowntop as a bench model and still have a floor model in your shop.

Picked up a Wilton vise today, my first, along with some other goodies. Vise in the first photo, in the second photo: Giant C clamp, hand saw, vintage pipe wrench, Estwig hammer, made in Japan Craftsman Vise, head of a weed rake; cast iron, hand cranked, corn shucker, cast iron tea pot, and a red coleman style lantern with metal case. Paid $75.00 for all.

I'm sorta new here...did I do ok?

One crummy estate sale today. I spent 45 minutes in the garage digging through boxes loaded with, well . . .junk. Still, it was a lot of fun digging for treasure. You yard sale- holics know what I'm talking about. Anyway, I did come across one 1920's era >Blue Points Chicago< wrench. That was cool. The only cool thing, but cool.

Just one purchase this weekend so far from a CL ad. Picked up this 65 pound thrust Minn Kota trolling motor for my small fishing boat. Seller let me try it on his truck battery first and after a little haggling we settled at $40.

Yeah, you ****!

I'm trying to see how the Vari Slo works. I understand the Reeves pulley principle ok, but I don't quite see what the speed control lever does. Are there TWO Reeves pulleys, both of the double pulleys between the motor and spindle? Or is one of the doubles just an idler? What is the speed range of the VariSlo, without moving belts? The reason I ask is that I have a CVT setupwith one Reeves pulley of unknown origin I'm thinking of putting on my Rockwell radial drill press. If it takes two variable pulleys to get a decent speed range, it wouldn't be worth the effort. Thanks for any enlightenment you can offer.

Well, seller used a "stock photo", meaning he googled it and just tossed up the photo... So, it's a mid-60's Craftsman 150 in bronze, not a mid-50's with the heritage logo...

Estate auction today - retired carpenter, had a lot of stuff. Had a pretty good collection of guns and knives too. Wound up with 5 pristine USA pocket knives, 2 Mora Classic knives, a pipe vise, hand pipe threader with mismatched dies, Greenlee fish tape, and an old Wizard hand box that I may just clean and clear coat. Not a bad day for $59

fired up the press, sounds great! except something sounds like its bouncing around a bit in the motor... then got a bearing noise in the motor after running it for two minutes or so... meh, the motor's not much different from a block grinder, right? should be an easy fix.

I don't know much of the system itself, but from playing with it a tad, it has two pulleys on the spindle, two in the middle, 3 on the motor. when you move the handle to the faster speeds, it tilts the motor forward, and the belt on the spindle slips from the smaller top pulley to the larger bottom pulley. it says on it from 750 rpms to 3750 rpms.

Hey, rickhigginshtbr (an alias if I ever heard one)

If I'm reading your last post correctly, your CVT (continuously variable transmission) isn't working properly. I just took a closer look at your picture, and I think there are indeed two variable (Reeves) pulleys. The motor should not move when you move the speed control arm. Instead, it pulls both the middle sets of pulleys forward. This works against the springs in the center sections of the pulleys, forcing the motor belt deeper into the groove of the back Reeves pulley, which in turn forces the middle belt higher in its groove, which forces the middle belt deeper into the forward Reeves pulley, and the spindle belt higher in its groove in the forward Reeves pulley. That gives the higest speed, since the motor drives the smallest diameter.
Moving the speed control back to the slowest position allows the springs in the Reeves pulleys to take over, moving the center section back to where the motor is driving the largest diameter. Since there is a reciprocal relationship between the diameters, the overall distance between the motor and spindle doesn't change. Neither does the distance between the two Reeves pulleys-you can see they're tied together by the adjuster strut. All that changes is the position of the Reeves pulley pair between the motor and spindle.
Lock down the motor and try the VariSlo again. Unless they're frozen, you'll see the centers of the Reeves pulleys move up and down as you move the speed control. If they don't move, you've got some teardown/clean/lube to do
.
Clearly, that's too much work for you. Just set it out on the driveway and I'll get U-Ship to come pick it up and end your nightmare!:lol_hitti

Somewhere in here - probably Fabrication - there's a long and fascinating thread on machining new CVT pulleys for a Bridgeport mill.
edit: Oops, now that I think about it, it's a bandsaw - a big Powermatic, maybe. Couldn't find it with a quick search.

Here it is!!: Building a new Do-All band saw variable drive
by: a_pmech

At least I got the forum right on the first guess - it is in Fabrication and Techniques.

I'm not 100% sure about that, the motor is on pivots, and there is a bump stop on the bottom of the mount with a long screw. Turn the screw in all the way, you can go to lower rpm's without playing with the vari-slo. I guess you can say mine was set at 1200rpms when I got it home and realized that. I put the screw all the way in, and it sits around 750rpms without playing with the vari-slo.

Some free tools from a garage cleanout. Things were pretty well cleaned out by the time I got there. Any ideas on the pliers/cutters?

Those parallel jaw pliers are worth trying to clean up. They're great for glass cutting after scoring or bending/flattening small pieces of metal.

Those pliers could be Manley's also. A lot of old school fisherman use them, the compound action make them great for cutting hooks.

Here you go!

Forgot about the racks purchased - Gorilla rack $4, both of the cheap racks $1

Knives ranged from $3 to $11 each. Mixture of USA Schrade (1 with rabbit scrimshaw), MTech, and an old Imperial Scout knife. 2 Mora Classics were $4 each. Missed out on a scrimshawed 2 blade trapper - went for $10

Pipe vise and threader $4 each (not sure what to do with 3 of the dies. Two are 3 5/8" hub diameter, One is 2 1/2" and do not fit the handle)

Old Wizard (Western Auto?) handbox $1. Upon review, this is still solid, but in rough shape.

Not pictured - Greenlee fish tape. Have to find the ticket, can't remember if $3 or $4. Not sure how long it is, but it dwarfs my 100' tape.

Nice set of knives there BigSteve. I look for them but don't often see good examples show up in local sales especially at those prices. Nice score.
