Late to the party with my + 1!

Outlaw:

Like others have said, that New Process drill bit holder is great.

Looks like they started around 1880, but not sure when the company ended production.

Mike

Thanks Lugz and Mike!

Mike, looks like we found the same reference:

New Process Twist Drill Company is a Massachusetts Domestic Profit Corporation filed on December 1, 1888. The company's filing status is listed as Involuntary Dissolution and its File Number is 041667210. The company's principal address is (was) 34 Court St, Taunton, MA 02780.

Address is now a parking lot. It once was "riverfront" property, but I think that is now under ground?

Thanks Bill. I think this one gets the Etank, and a place of honor on my little indoor workbench. I'll keep it bare metal I think.

Thumbnails attached of the antique "VLCHEK" special combo wrench.

Matches the branding on this "VLCHEK" flat head valve lifter I found earlier this year, which dates to 1915.

Lugs, that Vlchek combo wrench is just like the one Ford put in the standard tool kit with each car. The open end is for spark plugs and the box end is for head nuts. The size of the open end determines which year car it fit. Earlier cars had a bigger hex on the spark plugs, hence a larger open end.

I have been lurking all around GJ and came across this thread looking up a thrift store find and ended up skimming the whole thread from start to finish. I wanted to post today's finds from a garage/tool only family run estate sale today. I'll list out what my bundled $30 took home. I spent a few hours figuring out what I could about many of them, but perhaps folks here can enlighten me where I've fallen short. If anybody wants better detailed pics of anything or any questions at all about these please let me know.

Arcturus Mfg Corp 41-W-1008-10. ⅝ and ¾+
Armstrong 27A DOE 9/16 and ⅝
Armstrong 672 Slightly Offset DOE ⅜ and 7/16
Coes Monkey Wrench 10-⅛ long (MFG Under L COES pat2 Steel)
Dunlap Pipe Wrench 14 inch (12 inch closed) Germany
Ford M 01A-17017B Offset DBE (Moore Forge) 1940-1948 Model A Head Nut and Spark Plug
Hinsdale HD5 Slight offset round DBE 13/16 and ⅞ 1933 to late 1930s
Indestro Economy Combo ⅞ and ¾ pointed oval panel Select Steel Made in USA not Chicago

??? Rusty ????? DOE ¾ and 13/16 Hexagon C stamped
??? Rusty ???? (BU[HN][LE] stamped into handle) DOE ¾ and 15/16
??? Gas Burner Plier no markings found

Honestly some of the rusty pieces are for me to experiment with electro-un-rust-plating steel. I have not yet come to a conclusion if taking the rust off tools is better or if it is cherished 'patina' like on other vintage items.

I'll gather up some of my thrift store and garage sale finds into another post. I normally just buy what I would use or find interesting. But this thread has inflicted me with a disease...I mean new hobby

Happy Hunting Everybody.

Kevin.

lugz must have been Vlchek day, I picked up one of their all steel screwdrivers.

Today was a pretty good day at the flea. There was a vendor with a lot of tools selling things for $1 and less.

I pieced this Kraeuter set of single offset ends together. They were mixed around. First found 2, then another,etc.. Found the last two under a stack of jeans. That's always fun. Still missing a few pieces but this is all he had.

Pics of other stuff tomorrow hopefully.

Welcome aboard ktkawaguchi. I live in Fresno for about a year and a half but didn't have a shop for all my goodies now, I'm sure you'll find plenty of good sales to build your toolset out there.

I guess I don't need this extra hour of sleep tonight. How's about some eyecandy for anyone else with this problem.... here's my $2 buy from an estate sale yesterday. Most items came from the free pile except for the 2 Starrett Calipers and the Harold O. Baker machinist vise.....

The Arcturus is from WWII. That's an early Federal Stock Number. Nobody has ever seen any other Arcturus tool or any DOE wrench without an FSN. Conclusion is they formed to take advantage of wartime contracts.

The Indestros are from an auto-kit, kept together with a thumbnut through the middle. Not common. Not rare, but not common in my experience. I see plenty of J.P. Danielson and unbranded. EDIT: GJ member four.cycle may have a different assessment.

