POST THAT ****!
I don't care if it's tool related or not, it's how and where you found it, why got you out of bed and what made you decide to buy it that I like to see.

I wouldn't have bought the sea shell picture many pages back but I also wouldn't have bought the 48" pipe wrench either, I just like the pics and stories attached to them.

Ok, I may have lied a lil, it depends on the price of the sea shell pic and pipe wrench, I might would have bought them but I'm a tightwad... :lol_hitti

I would guess everyone here is a tightwad Nines, its part of the love of the thread.
I'm not a tightwad. I'm a cheap *******. View media item 41922I don't really know the difference, but I wear the mantle proudly . :D

So I didnt acquire the amazing deal I saw at a Radioshack that was closing near my house but hopefully I give a heads up to any of you guys looking for amazing parts storage.

The Radioshack was selling 8 of their small parts storage cabinets for $150 for 8 cabinets, the ones that hold all the electronic components (resistors, swtiches, etc) and made of steel with ball bearing slides and dividers. I missed that deal by a day :(

Oooo... Yeah I've dug through those drawers many a time over the decades for all my little electronics projects... Would love to have those for my garage.

Wow, so many great finds and stories, but Dave, Dave, Dave; an aluminum WM for three bucks? U **** more than a little!

Today I got nuthin. Never even left the house, (I did finish putting away all the stuff from the Proto box, and got the No. ready for Waterloo to go for the clips...)

Tomorrow I have to go back to work (sick almost 2 weeks and took the last two days of last week off just because...), as we will have a planned power outage for much of tomorrow... If this cough would go away, I'd be all good...

Great haul on the S-K, Outlaw. With all that goodness, where's the ratchet?

Chopper, I've been asking myself that since I got it all home... Not a single ratchet in the box (one Allan 3/8 breakers was as close as it got) and I never saw one in the work shop! :headscrat Yet there were 1/4, 3/8 AND 1/2" drive sockets! as well as 3/8 & 1/2 extensions... :wtf: :dunno:

I'm guessing the SIL may have pinched those long before...

okay after hearing the views and opinions, i have to agree with outlaw, drive and the rest of the garagejournal community

At the start all i could see was nice small deals, and then a sudden large bulk purchase, and then more nice small picks

but now can see its not the stuff that is bought but the trill and excitement of the hunt and that all purchases great and small from a huge factory to a single screw deserve to be here.

thanks opening my mind and happy picking,

I don't post much, but I love to browse the garage sale finds and see what people are getting, from the single piece to the mega scores. I go a fair amount when I'm not working, and the hunt is really my hobby now. They don't happen too often, but once in a while I fall into a mega score for a ridiculously low price. I've outfitted my whole shop for pennies on the dollar.

Sometimes it's a smoking deal, sometimes it's just a good deal and something I want to have on hand in case I need it, like the 48" pipe wrench. Plus, I've got the 36" aluminum pipe wrench, and thought the 48" would look cool hanging next to it, even it I never use it.

I've got a whole garage self sustaining ecosystem going. I buy cheap, keep what I want, sell what I don't, buy more stuff I want and don't want, sell more, buy more. Most everything in my garage is the result of flipping deals. My wife just rolls her eyes when I pull in the driveway with another load of ****. "I better not see any of that **** make its way into the house" I love junking. It's the hobby that with a little work and know how, really pays for itself.

Hit three sales yesterday, only one produced.

16" x 1/4" Stanley screwdriver, 0.50
9" Mayhew punch $1
Blue Point 6-amp 1/2" drill $21
Kennedy 20" box $30

The drill runs smooth as silk, with Jacobs chuck and #3 key. I've wanted a quality drill of this size for a while, and happy to find this one. I initially looked past the Kennedy box (I have a brown 520), but a closer look showed it with very good paint, no rust, and a USAAF stamp that I concluded was United States Army Air Force. So an old-school design, green color, and the military connection just made me unable to leave it there. Damn this disease.

That makes sense, my ocd would not let me pass it up either.

Just so you know, I was not calling you guys out, just pointing out the variance from one end of the spectrum to the other. I enjoy all posts and look forward to hearing the reason behind the purchase. I often pick things up for friends and family that I would not buy for myself, I have also bought things because I have a couple and more the merrier... Keep posting guys!

Not really garage sale, but a Goodwill find by my lovely bride. She bought this Bretford charging or AV stand for $20. It has 4 receptacles mounted underneath the work area. She thought it would be a neat work table or computer desk for the garage.

Today we went to a mid century furniture resale shop that is only open on weekends. We didn't find anything but there was a huge yard sale/flea market across the street.
I purchased this early socket set for $10. Only markings are Made in USA and the socket size. After I get everything cleaned up, I'll post better pictures and ask for assistance with the ID. I then found a 10" Diamond adjustable wrench for $2. It is pretty rusty and it is currently taking a vinegar bath.

Bill, nice finds on the big drill and the 620 box! I will suggest replacing that pipe handle with one about 4 feet long, and in use make sure it has a positive (non-human) stop!

Good to see everybody making some good scores. Hit a couple sales this weekend but brought nothing home.
You know when the prices are higher than eBay....there just too damn high. I did get a good lead on a flea market I haven't been to yet. So maybe something next weekend...Cheers.

$3 for a Workmate, in perfect shape to boot. Nice!

I'm going to throw out a big YOU **** to Outlaw on that Proto/SK score, $25, good grief, what a score.

I was out again ******* off the local residents holding yard sales with my cheapness and scored this Ridgid 848 48" aluminium pipe wrench for $45. Tried to get the guy lower, but he was not budging. Jaw teeth are nice and sharp, no damage. Not too shabby.

Speaking as a Pipefitter, when you had to go and get the 48" wrenches, your day was starting to ****.....

I can't seem to find a current list of closings. I know there is one in town, I might have to swing by tomorrow and see what the story is... Seems like some recent news the past couple days talks about RS going belly up again...

So this was the haul this weekend. Hit up two Estate Sales, on the other side of town from me. Wife had a project to work on, so I loaded up my 3yo and off we went.

First sale was a private one, and they guy had so many odds/ends/parts laying around, I am sure I missed stuff only being able to get there Saturday. Find a slighly roached Mighty Tonka pressed steel crane thing for him (2930), missing the front cab, and decent rust, but he enjoys it, $5. Then I see this older DP laying abandoned in the corner, and give it a once over. Find the Sears tag after loosening the table and banging on it a few times with my hand. 101.*** so Atlas, pre 40's era. Looks to be Companion. Haul it out and ask the lady how much. She doesn't really know what it is, so I explain how Dunlap was Sears lower brand than Craftsman? This is older than the Dunlap brand. $5 and it is mine. Once I got home, unstuck everything, and either going to part it out, or put a few hours in paint and wire-wheel and re-sell with an old GE motor (will have a restore thread on it soon). Then we have to go down the slide a few times because it was next to a park before we can go to the other sale.

Get over there, had to search for the way into the garage (go out to back yard, then entrance). Looks decently picked over, but start digging. My son has a plastic toolbox full of my spares, and I spotted this 2 drawer carry box for $5. Asked him if he wants a "real" toolbox like daddy, says yes.
Any idea on brand? Think it was Waterloo made due to the date stamp in top left, like my larger tops. Start dumping all the other stuff out and stocking it with things I was wanting. Overall was about another $5 in tools. The long blue handled one is a Cornwell bit holder, the red box is a snap-on with spots for a 1/4" drive, SO socket inside, forgot to take out the Mac long flathead in the box. The 3/8 extension is CM -G-. Also found a craftsman branded chuck =CM=. The Craftsman pipe wrench has the remainder of the sticker left, but has a curve both ways (cheater bar perhaps?). Cutters are Proto, other pliers are no-name. Found a couple LP's there as well.

Last stop was a couple blocks over from the sale, found a set of Project Source flush-mounted lights to replace the cheap brass builder grade ones. Nothing too fancy, but for $5, cant complain. Also got my wife a set of small thread scissors for $1.

Overall, not nearly the haul from the week before, but I also didn't spend over $100. Week before went like this:
Sunbeam plastic shed $15
8" Blade Patterned Steel Knife $5
Magnetic Screwdriver/Plier/Bit Holders x6 $18
Benjamin 3120 .22 cal air rifle $18
Craftsman Dovetail Jig $28
Thin dress leather $4
Large bundle of exotic wood (twice as big as two-hands span) with Maple, Purpleheart, Osage, and all other kinds $7
T Slot hold downs $2
Knife Sharpening DVD (for s&g) $2
Huge box of shop rags $Free
Spiderman cereal bowls -50c

And I am sure I am forgetting stuff. We were there Friday at open, but didn't realize the garage wasn't the shop until about 5-10min in. But still scored big. Most of last week's is away, but can get pictures of anything people want.

Appreciate the advice. It's definitely one of those tools to be respected. It's 550 rpm and the trigger has a strong return spring. Growing up, Dad (a drywall contractor) always had a drill of this power for mixing sheet rock mud, but that's definitely different from drilling wood, stone, or metal.

BTW, you **** royally on that Proto/SK find. I'm a little surprised you spotted it, since it wasn't a tackle box. :lol_hitti

And Dave, you **** too on that first-generation Workmate. It looks so clean and complete. Three bucks? Are you shIIIII me?

Yes, it is a Waterloo. It was sold by them through auto stores (I think) under the "All American" brand in the early 70's. It would have had an oval paper decal on the front with an Eagle, the brand, and a model number that started with "AA -" and a number. Don't know the model number, there is almost no info out there to do research with.

