Do the plate shieds keep the buffing debris out of the motor vents? I'm also planning on building a 2"x 72" belt sander, but may need a larger motor for that.

Yes, the shields help keep debris out of the motor, but they also get in the way unless your using 10" buffer pads, or longer arbor adaptors than I used ( I plan on buying better ones someday).

Check out post #2 in my Projects thread in my signature. It shows how I made the shields when I turned a similar 1750rpm motor into a wire wheel. I did the same thing on the polisher.

If the 3450rpm works for the sander you want to make, I think you'll find that the 3/4hp motor has plenty of torque and power for that project. These old motors are stronger than similar rated modern motors. That motor was built to handle the stress of running a table saw, so any other use you put it towards will be just as easy.

It's obviously been pretty dead around here but I decided to hit a shop and estate sale this morning.

These Borg and Warner cabinets are really pretty nice. They're bigger then they look in the images and they came full of NOS parts. (I have no idea what to do with the contents). $25/ea:

A $24 pile of asst. SO, MAC and Matco. That little Matco ratchet looks like a 1/4" but is actually a 3/8":

BP internal pipe wrench set ($5) and Matco lock pick kit ($3):

Old Morse tap and die set with some hard to find sizes ($15):

A lead casting furnace with some "get started" lead $15:

A jewelers brazing/welding torch set ($3):

Some respirators ($1/ea):

Only one estate sale worth going to this morning.

Some good stuff in the CL ad, but the shop was VERY sparse. It was too clean, it creeped me out when I stepped through the door. I was the 2nd one in the shop.

I saw the grinder in the ad, but figured that it would have a high price on it. When I showed up, I saw that it was tagged at $25. I flagged the pricing guy and yelled across the room MINE !. :D

I picked up a few small tools, and then took a look at the dust chute. It also had a $25 tag on it. When I went to cash out, I asked the guy how much. He says "$60 for all". So I give him my "I'm doin' the math" face, and while I'm staring at him, he says "Give me $50". :rocker:

I love it when they dicker themselves down. :D

So, Mr Grant got me :

- 1966 Craftsman 1/3hp 6" block grinder #397.19580 w/stand and manual (missing endcaps and eye shields)
- unknown Taiwan made portable Dust Chute on an adjustable stand
- sm unmarked caliper
- Craftsman (long C) Viscosimeter
- Wm Johnson Inc. (Newark, NJ) #8 rivit set

Someone else grabbed the 2 other stands with feed rollers on them. As I grabbed the dust chute that he left behind, he asked me what it was for. I told him, and as I walked away I heard a groan.
It made my day.

Davefr - Nice cabinets !

I had a cousin that bought a NAPA store from our uncle. He ended up with tons of obsolete parts and overstock. He put them on ebay and was able to clear out the back room by selling to Hotrodders and gearheads. The parts helped to pay for his kid to go to Machinists school.

Sell the parts and you may end up with the cabinets for free and maybe have some extra cash in the end.

Visiting my mom and stopped in a resale shop. Didn't have a lot of time to scrounge but came up with a few things. A green parts box. Diamond pliers, fuller scratch all and a proto thingamajig. Its stamped k41006 u.s. A.f proto. I haven't found anything on google yet but figure it can't be that uncommon. $3

And those cabinets a few posts up are pretty nice. I love those things.

Smokeshow, a few days late but those snap ring pliers look like the K-D #2011. I think it's the same as the Craftsman I have. They require two hands for holding and turning and are always fun to wrestle around with when I'm too lazy to grab fixed tip pliers.

Thanks! That is what I thought it was but wanted confirmation. I do not see kd anywhere marked on it but it has the kd feel so I am sure of it.

Dave, killing it as always!! Read what Jake said, +1!

Tellingthem, that Proto may be military related due to the USAF marking. I was thinking possibly a refrigeration tool when I saw the pic, then I read your post...:dunno:

Went back again today at my neighbors tool sale and ended up in a room that had never been opened before

It was stuffed with a ton of old power tool but there were plenty of gems buried in there as well

I hauled out

Jacobs rubber collet chuck
Hardinge 2J collet closer
Snap on tester but not sure for what. Couldn't find a model number
Jacobs rubber collets
Lion moulding shear
Monarch 10EE metric change gear set, in the plastic bags
Thin sheet metal roller. My dad has been wanting a small one so its his Christmas present
Lots of bridge city tools, all new in the box. These were in a small wood toolbox that was turned around and buried under junk
Not pictures is a mini lathe with 50 collets, more brand new Hardinge 2j collets in the tubes and some other assorted tools.

I was told there is a second warehouse full of stuff so I might go check that out sometime in the future:rocker:

Thanks Jake and Nine. I'll have to go thru all these parts and see if any of them are worth listing. Most are dist. caps, points, etc but I stumbled onto a few elect. ignition modules. Fortunately the BW catalog is still in the cabinets so I can reference what this stuff goes in.

