Well it just so happened to work out that way, not by plan. Finally I am able to build the garage of my dreams, a 36 x 56 x 14. In my township a garage can not be any larger than 1500 sq ft so my initial thoughts were of doing a 30 x 50. I saw a member here who built a 36 x 56 and really loved the layout he chose. I talked to my buddies dad who drew up the plans and he was confident that we could build larger if we tore down the existing poor condition "tractor shed" and dog kennel and use those sq ft to add on to the 1500. That is the direction we went, only we hit a snag in that the added sq ft was 24 shy of the 2016 for the 36 x 56... I turned everything in anyway and the zoning department says no go, garage can not be larger than 1500 sq ft... but if you call it a barn you are okay. Garage got crossed out and barn was penned in and the approval went through.

On to the details of the building. It will be a DIY pole barns building built mostly by their preferred contractor of the area (central NJ), i will finish things out. 36 wide x 56 deep gable end being the 36. an 18 x 12 and a 12 x 12 overhead door on the 36 foot wall. The plan is to have it heated and cooled so good insulation is a must. I am leaning towards a heated 6" slab and a couple mini splits for the a/c. It will be used for many different things, not any one thing in particular. I will be working with the power company again shortly, I am trying to get everyone to be on board with putting in 400 amp service dedicated to the building. I went to the township today to get a couple questions answered before ordering the engineered drawings. The excavation company I am using has come out to talk about what is needed and they want to get some things done before winter sets in. The project includes a new teardrop shaped turn around driveway about 300' long as well as leveling off the pad. by the slope of my land they are figuring 60 loads of fill will need to be brought in, luckily they are building lots by me so that will be free as well as millings for the driveway. I am sure I am missing a lot but I will be updating as things come along. Actual construction of the building won't begin until spring/summer but hopefully there will be some good progress up until then.

I should add that i've been waiting my whole life for a garage... I was always big into cars and all kinds of "toys" but never had a garage. I bought this house (first house) a year and a half ago with the intent of building exactly what i wanted vs a compromise of an existing one. I am really looking forward to building a hot rod out of the 55 chevy that my father left me before he passed away. This next year should be a lot of fun and also hell on my wallet haha.

Sounds like a plan! Mine is 32x56 and seems very adequate for 4+ cars.

Oh, and a 55 Chevy is a good reason to build!

I thought you were talking about me. :eyecrazy: My dimensions exactly, only I'm putting the doors (same dimensions as yours) on the 56' side and will also be scheduled for a spring build. Looking forward to your build pics.

Okay, so its been a little while and i guess i should update. I decided to have pioneer pole buildings do the building instead. The specs on it are the same, 36x56 with 14ft wall but i went with trusses that are 4/12 outside and 2/12 inside 2ft on center. I decided against doing a heated slab and am having a new gas line ran to my house to do a radiant heater. I now have all the permits and we started on the dirt work. Lots and lots of dirt work. As of the last picture that is 42 tri axle loads of fill.

Before the stripping started there was a constant wet spot in the yard, i dug at it and found the end of the drain that they ripped out when putting in the new septic. 100ft of schedule 80 pipe ($$$) to carry it away and no more wet spot.

Catalpa tree that looked so cool but was in the way of the new driveway. Had i not cut it back it would have fallen over this year. I used to be able to ride the mower under that branch.
