None for me this weekend... We've had a ton of rain this weekend so not many were posted beforehand, and the few that did are the typical piles of clothes.

This morning dawned to the BlueBomber family making final preparations for this afternoon's prom departure. See, my son's friend group of 12 or so are coming over to our place for pictures before leaving for prom, and they'll come back here afterward to hang out around a bonfire before going home. So, we spent the morning sweeping, cleaning, edging, and in general tidying up.

What's all this got to do with the garage sale thread??! Patience, let it build....

Well, after weeks of advance work, this morning we were done with final prep by 9:30. SWMBO said "Alright, I just need to run to the grocery store." I said "Okay, while you're doing that, there's a sale in the next town over I want to check out." She said "Why don't we do both, together?"

Ah, I love that woman!

First stop was a family run estate sale of mostly garage and workshop stuff. The workshop was emptier than I expected, but there were still some gems.

SWMBO also bought a package of 1969 Boston Pops 33-1/3 rpm records for our graduating musician son. The lady at the sale said her Dad used to make breakfast on Sundays and woke them up with the music on those records. She was glad they were going to a music lover--$15

My best girl was up for one more sale, so we drove around the way to another, where we picked up a wheel barrow for $5 (needs a new innertube and some wood repair) and 75 lbs of 2 ft x 1/2" rebar for another $5.

Then, we went to the grocery store and dropped more for party food than we spent at both sales!

you guys are killing it!

Not a lot of tools but I'm satisfied overall. I was able to score two lanterns and one is 1932-1935 I may never know the exact yer as a patch was soldered on the bottom for some reason...

I diverge...

eight planned stops, a few TOOs only one was productive:

$8 for this pic - 8" CI fry pan, two LARGE wrenches one Vlichek, and the other Proto LA, as is the 6" adjustable. the block is branded PG&E and the medallion, has "U W" on it.. :dunno: A bead chain full of can openers...

attachment.php

At a TOO Estate sale they had an extensive free pile and I latched onto a bunch of old Bottles, two NOS signal lights, a handle for I think either guardian to Magnalite griddles and pots, some old 50's 1c stamps (Jefferson) a Tiny brass bell for SWMBO, and part of a shoe stretcher.

attachment.php

At that same sale I did buy these two lanterns. the nickle plate one is the 242 I mentioned earlier, and I think the globe is original! The other is a 1962 200A (cracked globe... ) but came with a slightly tattered box. (Not shown)

attachment.php

the two (bronze?) bells were a buck at the next stop. These have a really pretty tone so my become a wind chime thing...

I also found the ancient mantles in its glassine envelope, and the crumpled instructions for the 200. i may need to steam this to un-crumple it without damage, as its now very brittle...

attachment.php

Last stop was this Kennedy two drawer box for a buck! the bottom is rusty so I'l clean that and paint, but its likely to become my on the rig road box. I have another metal box in my "inventory" and these two may become a locked and semi perm feature since I have no real security for the rig. The box for other things I want secure - a sort of mini trunk...

Some great scores, BlueBomber! After finding that chair, she's probably sold on the "you never know what you might find" concept.

Most of the sales on Spokane were rained out today, but did find one with some tools but they were just just letting them sit out and get wet. Picked up this early 1900s Starrett socket set in the wood case with a Hinsdale piece tossed in and a Plomb socket box with several Plomb pieces and some early Craftsman sockets. They wanted $85 ended up buying it for $50. The sockets were a buck at a local surplus building supply company.04e0296abfd46d2eba921ef9fec75c71.jpg51247b2cd391426a4728ffe63b1c3d52.jpg7b6206ef2818fc270bf03cd18c4be2a0.jpgd7f06db34c02e98834b6e1ea1b9cc66f.jpgf08b893395cebf4b1adc2e011a23fe85.jpga819dd2172a9234d46066d68ce6d197f.jpg6461f6f7ebb635825c8b3f633cafaa61.jpgea6c80eddaa78d77ac77cb7f915649aa.jpgd947a0323401956493d9d422adff14e4.jpg

It was still cloudy and spitting a few sprinkles this morning after a massive amount of rain the past two evenings, but what the heck? It's 50%-off Saturday, so let's hit a couple estate sales.

11-amp Black & Decker heat gun 730* to 830*
40W Craftsman hot glue gun
Stanley hacksaw with comfortable rubber grip
1-lb Craftsman 40/60 rosin-core solder (crown top era, and barely a few inches used)
Coleman fuel filler
Blackhawk BT1152 body hammer
"A Field Guide to the Birds of Texas" by Roger Tory Peterson (Houghton Mifflin, 1963)

$25 for all. Everything is USA except the heat gun (England). The book will go to a friend with a ranch in the Hill Country and a love of wildlife. It's in excellent condition and includes full color plates. I like vintage books and always have my eyes open at the estate sales.

