Here's a new one for me from the only sale listing tools this morning... I picked up 5 wooden handle screw drivers, a Klein pocket knife, a pair of Motor Spec slip joint pliers and a 6" Proto adjustable.
One of the screw drivers is a USA Greatneck, one a Vlcheck, one a Bridgeport and two are a brand I never came across before... Reed Prince. A quick search on sold items on ebay yielded a shocking find.... :dunno: :pimpflash

$5.50 for every thing

Reed Prince made screws along with drivers, but the best part is they used their own drive system, which works pretty good. Used on boats a lot.

Well found, 3bay!

Still in Dayton, and visited some old friends from when we lived here. Dan is a retired machinist, and when he heard I had a lathe, he insisted on giving me this toolbox and a whole bunch of tooling that he said was just getting rusty sitting in his shed.

Here are a few pics of the toolbox. It kinda looks like a Gerstner, but it has an outer metal skin, vice a wood finish. Dan said it was old when he got it.

Thanks! I'm seeing a lot of hardware from them now that I am looking them up.

I picked this old Wards box up today-it's in better shape than the photos would seem to show-it's covered with a greasy layer of dirt that's covering up most of the original paint. Any ideas on how old it is? I never saw any machinists in my plant with one of these-our shop was just about 100% Kennedy boxes then.

Nice box, Jeeper. That Ward's box is made by Kennedy. The newest it could be would be from when Ward's stopped selling their own branded tools in the 80s, but could be from as far back as the 50s. Kennedy made the same boxes for 50 years or more, and everyone from Sears to S-K put their names on em.

The "compass doohickey" is for making measurements on maps where each inch = 1 mile, or centimeter = 1 Kilometer. Is there a switch?

Had to go to lowes so I figured I would check out the last day of an estate sale close by there. At first I was going to go when they opened at noon, but got busy and ended up going around 2pm...

First I went to the garage, it was pretty barren. Just found the knee pad (which I could have used working in my garden these past couple days) and the short hose with sprinkler head. I know I needed a short hose for something but couldn't remember what, so I grabbed it just because it was so cheap.

Walked around house nothing to noteworthy. Then I found some stairs leading downstairs! Walked down to a home-office, looked enticing... Turned my head looked out an open door and saw a small shop!

Being the last day and they were already starting to wrap things up the place was picked over pretty clean (so I thought). Saw the Bernzomatic box for using LP/MAPP & Oxy, even had a striker & goggles. Found some rods that I think are brass or copper, spool of aluminum wire, so I threw those in the box. Saw another LP head and grabbed it too... Nice little tack hammer... wire brush sitting on the counter, didn't even realize it was a craftsman till I got home. Thin, fine sharpening stone. JP Danielson pliers (from the 40's I believe), USA adjustable square, Craftsman tap holder and a generic USA one. Oh, looked down on the ground and I saw the sockets in the holder, checked them out and they are Metric CMan =V= :) Dovetail saw & yellow funnel just because. Needed to fix a little hole in my sheetrock and I saw the repair kit so I grabbed that  Since my box was overflowing I saw a big dented old coffee can in the corner of the work bench, I grabbed it and saw some sockets and stuff in it... Craftsman, Proto, Wera, Snap-On, Cornwell, and Companion USA. :)

Finally I saw the companion USA wood vise mounted on the work bench. No screwdriver in sight! Didn't want to walk all the way back to my truck so I made do with stuff around the shop. Thankfully there was also a cheap socket set so I could get the lag bolts out.

Could barely hold all the stuff I had and made it up the stairs to check out. Most of the things didn't even have prices on them, majority were just $1, highest price was the $9 torch set. Guy sitting there asks what all I had and he kind of looks through the box... "How does $10 sound?"... I told him sounds good to me.

I attended the Portland Automotive Swap Meet the past 3 days and came home with quite a haul.

Powr-Kraft 10pt socket set - $10
Challenger socket set (sans proper ratchet) - $3
New Britain socket set (sans ratchet) - $10
Proto "Flying Lady" top chest - $40
Matco 1/2" drive 200 in/lb flex-head torque wrench - $20
NEW Proto 3/4" drive breaker bar - $40 (My employer will reimburse me for this one, so I didn't mind paying half retail)
Craftsman 3/4" drive socket set with extensions and slider bar (not pictured) $50
A sweet P&C tools star wrench - $10
Lots of various rachets, wrenches, sockets, and misc that were, for the most part, $1 or less apiece. Much more that I have yet to photograph.

Here's some more pictures of the machinist tooling treasure trove Dan passed on to me. He's a great story teller--had some doozies from 40 years of working in Dayton manufacturing plants.

Now I just need to take some night classes to learn how to use this stuff!

Wow! that box must weigh a ton! I'm surprised those wood drawers held up under the weight of all that tooling. Lots of nice lathe toolbits there!

