Lug: TopPop started this AXE thread in vintage tools if that's the one you are looking for and here's the link:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=315525&highlight=show+axes

ALL: the last couple days i found a few more interesting smallish Lyon cabinets that should hold some of my stuff nicely. the taller locking cabinet i thought was a Stronghold, but i don't think it is. it's well built and sorry to say the seller didn't sell it with the contents, but i do have a key and the lock works and he had 2 more shelves.

anybody else have these and care to share what you store in them and post up a few pictures?

If I was you I would try using a wire wheel on them and see how they come out... The nice original smooth one are kinda dark so they may not clean up like you are thinking. Plus you don't want to over clean them . Check out the plomb thread in the vintage tool thread to see what nice original ones look like!

thanks! they are actually the rough textured wrenches, has the dimples all over them. not sure if the picture shows that. ill try to wire wheel them first, i soaked the sockets in vinegar though

id just like to get the wrenches back to a gray color and hang them up while i try to find the rest

Swingpress:

When I saw that pic of anvils at sale you were going to on Saturday, knew you would get a good one and you didn't disappoint, with that Vulcan 200 lb anvil in great shape.

On that odd looking vise, is it a bench or woodworking vise? Have you found a mfg on it yet?

Money issues aside, no sales for me the last two weeks. Missed some interesting prospects too. :(
I threw my back out and have been laid up until yesterday. Sleeping in a recliner with pillows *****. This morning I decided I was well enough to go out past the mailbox, and went over to wander the local flea market. I quickly realized that I might have made a hasty decision. It took me forever to hobble around the grounds with a cane. Most tools were on the ground, so I couldn't dig through the boxes because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get back up. It was frustrating.

The place was packed this week. They had tables all the way back filling the free parking area, so I had to pay $5 to park in a neighbors field across the street. I hate paying to go to a free flea market.

Anyway, towards the end, I found a few things on a table for $2ea.
Spent $8 for :

PROTO Profrssional
#5241 3/8dr #2 Phillips driver
#5246 3/8dr 1/4" flat driver
#4914 3/8dr 7/16" crowsfoot
#4916 3/8dr 1/2" crowsfoot

image.jpg

Now I'm back in the recliner for the rest of the day. Watched Liverpool FC close out their season on a high note, and will be cheering on the NE Revolution this afternoon.

I wonder if I can get away with washing down a pain pill with a beer ? :beer2: :willy_nil :lol_hitti

Jake, sorry to hear you are having back issues. When my sciatica was really getting me, I got into using a walking stick instead. I find its less wobbly to be pulling down on the stick rather than "balancing" on a cane pushing down.

Its also nicer for standing from a squat as you can "climb' the stick and you can't really do that with a cane.

The "cane" is more of a shillelagh, or a cudgel if needed.

image.jpg

I've mastered sliding down the cane to get down, and climbing the pole to get back up. But I avoid it if I can to avoid the stress on my back. Another day or two and I should be able to put it back in the closet, if I'm careful.

Absolutely, if you read the label on the medication you'll see that it says, "Alcohol enhances the effects", or something like that. I learned that back in college when I was in pre-med (or was that pre-law? Eh, same thing). Anyway, it always seemed more intense when a quaalude was washed down with a couple of beers - Night Night!!!

lol I'm not entirely sure. I have asked about that vise to a few people and every time they see it I just get a "Well look at that!" Out of them. There is a makers mark but it very worn. I'll snag a couple more photos one put them up tonight.

Hey guys. I've been away for a week on a much needed vacation. Have not been online for over a week! :shocking: It's fun looking at all these finds at once. A bit of overload though.

Jake- First of all, I hope you get to feeling better real quick. Back injuries ****!

Thanks for posting the link about Chopper. I'm truly shocked and saddened. I was just reading along in this thread to catch up, enjoying the finds by everyone, and then to see that.... He was one of my favorite members on here and the Gazette. He loved to talk tools and knew his stuff. He will be missed.

All - I have been in the Dominican Republic for a week. Without leaving the resort, sadly the closest thing to a flea market was a dozen tables set up one night in the lobby, full of tchotchke souvenirs, and ripoff $15 t-shirts (priced higher than the shops).

One afternoon I almost wanted to tackle the maintenance guy to see what he had in his two carry boxes. :) I did notice the boxes were TRUPER brand, as was the wheelbarrow on the beach.

The week was beautiful and probably did me good with no internet the entire trip. We took a boat ride and did some snorkeling, and that was really amazing.

Dutch- really liking that Hazet box!

Swing- was the auction madness with all those vises? Prices get out of hand there?

