Finally, today's score. With the sales getting fewer and further between, I had to go a little further, into the Big City. Estate sale run by a company with a name I hadn't heard before...Yet the folks running it looked familiar. Advertised tons and tons and tons of tools, plus a (early '80s?) Craftsman top-and-bottom toolbox set "filled with Craftsman tools". I never even looked at it-for the price they wanted, it had better have been filled with gold bars. :eyecrazy:
What I did by didn't come real cheap, but I got some really useful (if mundane) stuff for the garage that never made it to the "studio" for photography. I paid a total of $185 for everything, including what's not in the photos:

Craftsman 1/2" Drive socket set, SK long bit driver, KD brake tool.

Matco Metric and SAE DBE sets with rolls.

Craftsman 3/8"-1-1/4" combo wrench set in its roll. When I got home, I discovered that the owner had slipped in the next 3 smaller sizes, too. :rocker:

Finally, a Walden 1/4" drive socket set, with a few extra Craftsman goodies thrown in (the flex extension, u-joint, and 2 sockets at the bottom of the photo).

I'm already dreading the long, tool-free winter.

Thanks guys!

That middle drawer isn't lined with metal, the tray IS metal; Aluminum, bent in a U shape and tacked to the drawer front, with a wood back also tacked in.

It's about the right size for a drill index. No clue if it had an intended purpose.

That middle drawer is intended to hold a Machinery's Handbook.

But the real score was....(Drum roll entrance) .
A Gerstner Machinists box! Need cleaned and glued in a couple of places but for 25 bucks, I was not complaining, and VERY HAPPY!!!!

You people with your great scores on Gerstner's are really beginning to piss me off.

Outlaw : U **** on that alone. Never mind all the other treasures. Great score. Great price.

Estate Sale find from today. Saw the old Proto box in the corner with no price on it. Ask the guy and he says $20. $20 for the old Littlestown vise. $2 for the NOS grinding wheel. $2 for the Penens socket set with a few wrenches in it. 50cents each for the mini plier, the 4" adjustable and the can of lube. My wife asked only for a leaf blower for Christmas and picked up this really nice Toro for $10, so I am done shopping for her.

I hit a few estate sales today and did ok.

The first sale was really picked over - the only thing worth looking at was an old Buffalo Drill press but they wanted $200. Too much!

The next sale was a model train guy. The train stuff had been gone through but he had lots of tools around. I picked up an articulated Luxo magnifier lamp for $15.00. It works but needs to be gone through and cleaned up.

We hit a few more sales and then I found an older Kennedy machinist chest. I got it and some tools for $50.00. Not a great deal based on the overall condition and contents - but ok. It has the front panel but it's a bit battered.

The Luxo is already in pieces and I'm figuring out the parts list to bring it up to speed again.

Cheers

Jim

Thursday was a little lean, couple of estate sales and I was able to pick up a Luffkin rule, body dolly, Mac magnetic bit screwdriver, Craftsman drill gage, Bonney wrench and and one snap-on socket.

Much Better on Friday; Snap-on ball joint press I believe, Mac pulley puller set, Mac & Snap-on front end tools, Plomb & Proto wrenches, Snap-on 3/8 extension, nice pair of crimpers and come carbide lathe bits.

OUTLAW!!!!
25 clams for a gerstner model 52 is the **** of the week(if not the year)
hard to say from the pix, but it looks 60s to 70s.
and that odd drawer in the middle is for the machinists handbook.
IMG_5436_zpsf5c7b2a0.jpg

Thanks Beat, Coming from the Gerstner King, that means a lot! :D

You know I looked at that drawer after you posted, and thought "No way will it fit!" Damned if it didn't! and it was a 19th so while not new, not ancient either!

Thanks!

Only time for one sale this week, a local tool auction. After the bidding dust settled I ended up with one lot that contained these three levels. A plastic Stanley, a no name aluminum and this aluminum made by Pro Products with the neat little angle finder piece. All three for $10

Outlaw: that Gertsner box is nicer than either of mine and i didn't get them for $25. also if Beat is giving out a YS for a Gertsner and he has almost all the ones i've seen bought on the East coast i say you did well.

did the machinist book come with it or is that yours that has now found a new home. either way nice find on the Gertsner box.

