A closer look at the SnapOn and Berry's.

SnapOn :
I rubbed a grease pencil across the lettering and gently wiped it off with Acetone to make the letters readable.

Nice finds guys!

As expected, a slow day for the 4th WE.

lots advertised (even after flagging a fair number), few worth stopping for, fewer still with pay dirt.

Three free ropes, look to be in new or near new condition. Est 40-50 ft each. Elsewhere I picked up the Coleman Aluminum Stove/Cooler stand for five.

attachment.php

$2 for the Vlchek 8 oz. BP hammer, the two small sockets are SO and Long C Craftsman, and the "wing nut" is a Coleman stove off side burner valve. A buck for all three.

The screws and inserts (metric...) cap, (7/8) DOE, 2 Plvmb, 1 SK, and the rest unknown sockets all came to $3 (I had to get all 7 sockets as they were ty-wrapped together... WHY do people do this with random $#!+?)

Same place as the rope I picked up an old 1918 Sheet-metal book for a Quarter.

They do that so people like us will chomp on the bait and clear out their trash instead of cherry picking and leaving the junk behind.

I did the same thing last week. Paid $15 for 17 sockets. Threw half of them in my junk bin and kept the Cornwell's.

Bagged: I don't know what the light was mounted to, if they ever were. I've never seen that type mounted to any tool. I'm convinced it was sold as a 'shop light.' Nice that you found one with the guard intact.

Now we need to know what you paid for it. I found mine at an estate sale for $18.

I went back out to a late starting estate sale and found this Mini Lenk Blowtorch. The valve screw is stuck so I'm trying to get some penetrating oil into the valve... (That's why the pic is on it's side

It's an alcohol burner and I got the valve body out and back in the can already, and the wick seems OK.

Bagged, you **** on that light! I've seen them mounted on various machines, like mills, drill presses, etc.. I recently picked one up and paid $40 for it for my drill press. It's made by Fostoria, they bring a decent buck on ebay. Nice pickup for sure, congrats!

My town always does a 4th of july flea market/community wide garage sales/junk show. ... Often its way overpriced junk/treasure and fun to look at but seems the auctions are much better way to find deals. In fact i saw a few folks selling the same stuff they got at auctions over the past year for 200% markup or better.

But when driving past yard sales i saw a full table of bright green ryobi power tools from the road. I had to stop and get a better look. Had several drills, impacts, palm sander and then two items that caught my eye, a buffer and a cailk gun. I already have some ryobi 18v batts anyways (really prefer my dewalts tho) but i figured what the heck.

Talked him down from 50 to 30 for the pair so $15 a peice. He didn't have a chrged batt to test them tho so i was nervous.

e08b3bf1b6ae4acbbb532c0e0c4e3360.jpg

Get home and the buffer powers right up no problem. Great. Switch batt to the caulk gun and nothing happens. I think, damn, serves me right. Should never bought a used batt tool especially untested.

So i figure im stuck lets take it apart see if a battery lead is broken or something easy/obvious.

Get the plastic split and there's a crazy lookong gunk build up on a half inch dia area near the rear of the gun. Start picking it out and some nasty maggot but **** is stuck in it. There was such a nest built up it expanded and closed the shut off switch to stop the motor when the caulk tube is empty. I know, no pic or it didnt happen so....

I got it apart, cleaned out, and back together in probably 15 mins and now it works fine. Or at least seems too, have to get a caulk project to be sure but at least the motor spins and the bar moves.

I made good on my plan to use the buggered 6" dividers I bought for for parts today to repair a pair of 8" dividers. After removing rust from all the important elements I discovered the donor to be PS&W and the recipient to be Sargent & Co. The Sargents had no bow and the spring was broken. So I filed off the head of the rivets on each and substituted a finish nail. Now I have a full length 8" dividers to go with another 8" pair that was sharpened down to 7-1/2" by a PO, maybe to compensate for a broken tip like on the 6" PS&Ws.