Prices an a few got a little stupid. I bid up to $150 per post vise and didn't get one! They had probably 50+ small vises, jewelers vises, hand vises, saw vises, etc. of various designs and about half went for $50+. Most of the mini leg vises brought around $20-$40 if memory serves.
This was my view of the vises and there were more:
b76bae9c5fc1c8acc7d50c0ab6d77652.jpg

They did have a 400lb Vulcan anvil that brought $2,400.00 and a 5lb triple "0" Vulcan anvil that fetched somewhere close to $400.00

Probably saw 30 Vulcan marked axes bring $40-$60 each.

Here is some other items I picked up....

Had a big long local yard sale in my neck of the woods this weekend. Filled in a few tools that I needed and got a lot of spares. Mostly looking for American craftsman stuff, but I did find a belt/spinning combo sander for $10. It is older and was made in Taiwan but is a cast iron model so I think I got a good deal!

Hit up a local antique mall today. Saw a couple interesting items but overpriced. No pics but did see a 5" pair of linemans pliers marked P.S.&Wco. as well as Utica 8" gas burner pliers. And these displays.

The estwing and disston signs have to be 5' long. $375/ea iirc
The Diamond Tool & Horseshoe display was $70. The horseshoes were all very rusty.

My wife is there with the two oldest girls, they took a cruise to DR and part of the cruise they have to go on the island to do community service. So they will help pour concrete, process cocoa beans for chocolate, and interact with childrens that are learning english at the local schools. Since my wife speaks spanish she enjoys speaking to other spanish speaking folks.

That looks like a sweet auction. I was curious about the prices. All those anvils in one place is really something.

Thanks for sharing. That Diamond display is cool. The hammer, I've seen a few of those.

Nice. A lot of the employees we dealt with speak Spanish and French, and not very good English. Especially the younger people. It's all over the board though and varies by person. I was really impressed the boat tour man spoke all three plus Italian. I really didn't expect that.

Drove all around town and found nothing until the last sale. Assorted Snap On sockets, 1/4 drive Snap On ratchet and extension, some beat up Snap On drivers, wench and panel clip remover, a Ingersoll Rand angled die grinder, a Klein fish tape and the Fisher No2 1907 anvil. All for 65 dollars.

You killed it on that Fisher! Worth far more than what you paid for everything combined. That one is worth a "You ****!!" Well done!

Ever wonder why we bring home some things ? Me neither.

However, I do wonder if anyone can tell me what this old tool was used for ? It's really good for holding a weekend coffee cup. 52b2a17126fd67747585e97ddc95d0e7.jpg

Seems like I'm on a rusty mode. Old Walker, it was at the same sale.

wrenchguy : I tried to call about that grinder 513-353-3660 but kept getting a "disconnected" message? Hope they are still around!

Zooming in, it looks like it says "WALMAN" on the saw vise looking thing, but my google-fu is strong and I didn't turn anything up.

Ever wonder why we bring home some things ? Me neither.

However, I do wonder if anyone can tell me what this old tool was used for ? It's really good for holding a weekend coffee cup. 52b2a17126fd67747585e97ddc95d0e7.jpg

Clearly that is a vertical spit for making gyro meat on.

One is the remains of a Camelback Drill press, (variable speed no less!) the other is a floor jack.

f9387e6c4b45cfd74ce0dfb40c17ae4e.jpg. I coincidentally saw this (drill press) the same day I bought the rusty relic. (Absentee bid , farm auction)

857f2d42c3658822b6b90ff705f37c38.jpg. There are some interesting differences, how the heck they made a drill press from this is still stumping my imagination.

Thanks Outlaw! I googled Camelback DP and got an eyeful of these relics. Variable speed, sweet. Maybe that's the part that is stumping me.

16" piece of RR track (38lbs) (I don't need anymore, but I couldn't leave it behind)
a groovy plastic pencil sharpener

I totally would have fallen for both of those.

Meanwhile, I scored a free map file cabinet on CL. There were actually 3 of these available but I don't have a truck or trailer, so I had to take out all of the drawers and the top off so I could lift just the first one up onto my roof rack, then put it back together so I could take it home, then take it apart again so I could lift it off the roof rack...

By the time I got back to pick up the others, another guy was loading the other two onto his truck. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

Dang it! I had a basket of tools from Saturday in my car that I completely forgot about! I think the official sign you have a problem is when you buy them faster than you can sort them! All for $10. Challenger, KAL, MAC, FLEET, S-K Wayne, Herabrand, snap-on.

Then from last night. I went to a hole in the wall consignment auction out of boredom. There was a rough old straight razor in a case that I wanted but they sold all the contents as 1 lot. Ugh... But turn out it was one of my better buys. Gave $40 for all ( those with a keen eye might find the cup of particular interest...)

I see a perfectly good back-seat... Or if you can fold down your rear seats have it stick out the trunk... hehe...