Swingpress - Having just picked up the same socket tray (mine was empty) and gone through the 1977 SK catalog, your socket kit is listed as a model #13 set. 7mm-19mm. Mine was free, but yours is complete. You win.

Nice bunch of tool boxes this week guys! That Wards is neat.

Swing- I had my eye on an orange Kennedy hand box recently.

Dang, Bomber. Cool friend you have there.

RagTop- funny how BlueBolt just posted a nice JCP set with the 3/8 ratchet too!

Jeremy- that is an interesting note about those Action ratchets.

11pm, was about to go to bed but thought I would check CL one last time. In the "free" section someone posted up "Metal army surplus drawer cabinet" about 30min prior... They were 10min away so I figured what the heck...

Sure enough they were sitting there by the curb... :) Somehow managed to pick them up and slide into the bed of my truck without making too much noise. lol

These will be perfect to sort out my sockets in.

JASON: i've got a few of those and that's the first time i've seen one painted RED. also looks like very little if any rust and pristine. WELL DONE!!!

i love mine and you'll love the size of the drawers cause you can find spots for those things that usually clog up a bench. yes i've still got FSD (flat surface disease), but it's getting better as i get more Organized.

great find

Stopped by a estate sale today on the way home from picking my kids up from school. I got all of the tools for 9.00 and my son got 7 baseballs for 2.00. Not a bad deal.

There's 4 Tiger Tools offset wrenches and one Dunlap for a set of five. Misc other wrenches, a USA made oil filter socket, a couple small hammers and a nice set of miniature nut drivers from XceLite.

I've never seen these before and there's a larger handle that the smaller drivers fit into.

Jason, pretty sure you have the exact same one I do, made by Hobart Cabinet Company from Troy Ohio. Check out my post http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6331325&postcount=822

Yeah! That's them! Thanks for the info. They only painted the outside red, the rest of the drawers when you open them is that flat OD green type color. Very good shape too, just a little rust in the corner of the body. The draws aren't even scratched up or nothing on the inside, can't believe it was free!

BB: DAN get's a thumbs up for being a great guy and giving you that COOL old box with all his expensive lathe tools in it.

i'm wondering if SHEFFIELD is made in England like Record vices and other old tools were? i can't read if there is any other writing on the tag and not sure if it's even writing. any other labels or information on that cool box to report?

DIF: Sheffield is/was definitely a USA company. It's still exists as a department of another company here in Dayton. The badge says "Master Gagemakers, Dayton, Ohio". No other labels or markings I've found yet.

This 1962 vintage 11-drawer cabinet/workbench combo (actual nomenclature is, "CABINET, STORAGE, VEHICLE REPAIR PARTS AND TOOLS", FSN 7125-330-0130) might not excite anyone who doesn't get off on all things Olive Drab, but I was ecstatic.

These were carted around in the back of 1.5 and 2.5 ton emergency repair trucks and 2nd echelon maintenance trucks. Basic tool-sets were stored in the drawers and a medium vise and small bench grinder would be clamped on the butcher block type workbench top.

I'm going to post more photos in the Vintage Tool Boxes thread when I get it cleaned up a little.

This is not good, this is not good at all. :headshake
I told myself that I wasn't going to go out today. I lied to myself. I must be punished. :lol_hitti

There was an estate sale at 10a this morning that mentioned an item that I might be interested in, no pictures, but I was certain that I'd be ok because the price would be too high.

I got to the sale 45min early, and was #18. Good, someone else would get to it before me and save me from myself. Since the item was in the barn, and it wouldn't be open until later, I just knew that someone else would be taking it home. I'm going to be alright. They opened late, and let the first 15 in. Good, the tools would be snatched up before I could get to the basement. (That part went pretty much as planned) So far, so good.

I picked up a few things and got off easy. I'm being a good boy, time to get out.

$2
a 1/2 box of 3mil contractor bags
Estwing #1 hatchet w/sheath
unknown Hammer (unknown type ?????)
unknown wall hanging 3/8dr socket tray (only stamped JAPAN)
S-K #8317 17mm combo wrench

100_2481.jpg

Then I made a fatal mistake. :eyecrazy:
I asked about the item in the locked barn.
I was told the price and I couldn't resist. I said SOLD !

Then it was an hour turnaround to get my trailer and pick it up.

$100
2 sections of 6' walk-thru pipe staging
w/ crossbars, pins, 2 leveling feet, and 1 platform.

100_2480.jpg

This is my second set of pipe staging this week.
I am a weak willed man.

Its a good thing that I'm not planning on going to the opening day of the flea market in NH, or the 4 sales that are advertising tools for sale tomorrow. Wait ! There's a sale on monday ! No. I mustn't. My wallet can't take anymore of this right now. :eek2:

If I cry Uncle, will it stop ?
