ALL: for all your single guys out there that like garage sales, auctions and old stuff might i suggest shopping for your bride when at garage, estate sales and auctions cause there are plenty of keepers out there with the LUST FOR RUST that are handy and good looking.

good luck with that

Any woman that's out looking for rusty gold at sales and ends up dragging me home needs to have her head examined. I'm OK with owning my own crazy, but I have no interest in purchasing someone else's. I won't even rent it anymore.

This was a box my Step Dad bought new way back and he just gave me a while back. They are getting to the age that they don't work on things as much as they have someone else do it for them. I got the box here and a tote of home maintenance tools. Finally got a chance to clean it up and swap my tools from another box over into it. While cleaning it up, I found the original crown top keys for the lock and a pamphlet of the available tool boxes at that time.

Well funny you mentioned that, those tools belonged to her daddy and he aint around anymore. I snuck out to give her car a once over while she and the wife were saying their goodbyes.
I didnt want them dam craftsman tools cluttering up my Proto and S-K any how, and I got enough junk in the garage..:)

A perfect ending, G&B. I hope she makes it back to Iowa without encountering any bad weather.

BTW, I told my wife, "Sweetheart, let me read you this entry from the Garage Journal Garage Sale thread." Normally she groans and rolls her eyes when I say that, and this time was no exception. However, I had her cackling with laughter by the time I got to the end, and later on we were quoting some of your lines back and forth like you do after a good movie. :lol_hitti:lol_hitti:lol_hitti:lol::lol::lol:

The plotter probably has perfectly good stepper motors and precision shafts inside. Is it an HP?

Here is what I kept from it, along with a couple pieces of sheet metal from the side covers. That's a 90vdc motor, speed control panel, I'll need to test it but it got rained on the night before so I will let it all dry out first. There are slotted tracks, gears and chains, lots of hardware and some other junk in there.

Sure, this sounds like a good one and we have plenty of time soooo???? :)

gonna try to shorten and papraphrsae this much as possible'

So I was on fb this morn and an ad popped up on one of my buy/sell trade groups. $30 killer deal, i'm on it. Wife , who has the hearing of a jackrabbit hears me typing and investigates.
See's young chicks pic- it's fb- and says she's going along, ok fine.
We get there to a completley bare apt save for a couple clothes baskets, the toolbox and a headlight bulb sitting next to toolbox.
I go to pay her and ask if the bulb goes with the box. No she says, her friend from work was supposed to come by and change it a couple days ago but didn't show. She goes on to tell us that she's leaving to move back to Iowa in the morning and needs it changed.
Wife; My man's a set-up guy, he does that stuff all the time. "Go change that"
So being supervised by these two for a couple minutes while I changed the bulb. Wife has me check the fluids too. Oil was barley touching the dipstick also needed PS fluid and anti-freeze. So I tell her-them.
Wife; "Well go get some"
Me; "WTF"...to myself
Leaving autozone, $28 later I get back to girl in tears and wife hugging her.
So I guess she followed her man here after he got out of the Navy, he got physical with her after she busted him with her new friend, He's a guest at the county hotel now. Anyhow wife has me check out the whole car.
Me; Your left front tire has the belts showing through, you cant drive anywhere on this, you need a new one.
She; I dont have the money (crying)
Wife; Call your friend Red and ask him how much for a good used tire.
Me; Red aint open today, it's Sunday
Wife ; Call him!!!
Me; Fine Ok...Hey Red..man can you help us out..need tire today...emergency ya know.
Red; FU..I dont work on Sunday.... period! ---
Wife takes phone from my hand and asks Red if he remembers his wife finding ******* in back of his Suburban and blaming it on me. Assures him she knows the truth and I didn't go fishing that night, cause my daughter had an accident that night and I was at the hospital for 6 hrs.
Red; I dont care...
Wife hangs up, pulls out her own phone and calls Red's wife..Oh hi honey, can you ask Red if he can come change my Niece's tire today, It's an emergency and he aint answering his phone....pause..
Reds wife; Oh yea he said to tell you he's on his way.
So Red generously donated a good used tire on a Sunday.
Anyhow I'm trying to help, and while im kneeling checking the pressure on the tire after it's mounted I hear a deep rumbling sound. Trying to lighten the mood I ask "which one of you girls farted"? The girl said her stomach was rumbling.
My wife went on to tell me and Red that after her "Man" went to jail, his family went and cleaned out the entire apt. They took everything including the food. The only reason she had the toolbox was because it was in the trunk of her car.
Wife; Thats ok honey, we're going out to eat after this and you can come along.
Me; Yea i'm starved, I could smash a double whopper right about now.
Wife; well you and Red have fun at BK, me and Maggie are going to Red lobster cause I want a cocktail. It's my day off, Give me your card!!
Me; WTF...to myself
Red; You think she's gonna tell?
Me; Shut up Red
...............So there you are, factor in what I just spent at the drive-thru and the firewood they're burning up plus breakfast in the morning......guessing that box is gonna be well over $200
YOUNG GUYS...dont get married!!!!! You will have days like this.
Trust me I left stuff out...Cheers, Bill.

I am so tempted to start a garage sale/craigslist/swap meet b.s. or story thread. Your story was off the chain and I was laughing  Had to share it with my wife. And then I got to thinking about my own sketch situations from buying stuff over the years.

Check out the new garage sale/craigslist/swap meet b.s. thread over in free parking. Make sure to bring your boots, it's gonna get thick and you are going to have to wade through it!

$10 was on the Indestro box, I knew the sockets were generic japanese which I didn't care about them. I just wanted the box.
I don't blame you. I used to have a complementary box with a complete Indestro Super 1/2-inch drive socket set in it. The vintage is late 1940's or early 1950's,

I think the garage sale and re-sale stories belong here.. They add a new purpose for THIS thread rather than merely talking about tools bought.. I think we should leave it all together in one fun thread.. IMHO

+1 on the stories being posted here. I enjoy the stories as much or often even more than what was purchased.

On the way back to work at lunch I happened upon a house being cleaned out and bought this lot for $10.

Not pictured is a bucket of small tools / hardware / misc. and a large aluminum pan that may serve as a chip tray when I finally find an Atlas shaper...

Any clue what the piece labeled St. John is? I'm assuming something nautical but I'm definitely no expert.

I got out to two huge flea markets this week end and ended with some good stuff, You guys saw the Plomb wrench lot, but this is what else I brought home with me. The ratchets I scored all came from two different vendor with just piles of old tools laid out on tarps. I dug round and asked what they were getting on ratchets. $2 at one, $3 at the other. While looking around other booths I found two Ampco brass tools! Always looking for these!

5 Plomb Sockets, 1 is 8 points and one is swivel
Proto LA 3/8 extn
Proto LA 1" combo pebble insets
4" Proto adjustable wrench
Ampco 7/16 dblebox end
Ampco 6" Adjustable
Hinsdale 25/32 - 3/4 dblebox
SK 1/4" socket driver
IREGA 8" adjustable made in Spain
Needle nose pliers
1/2" Snap On 5" extension
1/2" Williams 10" extension
Thorsen obstruction wrench

Ratchets

Armstrong 3/8 Plombish look
Bonney 3/8
Wright 3/8
Thorsen Flex head 3/8
Pennens 1/2
Challenger 1/2
Craftsman 1/2
Craftsman 1/4 ratchet in box with a few cm 1/4 sockets

Over all a pretty good haul, all ratchets work great!

I had a great $80 day. A 1/3 HP block grinder on CraigList, then I re-visited a sale that Nine and I had been to several times. I picked for about an hour at the latter, gathering a bucket of consumables. On the way out I was feeling sort of brave, and dug a little deeper in a dilapidated shed that was piled to the ceiling while the floor was collapsing. I moved a few things and in the distance I spotted what I thought was a round top block grinder. Turns out it was a Belsaw grinder. The switch was busted in the off position, so I got it thrown in with the bucket o' stuff. Bypassed the switch and it runs slicker than cat ****, though I will replace the bearings.

WP_20170304_11_15_20_Pro.jpg

Guess who just found the Operators Manual and Repair Parts List for that Belsaw!

Is that the same person who wants to buy or trade for my Belsaw? :bounce:

I snagged a mis-listed Speedglas 9002X for $60. It's a little toasty, but I got it last night and it works great. Who knew 3M owned Flowmaster ;)

Now I just need a welder ...

Not me LOL! I saw one of those a few years ago with the stand and the long sharpening arm. You need to keep an eye out for the arm, it may have had the optional bench mount.

Dang! If you make it down this way at any point and still have that Hobart cabinet I'd gladly work a deal with you.

I did see online that there were more attachments and whatnot. I found a Belsaw stand in the jam packed shed Nine posted (no other attachments unfortunately), but it doesn't appear to be correct for the grinder I picked up. Still very sturdy, and at $10 with a Wetterlings axe head and a couple of 12v switches, I was happy.

Agreed Hemi, we love a good story along with a find. I know recently I posted the story of the socket set find in its own thread. :headscrat Oops. Didn't post the story here but I should've. I definitely have plenty of old stories I can tell though Smokeshow.

St John is a leg spreader for skinning hogs and deer I think.

Well I learned something new again from the GJ. Thanks Nine and BlueBolt.