That middle drawer is intended to hold a Machinery's Handbook.

You people with your great scores on Gerstner's are really beginning to piss me off.

Oh man you guys are killing it for real today!!!!

You **** OUTLAW!!

EDIT: Pete beat me.

Holy Cow! Everybody knew this except me!

And thanks again guys!

Beat gave a guess as to it's birth year, does anyone know if that tagged the Mfg date anywhere?

Drives, the pic with the book was Beat's, not mine. I was clueless! :dunno:

gerstner never date stamped their chests.
if you pull out the bottom drawer you should see the G&S stamp. it should also have a 52 to show the model.
there are also #s on the back of each drawer penciled but they are only assy #s to match up the drawers w/ the chest.
from the pix i'm gussing its 26" wide. if so than it is a model 52.
from the 3 pix you showed i'm still gonna say 60s or 70s but maybe lean more to the 70s.
does the emblem on the bottom drawer say 52?

So since I am new here let me give you a quick brief history. I have been lurking for awhile and haven't posted much. Been on the JJ for awhile and have found his to be a nice addition to my online browsing. I have known Beatcad for about 5 years or so, we met through the JJ and choppers. After seeing his collection of Gerstners I have been looking for one on CL and what not. No such luck yet but did come across a decent deal on a Kennedy and some nice tools today. Not a smoking deal but pretty good in my opinion.

I was thinking the same thing. I have had several MBC boxes that have pulls like this. This box is very heavy for its size and the drawers open so smooth. As far as age goes I was thinking soon after the Plomb days with the Streamlined lady on it. Or as my 12 year old son says it has "the naked lady badge on it"

Drake9:

The box looks to be in mint condition. Please tell us that you paid about $180.00 for the box and another $125.00 for the contents so we won't have to tell you that you ****.

Welcome to the insanity!

I gave $300 for everything. Guy bought the box new in mid 90's and it is in great condition. Pretty much all the tools are quality name brands, the micrometers are all Starrett but one, dial indicators are Brown and Sharpe BesTest.

You all got some killer deals today too.

That's good to hear! There's a guy who always has a Snap-On ****-O-Scope at the swap meets that never fails to make me smile.

You did pretty well today! 130 lbs of sockets for $80 sounds like a good deal!

I made another stop at the machine shop today. It's so nice to be able to make breakfast, walk outside to see if the person is home, then walk on down and start buying:evil:

I had 2 friends with me today and they were beyond thrilled to do some shopping. I had about an hour before I was called up for uncle duties but my buds stayed and shopped for the rest of the afternoon

Here is today's haul and more are coming

2 Hardinge 2A-D3 2J collet closers
Ridgid OOR ratchet hand threader with extra dies
Stanley grinder safety shield
Starrett hand held vise
Miller Falls bearing scrapers
Channellock 90 degree needle nose pliers
Snap on box end wrench with tubing handle
Jewelers rouge
Victor acetylene regulator
Mixed indicators, Mitutoyo and other USA brand
Starrett combo square, protractor and center finder
Whitney punch
Mini anvil

Yes it's basically 26"

Bottom Drawer emblem say's Model - 052

Inside on the bottom is says

Built By
65
H. Gerstner and sons etc.

It also has an "A" sort of overstamped on that.

Hmmm... an otherwise useless "65", and you think 60's/70's?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say 1965! ;)

I had seen the CL posting for the lathe when it had a price on it.

The guy didn't get any takers for a week or more.

I just happened to click on it when it came up again, but this time it was "Free"

They sold their house, and were moving out today. Realtor said everything must go today!

I dropped everything and jumped in the truck, even before he'd texted me an address.

Luckily it wasn't too far from my house.

There's a lot to figure out and assess prior to putting it back to work.

There are a few "Depression Era" fixes on it, and the wiring is terrible.

Overall, I'm pretty excited to take it on for my next project.

The workers signed and dated boxes if you look closely:
