2014 New Years Scrounging Resolutions

With the 2013 garage sale/yard sale/estate sale/flea market/etc season officially over, what "not found" items are still on your search lists ? And what will you be searching for in the coming year ?


My 2014 search list includes :

an Arbor Press (an old Dake would be nice)
a 1/3 or 1/2 hp early style Block Grinder
2 Craftsman cast iron grinder pedestals
a bandsaw pedestal of the same style
2 Craftsman 115.6962 1/2hp motors (for wire wheels and polisher)
a full Craftsman 3/4dr =V= series socket set and driver (for $100 or under )
and possibly a vintage tool chest or two


So, what have you resolved to find this year ?

Inventory my craftsman set and replace any missing items.
A garage heater (perma install)

The next cheap nice condition Kennedy machinist chest is not going to slip out of my hands.
Hazet, Stahlwille, and SK as well as Snapon never goes off my list.
Utica, Kreuter, Proto, same.
A nice old but not ancient floor jack ideally leaking and totally non functional, but not rusted.

Sorta sympathize with this post!

This thread question, and when someone earlier asked to "say what your best deal of the years was", makes my head hurt to think about.

I'm at that point where I have most all the things I REALLY want in my shop but I'm also always looking to upgrade, improve, or fill holes in certain areas where I may have gaps in a brand or the like.

For me it's partly the thrill of the hunt, and partly finding those upgrades or "nice to haves", or in some cases, something I know will make the future job requiring that special tool easier. I also just like to see some of the differences between this or that, and once in a while I'l buy a tool just to ID it was for!

A lot of it is like visiting a semi historical living museum to see some of the things I see while "scrounging". Just looking at some of the things other people have out there is fun.

I'm also watching if not actively looking for those odd bits and pieces to various projects, for the shop, for camping, for the house, whatever... Its not always about tools for me. And then I also dabble occasionally in buying to resell, and that has paid for the habit for several years now. I don't draw an "allowance" from our household funds to go buy this stuff. (in fact the shed project in my sig was "financed" by selling my old Ranchero and a few other items...)

So what am I "scrounging" for???? Whatever catches my eye...

Sparta tools is my new one. Craftsman USA, sk, anything that catches my eye. Advertising or promotional items as well. I love that kind of stuff

I always wondered what outlawman did with all his yard sale tools, I always look forwards to his answer to my what is this questions. I so enjoy going to the auctions or sales and finding a box of stuff to figure out what I have...Thanks to all who helped me out in 2013 Richie

- older cman grinder pedestals would be awesome
- 50's style cman or delta drill press and belt sander.

Similar to what others have said, spend less time looking for tools and more time using what I have!

im really hoping i finally pull the trigger on a Mittler Bros power drive bead roller+ a few dies. i was emailing back and forth with them over the summer but had a few things come up and that money had to go elsewhere

-miller plasma cutter has been on the list for a bit now, but i might be going for an intercompany ITW visit this spring so i might hold off until then to see if i can do some sweet talking for a special friend price.

and not exactly tool related, but early 40's chevy 2dr slant back, but i'll settle for a buick/pontiac/oldsmobile . another thing i was looking for over the summer but didnt find "the one"

I agree with your logic.

My list includes a lathe, anvil and a table for yet to be picked up Powermatic bandsaw. Of course any older US hand tool that I come across, no matter that I have five, ten or whatever at home already.

Also want to finish off my impact sets and 1/2" drive deep craftsman sockets.

I get more out of digging at the estate sales and general sales than what I actually buy. My best deals was finding items in a box they didn't even know was there, along with "what about the vice bolted to the bench" it amazing the people that want the bench but not the vice.