In my experience in live auctions, and in other exchanges with peer collectors, rust is never considered a patina on antique or vintage steel or iron tools. Brass, copper and other metals oxidize differently, and more aesthetically pleasing when unchecked. You'll never see a crust of rust on a rare tool sold in a serious auction.

Kevin: welcome! This thread (and it's annual predecessors) had been responsible for increasing the localized gravity fields at many GJ garages as we accumulate more stuff from sales and garages. The challenge is keeping our places from becoming like some of the unorganized hoards that we pick!

3bay: cool set of Krauters. Could you post some closer in shots of wrench shape and labeling on the DBE thread? I'm a sucker for single offset double box ends.

Poppinjohnnies, Like the items you got today, especially the Delta band saw.

3Bay, wrenches you got were worth the effort. Good find in the jeans section!!!

Mr. P--Can you imagine the work it took to put owner name into that vise?

Outlaw: Not a lot of info could be located on New Process.

BTW, you probably are like me, I have a lot of clocks that are easier to just unplug and plug back in later when the "right " time rolls around after the "fall back" time change.

Thank you very much! I was curious about the Arcturus since the most solid reference I came across was in a Willys Jeep forum. Maybe this wrench will get united with a WWII tool box. I added DOE and early FSN to my documentation.

I'm glad to hear your perspective on rust not being a patina. Personally I think of it more like damage especially when associated with cast iron or carbon steel cookware. I figure tools are in the same ball park as heirloom cast iron (depending on your views/priorities). I didn't want to be "that guy" who ruined a piece by cleaning it up.

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome and sense of community.

Kevin.

It depends on HOW you clean up the rust. Abrasives are to be avoided, heavy wire wheel marks don't add to anything, nor does sand blast marks or sanding...

This is one reason E-tanks are so popular. Nothing gets removed but rust... Not the only way to go, but does the job non destructively. Phosphoric acid can also help but not if plating is involved, (Same with an E-tank don't do plated parts...). Evaporust is well thought of, generally, al have a place. Citric acid, Vinegar, Molasses, its a long list of possibilities...

Two stops today. An estate sale that was a bust, and a commercial contractor liquidating a three generation business.

The contractor's shop had some great stuff. Everything from sockets to the forklift was up for sale. Unfortunately, despite the CL ad stating that they wanted to clear everything out, the prices didn't reflect that ($5ea for craftsman G code sockets with owners marks heavily engraved). I quickly became afraid of asking about the prices on the unmarked stuff after seeing what they were asking for clapped out machinery that had been tagged.

I walked out with two NOS 12" saw blades. The only reason I paid their price was because they had never been used, and I had been carrying them around the site while I looked at everything else on the property. No screaming deals here.

Craftsman Kromedge 9-32499 72T 1" arbor (w/insert) combo blade $20
Delta 35-657 60T carbide combo blade $40

100_2668.jpg

$60 total.

So many things I had to pass on. Including small Knack boxes, wall cabinets (one was a SnapOn), a severely abused Wilton bullet, etc.

Yeah, it's a disease.

It's fun to look back at the GS threads. Time consuming too. I went through one a while back, mostly looking at pictures, and split it up in two parts. If you really want to have fun, read some of the comments. Some funny stuff mixed in there.

Yeah, 2012 was the year Jeff initiated the GS threads.

The instigator.

That's odd. The Model A version had a large plug wrench for the 7/8" plugs and the early V8 wrench was for 18 mm plugs. There was a version for the V8-60 that used 14 mm plugs.
Pete,
Did you see the wrench in question? It's not a Ford-marked wrench. When I posted it earlier, mixed in with the rest of the haul, I said it looked Ford-ish to me. And Provincial confirmed. But it's not marked with anything but "VLCHEK". I posted thumbnails in this thread. The open end is 15/16" and the hex opening is 5/8".

EDIT: AA has a similar wrench, which they attribute to the Model T. Their example has a non-detachable socket forged on the end, not a 6-point box end. Same opening sizes.