I hit an Estate sale yesterday just before closing and found a couple wrenches and a Craftsman 3/4" drive socket. There was a ton of tools and they were really hoping to close so I vowed to come back this morning(Saturday) and shop a bit deeper. Today was the 3 day of the sale so 1/2 off or so .Generally this seller is reasonable and the prices become much better on 1/2 off day.
Sockets from Snap-On,Williams,Wright,Bonney,Cornwell,Craftsman,Proto and Plumb.
Wrenches from Bonney ,Herbrand,Cornwell, and Williams.
Speeders from Proto and Apco Mossberg of Attleboro Mass.
HUGE tin snips from PS&W
a couple de-burring tools,Arrow stapler,Pittsburgh impact swivels( cheap and better than nothing) ,Tekton ratchet ,Craftsman tap handle,Stanley torx head screwdriver, and the Dasco set of pin punches. The funny thing is the set was in a sandwich bag and was missing the 3/32" punch, the ONLY Dasco pin punch I have at home is a 3/32":rocker:. I had been meaning to get to HD and get a 1/16" punch as I found a couple places on my firearms that the 3/32" didn't fit.

Took the wife to several flea markets today. I found everything in the picture for $14. I should've bought more but I found all of those at the first stop and I didnt want to run out of cash. The Craftsman screwdrivers and torx drivers look to be unused.

A valued member has passed.

Reading through other threads.
Drives posted a notice in the vise thread, and I thought it should be mentioned here as well.

Sadly, Chopper1 passed earlier this week. His last post in the GS thread was on Mother's Day. A few days later, he was no longer with us.

Here is a link to the original notice that Drives linked to, for those who may have missed it.

While I didn't know him personally, I'm saddened to learn of the loss of a fellow GJ Hunter. I offer my condolences to his family, and wish him good fortune in his new hunting grounds.

Had two planned estate sales that looked good and one planned GS. Hit a couple TOO's and found a good third e-sale. All the the TOO's were a waste, but the planned stops were good.
First stop:

Unused Craftsman =v= set (I had the rest at home) Buck Bros socket chisle, Red Devil scraper, Lufkin folding Al. rule, Kline adjustable, file handle and unmarked set of parallel clamps. $5.50
Second e-sale was a shop sale of a guy who rode Harleys and did a lot of ham radio work, along with standard engine type stuff. Lots of good stuff, but it was the last day and pretty picked over, but still 50% off.

Couple vintage Bonney sockets, a MAC socket, continuity tester with the longest blade(?) I have seen and a bottle of liquid silicon in the original GE packing tube. No idea what I will do with it, but too cool to pass up. All that was $5, but I also got this for $25, a Snap On side shelf:

The final e-sale was a TOO, and it looked like a family was dealing with a horder relative. I asked about old tools, his eyes lit up and he took me to the garage, which was just ****... so I bought this for $5, as I am a sucker for a jumbled tub of tools and I wanted to help him.

US on the right, and not much worth keeping. I found one that I need, probably a dozen I will keep, and the rest go to habitat

All the other stops were hopeless, either baby stuff or new stuff they sell every week.
Still a great day.

I had some online dealings with Chopper!, and he was a great guy. One of the best. never met him in person, as I never go to OH and FL is off limits due to an ex-girl friend, but would have loved to meet him. All condolences to his family.

Had a good score today! Have only started doing this recently and it's very addicting! (thanks a lot to all of you by the way!)

How'd i do??

USA Blackhawk 1-3/4" socket, Wright 1-1/2" impact, Williams 3/4" drive 8 inch extension, Armstrong S-91 1/2" drive ratchet, PLOMB 1232, 1246 and 1240 wrenches $15 for all

Overslept and showed up 4 hours after opening and still got a great deal, woman said i missed hundreds of other big wrenches...

Also what's the best way to clean these all up? They will be used frequently and the Plomb wrenches collected. What's the going rate for the 3 Plomb wrenches?

- .50 cal ammo box with a nice marking and an intact canvas strap handle.
- An axel re-threader, this one made by National (never heard of them) in Jackson, Michigan I have a very similar MAC.
- A pocket clip test light. I have a growing affinity for these and have picked up quite a few. I like the art deco housing on the lamp on this one.
- An L.S. Starrett V-block (no. 278). I pawed through that box for an hour looking for its mate and a yoke without any luck.

In the Too Rich for My Blood category was this:

20170519_072901_1495206178681_resized_zpsomf2volj.jpg

This is a WWII British Field Medical pannier, made of canvas, leather, and wicker over an iron frame, on iron reinforced wooden skids. It has a drop front panel that provides access to two drawers on the bottom, which were missing. There are chains on the back for rigging and hemp rope handles on each side for lifting. Other than a broken ******** the left-hand side of the drop front, some badly desiccated leather around the corner and side of the lid on the right, and it being extremely filthy (the canvas should be an almost lime/OD green, seen at the edge around the top). It was in pretty good condition with really nice markings. In addition to the "FIELD MEDICAL" and the red cross on the front, there was a red cross and a large "2" on either side.

The seller thought it was WWI, and US Army, and but I still couldn’t talk the guy down to what I was willing to pay.

I am a little sick with cheap a$$ regret now, but I'll get over it in a day or two.