I'm thinking that it might have something to do with that magic **** crack that Nine posted a picture of.

Thanks Nine and Bluebolt. A gynechiatry tool would have been my second guess, and hunting / butchering third :)

Ouch!

That's one of the funniest reads ever - just because it touches some bit of the experiences that all of us have had at one time or another. You're a good guy to help her out, and hopefully you scored a few points (or moved a little bit out of negative territory) with SWMBO. You say don't get married. Perhaps there's a simpler lesson here: How about you just do your "internet tool ****" shopping in the privacy of another room? :lol_hitti

You know what? For all that Craftsman goodness, for $200, it was still worth it.

I think Maggie could have used a fill up on her tank as well.

Thanks for sharing.

nine4GMC nailed it, butcher's gambrel for deer, hogs, cattle and other livestock and game.

That size would probably be to big for most if not all deer. cattle and the largest hogs. IMO.

I have two that were fabbed up in SS. the one I take is the folding Gambrel someone came up with... Worked great last year!

I had a an hour between drop off and pickup at the youngest boy's preschool so I picked up my Danner's from the local shoe shop, new soles look great and swung by the pawn shop on the way back. $7.00 for the items. THe 1/2 proto fit in my main user wrench set (Now all Wright and Proto) in the home shop. The 3/8 Craftsman -V- is in outstanding shape, barely used.

10 in Martin adjustable (never had a Martin, seems like its good quality)
8 inch Cresent USA adjustable
Large Proto pliers
Channellock wire stripper
3 sockets(SK WAYNE, MAC and Cman) and a 1/2 Cman extension
1 1/8 challenger wrench
USA stubby DBE

Sorry for the long pics, must have had some odd setting on the camera

Picked up a load of culverts a few days ago.
Got 3, 30in x 20ft culverts, along with 3 - 18in x 20ft, 2 - 15in x 20ft, 3 - 10in x 20ft. Then some various shorter sections.

Almost lost a few on the way back, I shoved them in them pretty good.

I paid $300 for all of them. I am currently on my way to pick up 4 more big ones, will post those later.

Ouch!

I would love to hear some...the thread I created was more for old stories than the new stuff. I love hearing the stories posted with the finds in this thread but for old retrospect stuff, if you are inclined feel free to post over in the free parking in my thread! Hope no one thought I was trying to detract from this thread as I love it's current format! Just wanted a thread for others to post their old stories about good or bad things that happened while hunting for anything we would normally post in this thread :rocker:

Well no good looking estate sales in my area or garage/yard sales this weekend but I did get to hit a pawn shop I've been meaning to revisit. Last time I was there they had totes of tools and I had limited time but got a good deal on a few things. This is one of those places where you get an empty box or tote next to the stacked totes of screwdrivers or pliers and sift from one box to next. So I thought I was gonna find a bunch of good stuff but maybe it had been picked over pretty good. Plus I'm getting more selective in what I want for myself. When I was done the old dude behind the counter said you must have $1000 worth of stuff as long as you've been digging- got me a bit worried but after checking through it he said $15 which I didn't even bother countering.
SO swivel spark plug sockets 13/16 & 5/8 and flat blade screwdriver
Ac delco 3/8 ext - found I love the knurling
Klein snips / Phillips / 4in1
Crosby shackle and USA forged hook
Milwaukee razor blade knife
Knipex alligator plier And a rain bird tool for the sprinkler system although I have no idea what it's for ( like a cross flat head)
f1702f24b4379a934979a390f9b0bd40.jpg

I went to an auction as well but walked away as there was nothing worth waiting around for but next auction I think will have an item to bid on - a very cool grinder. So I'm optimistic on at least another post here !

Finally sitting down with a drink (Pappy's Bayou Tea) and time to do some updates on my finds.

Canton TX Auto swap meet last Friday, didn't find a lot but came home with 2 Craftsman toolboxes.

Craftsman machinist box, late 1970's with a lot of electrical tools for radios and TV's. Paid $55 with the tools. The second picture is the better tools from inside.

Craftsman Crown label 1958 6 drawer top chest, Advertising Metal Display Co. Decent shape. Coolest thing is it still has the little owners manual. Paid $75. Now I need to find a Corbin BCS23 latch.

I have an even nicer, nearly identical, 1957 Heritage logo 6 drawer top box as well.

Picked up 4 more culverts last night. Paid $300 for all them. Also got some chain link fence thrown in.
I already had it prearranged to sell one of them on the return trip. I sold 1 of them for $600. So now I've got 6, 30in x 20ft culverts along with other smaller sizes with $0 in them. All profit from here on out on this deal.

These were a little tricky to load but we managed to figure out a way. Put some metal poles I had brought on top and made a platform for the top two.

After dropping the one off.