Pretty slim pickins around my area for quite awhile. Scored these today from a community wide yard sale. $11 spent and 3.5 hrs walking+ listening to SIL turbo motor jaws.
Williams/Vulcan 30/32 doe
Powr-kraft 8 in adj
Craftsman arc-joint amber handle pliers
Anyone know if the craftsman pliers are from the same era as the amber handled ratchets some people are fond of?

My first ray gun, a nice 3/8 inch drill, made by Ram Tool Corp., model F-4. Called the "Fury". Works fine for $5

I have a Ram Tool Corp. bench grinder from the same era -- works great; It looks like your drill, same as my bench grinder, will last forever. Nice score.

I had to resize my photos yesterday from 4400x2200 to 1920x1080 and then they uploaded fine.Wouldn't go the first time which was odd/unusual/never had an issue before.

Yeah, I had problems with uploading pics as well, once I resized there wasn't any problem. I guess whatever program the site's host uses to automatically resize pictures is having problems, and now is kicking back anything too big to handle.

I use this online service, it saves a lot of time if you have a pile of pics to resize:

regarding those industrial shop lights...

I have seen lights like these used as wall sconces in upscale coffee shops. I think they would look great and provide practical task lighting in anybody's garage/shop. Just mount them on a side wall somewhere and push them out of the way when not aimed at a drill press, lathe or whatever.

(this pic loaded directly with an old iPad). No tapatalk.

Another kitchen pic today. :p

Went for my weekly walk this morning.
Not as many vendors at the FM this week as previous. Only about 150 instead of the normal 200-300 on a dry day. The heat and humidity might have something to do with it, but more likely they took the holiday weekend off.

I thought I was going to get out of there without spending any money since the tool vendors were MIA. Unfortunately, about halfway through I stumbled into some rust and $30 fell out of my wallet. The vendor was kind enough to pick it up for me, but it ended up in his pocket as I walked away with a heavy handful of useless steel.

$10ea.
Williams (diamond-W) #45 DOE
--------- 1-1/8 USS / 1-1/4 SAE x 1-1/4 USS / 1-3/8 SAE
unknown maker :
--------- No 4 alligator wrench
--------- No 3 alligator wrench

image.jpg

The squares on the linoleum are about 9"-9-1/2" (depending on where you start)

I made a big mistake, but not really regretting it, with the DOE. I'm trying to assemble a set of Billings numbered DOE's for the wall, and couldn't read the stamp under the rust. I thought I was seeing "NGS", but when I got home and wire wheeled it, it was the "AMS" in Williams. NBD, it's still a cool big 'ol wrench. :D

The alligator wrenches, well ............ there were two sizes. That's almost a complete set. Right ? :lol_hitti

Up this morning after major storms yesterday. We had lost power for about 5 hours yesterday, which is unusual. Tree limbs down everwhere, expecially Norway maples and Callery pears. Looked like local flash floods left trash several feet up above street level in some places. Wife and I drove out to the flea again.
What a great day! Bonney single offset box wrenches, Bonney Crowfoots, Craftsman underline logo torque wrench, Craftsman crown logo 1/4" chisel, craftsman ratcheting offset screwdriver, c1921/22 Vacuum Grip (Newark NJ) slipjoints with 1921 patent, Champion DeArment battery pliers with patent, and some sundries:
$30.

My finds from driving around half the world yesterday. Was going to what looked like a good "digger" sale in another part of the state yesterday, but traffic was gonna be stopped for 2-3 hours on the two lane I was on while they cleared a bad wreck. So everone who didn't have to be on that side of the Cascades turned around. So I went to a used tool shop, getting the Ford ignition module tool, PowerKrakt spinner, P&C DBE and Proto LA flex. $3 for all. Then drove around looking for anything interesting in Eugene with no luck. Took the long way back and found a TOO estate sale on 50% day, getting the Audels, Snap On distributor wrench, couple sockets, Proto extension and Stanley drill points for a five. Picked up the mini bat (gonna use as a slick handle) old glasses, couple SO sockets and SK diamond tackle box for another fiver at the restore the other day.

