ALL: not sure if any of you have run across one of these old farm or lumberyard carts that are a bit bigger than Swing's cart he found, but i found a couple about 2 years apart but in same area of the state and they are keepers.

i've actually had 2000 pounds of weight plates on this yellow one and moved it with very little if any effort over a smooth warehouse floor, but i've also had 1000-1500 pounds on it moving it over bumps and lips on concrete.

I just got back from a 11 hour drive (8.5 hours of actual driving) to pick up this Reed 106 and a few odds and ends. that old trunk is full of sandpaper, buffing wheels and deburring wheels that i didn't know i needed when just picking up the vise.

I saw an exactly same reed 106r on a stand on toledo cl, did happened to buy it from tokedo?

Bought 1 item, which I think is a milling machine vise with swivel base.

It was rusty, so did some heavy cleaning on it and maker tag is missing, but did see a few number 54 marked into it in a couple of the metal pieces.

Weight around 110 pounds, with 6 inch jaws and max opening of 6 inches.

Everything moves easily now.

On the bottom base, there is a crack on base (see pic 7) that appears to have been there for awhile, but which is now noticeable due to it being cleaned up.

My original suspicion was foreign made, but the number 54 marked in some of the metal pieces makes me wonder.

Any advise, including whether it's good only for scrap, would be appreciated.

Mike

Picked up this CL find; Craftsman drill press in working order, for $50. I didn't want a floor model, but for the price , I think I did good. Think it was a good value?

IDK if I would mill with that vise too much but I bet it would last you a lifetime on a drill press.

$50 for that drill press, you ****!

Went to an estate sale yesterday, I picked up the little lawn buddy cart (had a short soaker hose in it) should come in handy working in my raised garden beds, pair of channel locks (430 & 420 I think), couple SK wrenches, smaller USA wrenches (Craftsman, Penncraft, and generic USA), cheap chisel, file with holder, craftsman screwdriver, and what I think is a Klein screwdriver, but no name on is just USA patent? Little ridgid pipe cutter, 3-way power splitter, and a china clamp. I think I paid $20 for all that.

Then today I went back to see what was left. Got a LARGE coffee can full of wire nuts, all assorted sizes. I went through and chucked the messed up ones and separated out the screws & nails and such into the little country crock tub. Had some other misc conduit connectors too. $3 for the jumbo coffee can that I will never need wire nuts again as long as I live... lol. Paid $5 for the 6 Masterlocks, the pics don't do them justice, the ones of the far left are BIG. Oh, also paid $1 for a bag of old rags just to use in the garage (no pic, sorry).

Stopped by a pawn shop on the way home, found the two little 1/4" drive USA Craftsman socket sets, SAE & Metric (too bad not deepwell!) that are near mint inside. Diamond 12" adjustable wrench, Craftsman USA -V- Breaker, Plumb ball peen hammer, Craftsman =V= extension, and Craftsman 7/8" combo wrench (USA, forgot which)...

Oh, bought about 1,500 1/4"-drive USA Craftman sockets too... Will take pics of those puppies tomorrow...

Drives- nice reed.

Here is my estate sale score for today.
Cornwell AWB1012 doe tappet? wrench
Snap-on RXS16 line/open combo
Plvmb 708 adjustable, marked PLVMBALVY
And the stained glass owl for my sister

Wrenches were $1/ea, owl $2. The Plvmb was hiding in the kitchen junk drawer. I'm excited, been looking for one for a while! even though this one is rough it works nicely. Has a broached hanger hole

Cant believe how nice these cleaned up with Simple Green and gentle wire brushing! The Cornwell is most cosmetically noticeable, but the Plvmb adjustable was covered in decades of paint and cosmoline. It has a date code of 1946, so same year Plvmb bought JP Danielson.

Not yet. All the hardware was there. And I mean every square nut, bolt, pin and strap. Now I'm just waiting to find some wood that has some decent old stencil ads from relatively the same period so I can complete it.

Maybe look for some large pallets to disassemble.. Buddy of mine was dissecting one that came into his shop and we found the main weight bearing lower structure to be oak.. Nice stuff with a rough appearance and thick cut too.

Whchua: bot my new REED 106 in Oregon if that helps so maybe yours is still available.

ALL: I had a couple members cross the boarder last night and lighten my loads a bit and here's a couple pieces we loaded up on their truck. did i mention i like big hunks of steel, but just didn't have a spot for these and i think one of them is going to be the base for a 150-200 pound blacksmith vise.

hope you all have a great weekend and if any of you are in Oregon or visiting in the Portland area i'm hearing the Portland Swap meet at the race track near the boarder has some cool stuff even though it's stormy with a lot of wind and rain.

3Bay, I like those body hammers. That Bonney...

Drives, nice score on that REED!

It was just above freezing this morning, so not many vendors at the flea. I was surprised to see this EAGLE oily rag can sitting there. Brass UL tag on top. It followed me home for $15.

Busy day today. Lots of driving back and forth.
The first GS sale was cancelled. They changed it to tomorrow at the last minute. I probable won't go back.

The second GS sale was a disappointment. They opened 20min late with a line waiting at the garage door. Nothing worth bothering with.

Then back to the house to wait for the next sale to open (I should have gone straight to it).

The third stop was 30min in the other direction. It was supposed to start at 10a, but when I got there 5min early, they had opened at 9:30. By then, all the good stuff was already loaded. There was a Beaver electric pipe threader still there, but I was afraid to ask the price in case it went home with me. Tempting, but I have absolutely no use for it. In the end I spent $10.

16" piece of RR track (38lbs) (I don't need anymore, but I couldn't leave it behind)
a groovy plastic pencil sharpener
Hansen "Ace" #S20P screw extractor set (#'s 2,3,4,5)

100_2464.jpg

The last stop this morning was at a consignment shop that does estate sales. Back to where I started. They were having a clearance sale to make room. HIGH PRICES on furniture, but the tools were priced to move, mostly common fair. I spent a total of $6.

Makita #6905H electric 1/2dr impact gun ($5 - works)
Craftsman DOE 1/2"-9/16" wrench (=V=)
Proto #4869 1/4dr spinner w/ext. socket in handle

100_2465.jpg

Then back to the house once again to wait.

That's it for now, but I have to be at a P/U for an online estate sale at 2p. I won 2 lots (only 1 is tools). More pics later .............. :bounce:

...turns out 4 are Blue Point. BF-606,BF-608,BF-610,BF-612...
That's a terrific set. They are considerably older (I would guess late 40's or 50's) than the dinger with the BF-611 1980 date code. My BF-611 with the 1948 date code would look more at home with the rest of the family! :) Hold on to them and I'll hold on to mine and maybe we can work something out one way or another some day.

That will look great in your shop surrounded by same vintage bins, boxes, and oil cans!

So Mrs No_Garage and myself hit a few sales this AM.

At Sale #1 she bought a HUGE box of NOS "Stampin-Up" rubber stamps for CHEAP. There are 100 brand new stamp sets and some used sets that she got for $30.00. Sets sell for $5 - $25 on EBAY so she should get her initial investment back even if she keeps most of them.

This purchase reminded me of a sale on our list with a multi-drawer storage cabinet. We hit that sale and the cabinet was still there. She got it for $30 (down from $50). The stamp cases fit nicely so it can store the entire lot.

The cabinet is an All-Steel 7 Drawer card cabinet. The bottom panel is TOAST but everything else is in fine shape. My immediate plan is to make a wood bottom and sit it up on blocks so it's off the floor in the basement. The final solution would be to cutting out the rot, have a piece of sheetmetal folded up and tacked into place - but that can wait. A quick cleaning and a coat of paint and voila - it will be in service.

Cheers

Jim

I was rained out so, rebuilding the side yard fence...

Not quite sure Outlaw, probably both tool related and hat related, but I'm picturing you going to choose a hammer and saw and it looks like Indiana Jones picking out the Holy Grail for the job :bounce:

:bounce: My son who is helping me thought so! "Dad I need a Hammer, where are the usual Claw hammers? I can't find the right one... "

And by the way I mentioned this comment to my son and Daughter, (who is also helping) and they both burst out laughing!

More close ups.

Nice load of drive tools, 3Bay!

I took 53 pounds of aluminum cans up to the recycling center after lunch. +$22
But I bought 99 pounds of 'junk' :dunno: -$35

I took a net loss of $13, but I brought home some interesting stuff.

Old screw jack, Craftsman 1HP motor, a dual note air horn, and this ancient belt drive grinder - I think it's 'Cutter, Wood & Stevens, Co. BOSTON', bearings are free and feel good. Appears to have most everything there.

I went to two estate sale and the first one started at 7:30am, so I showed up at 7:00am to be the fifth guy in line. Listening to the guys in front of me, two of them said they were after tools so I was a little worried. Well the sale started and we walked in to the garage and of course they hit the table with the tools. I came up behind them and started looking, wasn't a lot to really look at as most was no name stuff and there was a lot of screwdrivers on the wall. They kept picking at this rolled up leather tool bag but didn't really open it up. So I picked up the leather tool roll and pulled out one of the wrenches out to see Snap On!!! So I held onto the roll and spotted the Plomb speed wrench also! But that was pretty much all I found that generated any interest at that sale. Well I did get a jar of unopened spaghetti sauce for $.50 and a two liter of Sprite for $.50 so guess what's for dinner?! Total price was $11 at that sale.

Then at the second sale I picked up two hook pulleys and a mess kit for the hiking backpack for $3 total. No pics at this moment.

Geez. I walked away from a tool roll this morning. They wanted $35. The tools and roll were only marked with 'made in China'. Had they said snap on....

So, went to the big Portland swapmeet yesterday and the PIR swap today. (They are right next to each other, but not run by the same people.) So, Fridays finds:

SK Wayne breaker in 3/8, late Proto spinner, several different Proto LA or pebble drivers, a New Britain rat (not working), an Artisan (SK) 1/4 rat, two MAC Sabina drivers and a MAC bit driver and a Starrett magnetic base. The base was $20 and everything else a buck or two. (The Artisan was $4)

Then a small military tin ($2) and a couple film canisters, one marked Kodak ($1)

A Proto LA 1/2 socket box, got that for $15 once he took the SK stuff out of it. Been looking for a good one for a long time, so I was OK with the price.

That's it for now, but I have to be at a P/U for an online estate sale at 2p. I won 2 lots (only 1 is tools). More pics later .............. :bounce:

So, the internet auction pick-up went ok. But not as fruitful as I had hoped.

The first item was an Insignia (Best Buy) 40" 1080p flatscreen TV to replace my 32" 720p.
I got caught up in the bidding war and paid more than I wanted, but still got a slim deal. I can live with it.

100_2466.jpg

The next lot that I had won was a pile of misc hand tools. The pictures were inconclusive on the screwdrivers (SnapOn shaped handles) but the two items that I wanted out of it were worth the chance. I paid $41 for the lot.

100_2467.jpg

100_2468.jpg

I was going to write up a list, but the majority of the pile is junk. The SO shaped objects turned out to be chinese trash. Most will go in the 50¢ea pile for the yard sale I'll never get around to having.

Here are the few gems I pulled out of the donkey's ****.

S-K Tools #4921 shallow/deep SAE 1/4dr socket set (complete)(this is the one that caught my eye)
B&D drill and bit set
aluminum funnel
Husky precision bit set
Stanley #9-1/4 block plane
Mack 32oz (??) BP hammer
Bostich Antivibe framing hammer w/nail starter
???? (Germany) slip-joint dykes
K. Miller Tool Co. wire stripper
Channellock #436 cutter
Fuller (Japan) #112 pliers

100_2470.jpg

Not the score I was hoping for, but not bad. It could have been much worse given all the running around I had to do today (close to 120mi).

Tomorrow isn't looking too good. The local FM was supposed to open last Sunday, but we had snow. This week we had heavy rains during the week. The field is a swamp, so they may not open for the season until the 23rd. It's supposed to be hot this week. Maybe we'll get locusts after Easter just to get Bingo. :p

Then, today's finds:

I hit the $1 tables hard, and as today was the last day of the swap, so...MAC 1/4 extension, Snap On spinner, Craftsman spinner, SK bit driver, Ocean City reel (not working, yet...) a little Japanese 1/4 socket set and a Snap On impact socket. Also got a Weller soldering set ($5), another of those Proto dual driver long ratchets ($5) and a Bonney 1/4 ratchet with a couple Williams sockets ($5).
And then I picked up this wooden box:

Needs a little work (a bit of water damage and such) but...

Was able to talk him down to $35, but only as long as I took all the taps in it (last day, got to love it!.) The taps weren't half bad, and went down to 1-72...

So with all the wind and rain and what not, I had a blast. Even if I didn't drop 40K on a new ride.

Man you guys are killing it! love this thread on the week ends!! That proto box is killer! I started out with the small flea market in town, and a few G and E sales. Found a few small things. Then drove an hour to the big monthly flea market and got some good Plomb stuff, some were from a man I met last month in his 80's that said he is the original owner and had bought them himself!! Picked up a 6" deluxe Delta jointer with art deco cast iron base for $300. Guy didn't speak the language of haggling but with that base I wasn't going to argue. Nine was gracious enough to come along to help me load and unload the heavy sumbitch. From his research on the way back it appears that the stand was made between 1939 and 1944; the jointer is also likely original to the base but it's hard to tell as there's no model number (that I see easily visible), only a serial number.

Plenty of rusty junk for me this weekend. Starting Friday at one estate sale then a small take at a flea market today. Grabbed so much junk I'm not sure where to start...:dunno:
More than a dozen hammer of all shapes and sizes including and 1800's Plumb
More than a dozen chisels some are late 1800's
Dozen Axe's , hatchets , adze's , shaves and knives
3 dozen or more pliers, wrench's and tongs
A pair of old tool boxes-Hinsdale and Waterloo saw box
Cobblers hand shoe anvil and what I think is a wheel wright anvil

At the FM I picked up a training grenade, 1950's maybe or it could just be a repop with a good fuse screwed in it. Also a BSA mess kit (fork knife & spoon) , lil cast iron bug( for my growing collection of iron bugs :eyecrazy: And the last thing was a small sharping stone on one side and a leather pad on the other. It has a wooden handle and the whole thing spins on the handle. Barber tool?