I decided to go back one more time and found a few things I missed the first time.

A $12.50 pile:

Bridge city tools. These are pieces of art, not tools

BC. That's a potential You **** if the price was right.

I was told there is a second warehouse full of stuff so I might go check that out sometime in the future.

Based on what you found, I'd schedule "sometime in the future" to be later on tonight!!

There are car restorers who may need those parts to get their hoopty running again. Don't dismiss them just because the new cars have computers in them.

OK, zero yard sales (the weather is proving the weather guessers dead wrong about rain this fall...) But the HS Flea opened about 3 hours late despite early AM rains. So I found the P&C 3/8 drive bit for a buck, and the rest from a guy that is typically up in the silly $$ regions, but those were all for $3. All Plvmb, except the Giller obstruction DBE. I guess it pays to repeatedly drop items that are too high...

One sale today was a CL ad for a Snap On toolbox for $250. I wasn't sure if it was even real at first.
Posting for a friend,text only,yadda yadda yadda.

So I called my tool buddy Adam who is always up for picking and we head to the east side.As we leave my place I still don't have an exact address/contact with the actual seller, but hey gas is down to $2.60/gallon and ad sounds good.

Finally get an address and we show up to find this::rocker:
002.JPG

I find out all 4 locks operate with one included key:willy_nil
There is a bunch of tools in it but seller was planning to sell that separate so we have to go thru the box and sort stuff out. He wants to keep some small stuff,1/4" drive Craftsman etc but sells us all the rest of what we pick thru for another $100 total between what me and Adam have grabbed out.
Adam has done a quick check and his tools retail are in the $1600 range when new.
I'll get some pics tomorrow of my portion of the tool haul.
I didn't realize how heavy these boxes are and I'm glad Adam was around to help.
I have a couple feelers out to folks who know I buy and sell that have been looking for a toolbox so this could be a quick flip.

I had a big load today, though mostly non-tool related...
6 steamer trunks
6 old lamps
3 brown jugs
2 old metal lunch boxes
a few wrenches
and a bunch of other stuff.... $150 total, and somehow got it all in my magnum.

Pics!

Two cleaned up for the FM in the AM, cleaned 4 for a friend of mine to sell for me.

Now that's a load Rick, you should do well!

Nothing interesting real close for me today so we took the day off. On the way home from grocery shopping a minute ago, we see this on the curb down block so after dropping off the groceries, I scooped it all up. There are 2 weedeaters, a chair, two crappy night stands but they are solid wood(not particle board) so they should repurpose well, a half sheet of AC plywood, half sheet in pieces of 1/4" luan and what made me come back originally, the 8 salesman sample windows!!! I was wanting a window in my divider wall and now I have several to choose from. :D

It's all locked up so we would be the only ones in there when it opens up

As for the price, I had to shell out 95.00 for the whole pile

Does anybody know what the snap on gauge set is for?

Nice freebee score there. I need to move to a better neighborhood where people actually put out stuff that's good. :dunno:

almost too good to be true. just about everything in these 2 pics were 2 for a dollar, minus the snap on hard handle, which was 20, and the external tooth thorsen that was a dollar. it still has a shield on it. i never knew they came with one. LOL. all the ones i have ever seen show teeth. new dewalt chipping hammer with drill and hammer drill 30.00
new armstrong 6" 3/8 new proto 1/2 extension. servistar box with tray. a crazy weird looking husky taiwan ratchet. its extendable and also is flex with locking feature. appears to be fine tooth. :)

the items in the second picture, i have zero clue what they are, but couldnt pass them up for the price, obviously. biggest set of retaining ring pliers ive ever seen.

all the yellow handle goodies are xcelite. mac and matco drivers. wizard allen keys. proto adjustable spanner wrench. flying v cman ratchet. lot of cool stuff for pennies.

That Snap On tool with the knob in the second picture looks like a rocker arm adjusting tool for vintage engines.

Alinc ***** as usual!

and Stage, you do too! I have those giant snap rings in both inside and outside, versions, and at that price you only need them once to be paid for! That ratcheting crimper is probably worth more than the SO HH!

I am in AZ for the winter and went to a swap meet yesterday and found several
of the "flying V" type Cman ratchets for sale. I don't know what they are worth but if anyone is interested let me know and I will see what I can do for you. I myself do not collect them

I've been going to the flea market almost every week but barely post it here. Here are this week and past weeks finds. First is 2 craftsman sockets and an sk. Williams wrench deep offset double box and a crafts raised panel. And some small Klein cutters.total of 8 dollars. Second is set off punches never heard of the brand but seemed like good quality and for 5 bucks you can't go wrong. Another pair of Klein cutters. And some duck bills.