BMW, you may need to post the pics locally on GJ. PB is cracking down on third party hosting and we just get the message that you need to upgrade...

Moore, Nice Pickups! on the box, you will need to compare colors to any P&C boxes, of the Era, maybe in the P&C thread?

The wood handled driver, is it also P&C or is it Plvmb?

I was about to ask for an overall of the pick. Is it too large?

So here it is, small enough to post. I took the opportunity to clean the duct tape residue off it. The shaft is 17" long. I suppose I should start looking for the sheath.

I don't know the age of it, but it looks older than this entrenching tool I bought at a flea market around 1980. It had a belt holster (which I have lost, along with the belt) and the handle was OD green. A few years ago I decided I wanted the wood grain to show, so I sanded it and applied a coulple coats kf BLO.

Mrs No_Garage and I ran up to Stormville NY this morning for their monthly Antiques Flea Market at the Stormville Airport. It was fairly small (not surprising on a Holiday weekend) and we picked up a few little things.

I grabbed a 1/2" drive 15/16" Craftsman socket for a specific task for a $1.00. I wanted a 3/8" drive - DOH.

I got an old mechanical jar opener for another $1.00. It's sitting in vinegar derusting everything below the wooden handle at the moment.

I got a glass frog for arranging flowers for $3.00. More on that later.

Mrs No_Garage and I agreed that we won't hurry back to Stormville - if we are heading that way we will go to the Elephant's Trunk further on up in CT - it's a much nicer (and more pricer Flea).

Cheers

Jim

I believe those hand mattoxes were only made during WWII.

LesserSon,
That looks like it might be an interwar or possibly a wartime Pioneer Kit mattock (pickaxe) to me, with a bent adze blade. (Not sure how that's possible, unless it doesn't have a reinforcing rib underneath. Does it?) The head on a wartime mattock was anywhere between 16” to 18-1/2” long, from the adze blade to the tip of the pick, depending on maker (Warwood, Diamond Calk, etc), and it should weigh 5 lbs (without the handle). The weight was not a variable. It was the only specified dimension, with the others (length and width of blade, etc) being industry standards. Many of them are marked with a “5” to indicate the weight just as wartime Pioneer kit axes (Dayton pattern) are marked with a “4” to indicate their weight. Are you sure it doesn’t have any markings other than the US? That style "US" looks interwar to me, and the shorter blade without a reinforcing rib makes me lean that way even more.

Here are some photos of WWII mattocks for comparison:

The adze does curve and has a low reinforcing rib. I think it's been seriously shortened (overall length 13-5/8" - note how the edge transects the rib profile), which makes it appear straight. The weight has me puzzled: 1-3/4lb. Even with 4" lopped off, that's not even close to 5. I'll check my spring postal scale with a known weight, but it has a 2lb range: it should have bottomed out.
I find no marks on the steel aside from "US" - could be something was removed when the adze was shortened.
The shaft does have a small legend under its "US" which looks like "N??" Followed by a "4". But I am wondering at how the head doesn't slide very near the end of the shaft. Could this be mismatched, even though contemporaneous? Maybe the head is a lightweight version?

Edit: You surely meant 2lbs without the handle, not 5lbs. Still a quarter-pound below spec, but reasonably explained by overzealous sharpening, rather than a totally different part.
After doing some websearching, I think this is not from a Pioneer Kit (vehicle-carried, which would indeed have a 5lb head and a 36" handle), but a M1910 intrenching pick mattock correct in all details for WWI/interwar period, minus wear. Prior to WWII, one should NOT expect date or manufacturer stamps. Prior to WWI, one should not expect OD (or any other) paint. In April/May 1905 the military requested the manufacture of pick mattocks for personal carry of 2lb4oz, 22" length, to accompany the picket shovel. With refinements, this beomes the M1910 model.