Here's a similar one in better condition with much better photos for anyone with a "fetish with things you can put things in," as Nine puts it:
http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories ... al-pannier

And in the Left Behind/Research category, this pic of a J.H. Williams 15" monkey wrench.

20170519_073846_resized_zpsosoeabpl.jpg

I have been looking for a 15-inch COES to go with an 8-inch COES for a Signal Corps kit (or, alternately, a pair of PEXTO's), but I suspect this one is too old (interwar, at least). The reason I snapped the pic was the odd branding. The 'J.H. Williams' makes sense. But I've never seen this logo before. Not < W > but < W&B >.

20170519_073841_resized_zpsnt3hgghp.jpg

I'm going to go fishing on the vintage board.

I have a catalog for National, here is a post I made about the company. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=357540

No tools today, but I did pick up this homemade backpack frame, made out of wood, rope, and WWII era backpack shoulder straps and a WWII standard web belt - all marked! It is a fairly ingenious design, well constructed, and smacks of a 1950’s era Boy Scout project. I still have my backpack from the late 1960's and it's going to look great on this frame!

And here is something I know that some of you may appreciate – boxes and boxes of button dies, all old (antique era) trademarks!

Outaw, that U-W brand (block, pulley) is all over etsy and eBay, but not a mention of the manufacturer. I tried TESS under the rope (09.01.13) design category, and looked in a few trade magazines from the early twentieth century. No luck. UW must have been so recognized in the rigging industries that no one ever thought to spell it out for posterity. "Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!"
The stamp at the top is obviously a model number. And the PG&E is obviously Pacific Gas & Electric, so after 1905.

Some of those look like railroad buttons! They could bring some good change.

No Pictures left them in the car, had too much other stuff to "drag" upstairs.
But got total of 13, mostly "Wood Magazine" 1 wood smith, and 4 or 5 0f them are I forget, (can I update later?) 49 cents each, at Good will.
I took all they had, sans 1. (I already have it)
Also paid a dollar for this small clipboard with a tethered pen, for in the car.
Seems like the bank or someone, drugstore drive through, is always giving me something to sign from in the car, and I was tired of using the steering wheel, or my Phone. 99 cents for that. It's nice.
Didn't want to clutter the car up, but I got it anyways.:lol_hitti :eyecrazy:.

What's the going rate for the 3 Plomb wrenches?

cf2d567908ca346fbd5d7211cebec610.jpg

The easiest way to clean them is to just send the plomb wrenches to me [emoji2] depending on the condition the big boys can be $20,$30 per wrench! I would say you ****!

Well traded away the Johnson 8hp outboard today. Got this very nice 2015 Husqvarna 390XP with a new 24" bar and chain in trade. I am torn whether to keep or sell this saw. :willy_nil Next to it is my MS 271.

Also this makes #4 in my running Chainsaw collection, added a pic of them all.

The handle is for your corning-ware (kitchen cookware)... Good find though, those are great.

Wow that's pretty good then! I forgot to mention i also got an old 5 gallon gas jug (the ones with the GOOD nozzle) in the bundle too! That alone is worth $15 to me!

Should i soak these things in vinegar to remove the rust?

If I was you I would try using a wire wheel on them and see how they come out... The nice original smooth one are kinda dark so they may not clean up like you are thinking. Plus you don't want to over clean them . Check out the plomb thread in the vintage tool thread to see what nice original ones look like!

Sure. Vinegar works well. There's a lot of rust removal methods, and everyone has their favorite. But vinegar works and it's easy and readily available.

Don't sell--keep trading up until you end up with an oil well, or a canal, or something. :lol_hitti

Well done!

Some great scores, BlueBomber! After finding that chair, she's probably sold on the "you never know what you might find" concept.

SWMBO likes going to sales with me occasionally, she just brings a book in case she's done picking before I am. Which is usually the case.

She's already sold on the "you never know what you might find" concept. She dragged him home years ago, didn't she ? :lol_hitti

Haha! Jake: when you come over for the New England Pickers Meetup next month, you'll have to ask me how SWMBO and I met. Remember this post when you do...:D

Very sorry to hear about Chopper1. He was one of the good ones.
Small haul today from the Habitat ReStore, a whopping 8 bucks!
A couple locks/misc parts, T&B crimper, 3 screwdrivers and Leviton wallplates for data jacks. Someone beat me to the hammers - the entire bin was empty!

Drove all around town and found nothing until the last sale. Assorted Snap On sockets, 1/4 drive Snap On ratchet and extension, some beat up Snap On drivers, wench and panel clip remover, a Ingersoll Rand angled die grinder, a Klein fish tape and the Fisher No2 1907 anvil. All for 65 dollars.

Went to 2 estate sales which were a total bust, then on the way home noticed "garage sale- vintage furniture" signs that led to my street. A few blocks down from my house I found the following:

1) A 20" by 30" section of 1.5" thick heavy bamboo butcher block, which I plan to incorporate into a workbench surface unless my wife claims it as "bread kneading" board. $5

2) A burly metal Titan space heater, great for under the garage workbench. $10

3) An Acro-Mills small parts organizer $3

Today's, rather, yesterday's haul.