Nothing better than free! This was on a street in town with the trash. This Craftsman jointer is a blue badge 1930's era one. Missing the blade and belt guards and the fence knob. The stand is an original Craftsman from the catalog I looked at, it's been welded to prevent vibration from loosening it up.

Thanks for the lead. I think I may have figured it out in more detail, based on the information. I struck out with the All-American side, as the only ones I saw had a different handle (ran all the way across like the grey/red CM, but without chrome). They also were missing the lock hasp on the front/center, only having the two swing latches on the side. But from there, and getting creative with what I added in search terms led me to This Sale On Etsy. Almost a perfect match, and now I know what it would have been. I have reason to believe it started out as a JL-99, only in red vs the turquoise it was normally. But considering my son wanted it blue, I will repaint, and add the original decals. The Waterloo I can pull from the catalog page, and just add the model no. Anyone know were to find a warning label like that?

I hit a few sales Saturday.

Pic 1. First one advertised tools but not much there, they said the next one in April. Picked up a few plastic toolboxes and a candy vending machine, spent about $14.

Pic 2. Next one was a bust but found a TOO nearby and picked up this Jack Daniels Maxwell House decanter for $25.

Went back to the guy's sale who is moving to Alaska. Spent $60 total.

Pic 3: Wizard 1/2"D sockets and ratchet, Penncraft 3/8"D ratchet, Craftsman ratchet and Crown label saw blade, Skokie made in Japan 4" adjustable, old Crescent adjustable, 3 Proto yellow handle screwdrivers in nice shape, 3 old logo Husky 1/2"D sockets, Klein folding ruler, Allway Saw by Ultra Mfg Co. N.Y.C. , 2 cans of R12, old tool box tray and a K-D drum brake measuring caliper.

Pic 2. A box of old NOS Perfect model aircraft fuel tanks, an old Coca Cola clock that works and a free broken Coca Cola clock.

I then went and checked out a guys private museum / vintage store. Old tools, railroad, grocery store items. Had a good day!

Nice Job. I find the older Kromedge blades to leave a nice finish and easier to find with the correct tooth angle for a RAS than new stuff. And back then, the packaging helped to sell the product, so had a bit more on it.

Someone say Kromedge? I got these 3 recently with an old CMan RAS I bought... They might look well used but still extremely sharp. :)

Great Thread.

I hit up a local yard sale and got a cooler full of electrical supplies including at least one bag of the waterproof wirenuts and multiple electrical boxes. $15

Then headed to a local 4H yard sale and got a set of 4 rigid 18v lithium ion tools for $40. On the lookout for the 4.0ah batteries now.

Then headed to an auction for a truss company who used to build little buildings and houses as well. Owner passed away so they were selling everything. Wish I had a way to transport more and more $$ to spend. Tons of stuff including well over 20 different bundles of wood. I ended up with a lot of Trusses for $45, go cart motor for $27, large triple bowl industrial kitchen sink with 2 faucets for $90 and a set of 6 attic trusses for $210. I'm planning a pole barn so I'm hoping to work the trusses into that. The lot of trusses ended up being 2 trailer and 2 truck loads. I honestly could have built the pole barn with those but didn't realize what all it was until I started loading it.

Wish I could remember what thread it was, but someone was wondering what happened to all the oil can spouts from the days of steel oil cans. I spotted these at a Sunday firehall flea market and snapped a pic. Two had different patented designs and two were cheapos. I didn't ask the price.
The food bar was wafting a savory sage aroma, and I overheard one patron claim this firehall is famous for its stuffing, so I had to see for myself. Now I'm not judging, and there's no accounting for comfort food (think, kiviak). I thought it did have a nice browned crust, but the patron ahead of me in line didn't want any of that, just the gooey stuff underneath. I decided I didn't really have to try it after seeing it, as I have tasted similar-looking goo elsewhere. Maybe I missed an opportunity to expand my epicurean horizons, but I ordered a egg-sausage-cheese on english muffin, and it really hit the spot.
I am really looking forward to the April opening of my favorite flea market. There's a food shack there that serves some tastey sliced fried potatoes - mmmm! What's YOUR go-to breakfast for those early morning sales?

Bluebolt: Can't beat free!

I responded to a Craigslist ad today for miscellaneous chain and tools for $10. For that $10, I got the miscellaneous chain, a small casting net, an old come along, even older bolt cutters, and a huge 32" long Snap On 3/4" drive ratchet. It was gummed up but after cleaning it works perfectly fine.

Nice Job. I find the older Kromedge blades to leave a nice finish and easier to find with the correct tooth angle for a RAS than new stuff. And back then, the packaging helped to sell the product, so had a bit more on it.
I didn't realize radial arm saws required different blades than any other circular saws. How are they different?
