Craftsman Porta Torch!
I've after one of these smaller torch sets of a long tome now. I keep missing them at auctions when the prices go north of $150-$200. This one turned up on CL the other day and I was lucky enough to be the first to respond. Just picked it up today. It will need a gas bottle but has a good Oxy tank with some left in it. Good torch, hoses and regulators. $50

This should last a bit longer than the cheap china **** one I got at Home Depot. That lasted about 18 months and the replaced China **** ballast didn't last that long. This is sealed NOS Made in USA light fixture, now that's a hard one to find. Paid $10.

A neighbor who was a woodworker with a very nice shop in his basement passed away a couple years ago and now his widow is getting ready to move and sell off his equipment and tools. I have to say that I wish he was still living as he was a very nice guy. So I respectfully approached his widow about looking at what she was selling. Walking into his shop was like a kid walking into a candy store. Many hand tools on the wall and power tools. I purchased a 6" Bison vise in good shape. Also bought a Sanborn Cast Iron Series 30 gal belt drive air compressor (like new) and a Dewalt DW708 Dual Bevel Compound Miter Saw on a Delta table that folds with wheels (also excellent condition). Paid $20 for the vise, $150 for the compressor, and $300 for the saw + table combo. They will get good use and I will smile while I use them and think about him.

A few things I picked up in the last week or so:

1) This Baldor 439B bench grinder. Looks brand new, or at least very low hours. Found at the pawnshop:

2) At the same pawnshop I found this Wen soldering gun - basically free when bundled with the grinder:

3) Then the other day I hauled some junk metal to the scrap yard and saw these laying around:

A nice cast pedestal for the other Baldor I picked up recently.

And this old Craftsman Band Saw. We agreed I'd give him $25 for it if it worked and $15 if it didn't. Plugged it in at the yard and nothing happened. Took it home for $15, plugged it in and it runs like a champ. Needs some cleaning, lube and a paint job is all.

I just found out that one of my go-to places for used tools will be closing in two weeks.

125 Tools in Plaistow NH will be closing it's doors soon. Anything left unsold will be going to the auction house. The owner decided that with fewer tool users out there, competition from the box stores with cheap chinese tools, and a new TSC store that opened down the street last year, he just wasn't doing enough sales to stay open.

His prices were a bit high for used retail, but he always had a wide variety of used name brands on hand, and avoided buying cheap imports when he could.

I've bought a lot of good tools from him over the last 25yrs. I don't get over there very often anymore, but I still like to wander the isles when I can.
He'll be missed. [sniff]

Not brand new to me but I got all this recently off CL. guy said he collected a bunch of them over the years and never did anything with them. $150 for all.
Sorry for phone quality pictures

(the coolest one in the whole bunch)

Picked these up more lately. $10 for the Grinder..

Pretty happy with the whole bunch. everything works and this is the start to my tool collection.

Not nickel, 99% certain all of those are aluminum.

Be sure to verify ALL of those aluminum cased tools have a proper ground and no brittle insulation inside. Easy fix but you got to look.

Picked this up from a craigslist ad this morning. Seller was asking $80 with a home-made wood cabinet on wheels as a base, got it for $50 by itself. Not pristine, but certainly not abused either. I like the drawer layout. Seller was super nice, also picked up a really cool DAM Quick fishing reel, and he threw in an old oak ammo box. Plans are to use it as is for the time being, but hope to refinish it when I get a chance.

That box still has the original sticker, I think a good wash/clay bar and wax would bring it back to life!

I hate to say it, but I'm afraid cleaning it up might really enhance the bad spots where the paint is worn, scratched, highlight the rust, etc... The handles although straight, have lost a lot of the chrome, not sure what I'm going to do about them. I'm just gonna give it a quick wipe down and go from there.

Very similar to yours. The center drawer on this one looks narrower. By the way, nice score on the Baldor. I'm looking out for one myself. Don't have many pawn shops around my way, I'm hoping for a garage sale or craigslist deal someday.

Yes it is! I'll post some more pics up at the end of the weekend but its a General Electric Portable Power Tool Kit.
Saw, Sander, and Drill all in one! three screws is all it takes to transform it. Came with original box, packaging, hell even the sandpaper in it would seem to be original haha. Really cool piece in really good shape. Got lucky with that one for sure!

My Dad had one of those. We used it many times. Lost it in a fire though.

^ Hahah I wish I had somewhere else to put them! I'm renting a room while I work out of state this semester and haven't taken them home yet. No garage or anything so this is the only place they can go. Not much of a room anymore! Welder is in the bottom left of the pic, got a set of wheels in the top left as well as a truck tailgate for another project I'll be working on soon with the welder and more junkyard stuff for/from my Honda under the bed lol. Really need a garage space..

My first good score in a long time, a really, really long time but it was worth it finally! :willy_nil

Second stop first, I got the yoga mat(tool box liners) $0.50, Proto 18" breaker bar $5, Nova model kit $1(for a gift), bunch of brass and stainless fittings $3
01694.jpg

First stop, first visit, I picked up 18 lbs of drywall screws and the brads and staples all for $3, Dietzgen ruler and Miller Falls level(couldn't find the ruler for it) both were $1 each
01695.jpg

And my personal favorite, and xmas gift to myself this year(selfish I know :( ) a complete 23 piece Metric SK set for $50 :rocker:
01697.jpg

Then I inquired about a planer, the guy working the shop said he thought they wanted $50 but the cashier said that since it was a Delta, it would be more & that I could leave my info and they would call me when they spoke with the family. I offered $60 but she refused so I left a card and hit the second sale (first pic). After leaving that second sale, I knew I needed to pick something up to hopefully make some grocery money so I stopped back by the first sale to check on the planer. The lady said $100 this time, I kept my poker face and offered $80 cash "right now" and she immediately accepted. BAM!!

Nice score on the SK wrench metric set nine . In my experience I dont run across large sets like that in metric. 23 pieces of SuperKrome metric and only $50 to boot

You **** !

Jakemac, someone took that cool machine and destroyed any versatility it had. Was it you? Speak up you're among friends. I'll be cutting 19 inches out of a mark V this winter.
And that cast base is a great find 83glt. Need me some heavy bases.

Nope, not me. I'm not a ShopSmith kind of guy, but even I wouldn't butcher a machine like that unless it had suffered a horrific accident first. At least it still has some life in it.

Nine - Be careful where you store that 12-1/2" planer. I'd suggest keeping it on the other side of the shop from your 6-1/2" Craftsman. That Alien Head might eat the Delta for lunch in a jealous rage. Blade envy can be a crazy motivator. :lol_hitti

Oh ...... and that SK roll looks spiffy.

$5 Kennedy toolbox, rusty on the bottom but all drawers pull smooth as butter. I had to take all the junk in it, too. Guy wouldn't let me dump it out...
$5 old school Makita drill, seems to work fine. Might try replacing the battery just to see if I can get a little more speed out of it.

It hasn't been the best week since I had to give up a great day of sales for some emergency work, on top of some other things I've been dealing with but today all of that changed

On my way home I noticed a house with some abnormal activity in the front yard. I've always wanted to stop by there and poke around since the guy always has neat machinery outside

It seems he checked out and guys were hired to haul the "junk" away. How about bandsaws the size of my pickup truck bed? Walker turner drill presses? This guy had a treasure trove in the backyard and garage

Need a lathe? How about something with 4-10" of swing with 8' beds? Mills? I counted 7 in the back garage including a Bridgeport, Tree and a few other high end brands. I would of looked more but the piles of tooling made it almost impassable and I had to get home for something else.

The owner was out but the scrap guys allowed me to buy a few things. I paid 30.00 for all pictured but the vise isn't in this picture. How did I do?

I'm gonna head back tonight to make arrangements so I can hopefully shop tomorrow. If I get a chance, I'll take some pictures so everybody can see what I'm gonna walk into. :eyecrazy:

There are a lot of idiots out there like that. I have gone to numerous estate sales and inquired about tools only to be told, "we scrapped everything in the garage/shop, we dont know what its for and it was old".

Idiot families scrap thousands of dollars in tools and machinery for a few hundred bucks:mad:

BC: happy to hear you were able to save a few things from that old guy's shop and maybe a lot more when you stop by again tomorrow. i'm guessing you didn't overpay when you spent $20 for a 5 inch FPU vise, but if you think you did i'll double your investment and pay to ship it to me if you don't have any room in the museum.

ALL: too many other great finds to comment on so want to tell you all to keep up the good work and best of luck this weekend.

The scrap guys were taking the rusty stuff that sat outside for many years. All of the high end stuff will be auctioned off.

I finally spoke with the owner and she will allow me to come back tomorrow to hopefully do some more digging. I'm only gonna have a few hours at most so it's gonna be difficult. My first stop will be to excavate the 2 wooden toolboxes buried on the bench that are hopefully full of machine tools.

Next will be the 2 200hp electric motors sitting on the ground, if I can move them:D

Once I finish I will attempt to take pictures and make everybody's head explode.

drivesitfar,

I appreciate the offer but I'll keep this vise. I missed out on one a year ago and have been wanting one ever since.

Hopefully I'm given free reign tomorrow and will excavate more treasure from the workshop.

Sleep wil not come easy for me tonight:shocking:

Thanks guys, I only had a partial Metric set of Craftsman 20mm and below so this is a major score for me. I rarely run in to Metric in more than a few pieces at a time and never major name brands, everything at sales around here is SAE.

Jake, the alien head has nothing to worry about, that Delta was listed on CL immediately to cover my expenses and maybe make some money. Plus, I have another Delta exactly like it that I got for $20 last year but had to put a treadmill motor on it because the original motor was bad. Works for my rare needs.

Good score Crice, looks like we are neighbors

BC, you scored!! Can't wait to see the pics tomorrow!

KZ, they range from $381.99 at Tooltopia to $622.38 at Zoro :shocking:

http://www.tooltopia.com/sk-hand-to...scplp6828160&gclid=CM3v7ueY6cECFbA7MgodWTsAyg

http://www.zoro.com/i/G4436187/?utm...hopping_Feed&gclid=CLXYy-aY6cECFQyCaQodqBcAjA

I'm not a sports fan but if I had to pull for someone, it would be LSU and Dallas Cowboys so go Tigers, I guess!

We are stopping by the once-a-month flea market tomorrow and may hit a few sales, then there is the state auction as well so tomorrow should be busy.

Wow Big Caddy, look at those travel dials, I mounted them on my old Bridgeport when I could not afford a readout, and they are not cheap and that indicator mic sure brings back memories. Great find, just like the Golden pile I stumbled into that takes up all my extra time but I am not complaining. Wish I was there with ya.

I wish you were too. I could pick your brain on what everything is instead of trying to memorize an Enco catalog before tomorrow morning.

I'll do my best to get some good pictures prior to digging. It's a sight to behold with all of that machinery inside.
