I totally would have fallen for both of those.

Meanwhile, I scored a free map file cabinet on CL. There were actually 3 of these available but I don't have a truck or trailer, so I had to take out all of the drawers and the top off so I could lift just the first one up onto my roof rack, then put it back together so I could take it home, then take it apart again so I could lift it off the roof rack...

By the time I got back to pick up the others, another guy was loading the other two onto his truck. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

Sweet deal. Definite suckage. Couldn't they hold them for you or were they at the curb?

Bargain: nice find and great effort getting at least one them back home. i went to pick up 2 and the seller had 4 and i was able to fit 3 inside my Honda Pilot, but the 4th one would have had to ride on top like yours did. when he saw that i was willing to do that and drive 3 hours back home he said he'd hold it until i came back in a couple weeks.

i've seen Riley put a Craftsman bottom roller in the back of his Camry, but you can't get these flat files in a regular back seat. it's not easy getting 3 in the back of a big SUV with the seats down, but i put down a rubber 1/2 inch rubber gym mat that helps protect the seats and i've done this several times.

now to clarify some of these flat files are 40 inches wide, 46.5 inches wide and 53.5 inches wide and you can't get 3 of the big ones in a SUV.

SP:
do you have a huge garage to fill or are you about ready to rent a storage unit with all your HAULS lately?

I haven't sold anything i have bought and I think that is going to have to change in the near future. Well, except the wrenches, and that cup, and my grinders, or the anvils..... so I'm not ready yet! Don't judge me!!!

From the other sale that day in the dollar box:

Some misc. dbe's . Plomb, Mac, Tru-Fit.

A tuning fork

An interesting HD SMITH "DOUBLE BIT" screwdriver shank. I assume for a brace.

I thought this was neat as it's a different type item from the Perfect Handle people. Not sure why but it's the same size 5/16" on each end.

Anyone know the significance of the S in a circle stamp?

And this little set for $6. A $10 price tag that was on it.

I think that price tag was my saving grace. Right as I first walked in to the garage, an older lady and a girl say in her 20's were looking at it and the older woman says look how cute this little self contained set is in this little box.

I was chanting in my head "Please put it down, please put it down, please put it down". :lol_hitti

Yes!!! She put it back on the table and set an antique tea cup on top of it and left. :rocker:

It has a 1/4 HUSKY breaker from the early NB era with the cross bar and most of the sockets, in very nice shape. Not sure if the box is correct, it looks NB.

The tiny wrenches indicate it may have been used in ignition work. I like the long Royal wrench.

Dang it! I had a basket of tools from Saturday in my car that I completely forgot about! I think the official sign you have a problem is when you buy them faster than you can sort them! All for $10. Challenger, KAL, MAC, FLEET, S-K Wayne, Herabrand, snap-on.

So when it wears out, you can flip it over and go another 100 years.

Swingpress, the big round ball thing isn't made of iron is it???? I hope that isn't an old cannon ball......

At first, let's just say I picked the box up carefully!! I have found things at auctions (if I'm getting what you're hinting at) that made pee dribble down my leg before.

Then I realized it was stone (granite I think?)

Thank goodness! We had some friends years ago that had a cannon ball they kept near the fireplace.....that they burned wood in for heat!!!!!!! My dad who works for the Army in ordinance told them to call someone to dispose of it properly. A rusty old cannon ball from the Civil War era isn't too stable.

Picked up 2 S-K 3/8 (45170) ratchets. Both are in great shape. Interesting thing one has the vintage <s-k> diamond logo and the other is stamped S-K WAYNE. Both have a lot of good miles on them and will be great additions to my everyday toolbox. I have a few good "honey hole" flea markets.

Solid shot isn't a problem. If you see a hole with a wooden plug, that's a shell with a hollow ball, and it could be still live. Most elongated projectiles carried a bursting charge.

It is a correct NB box, 3bay. They had the same supplier as SK. The NB NM- series and the None Better M- series sets both came in them, too. This Husky midget set is a very nice find. I've never seen one in the wild. :D

I use to stop at a little Civil War collectables store in Colonial Heights, VA. The owner was an older guy who really knew his stuff and was willing to share his knowledge. He specialized in disarming and restoring cannon balls. One afternoon he drilled into one and was killed.

While I was still on active duty, a little old lady brought in a very corroded artillery shell and wanted to "get rid of it". The shell dated to WWII and her husband had brought it home when he was discharged in 1945. They had used it as a door stop for 40 years. When she brought it in, she placed it on the desk of one of our civilian workers. The look on his face was priceless and you couldn't have driven a straight pin up his **** with a sledge hammer. EOD arrived and guess what. It was White Phosphorous (Willie Peter) and was a viable shell. Now all of us had that same look on our faces and my **** still clenches when I think about it.

I picked up some decent things. Nothing truly "you ****" but more along the lines of a big box of new wire nuts and such for my hardware storage rack.

Swingpress must be awfully disappointed that no one bit on his hint about the cup. A little quick googling reveals it to be a "coin silver" julep cup from a smithy active in the mid 1800s. This cup dates from between 1859 and 1864. Here's a pristine example that went for over $1500 at auction.

Swingpress--you suuuuuuuck! Great find!!! Will you flip it to see what it'll bring?

Well, compared with everything else in the case it cost me $2. Lol Today I left it with these folks:
http://hilesplating.com

They are a multi-generation silver smithing company and the work they do is amazing! I told the owner to check it over and give me an estimate for a museum quality restoration as I don't want to do ANYTHING that would take away from its history and want the entire process documented (only because I think that it would be amazing to see). You can check them out, it's impressive stuff! As far as selling it...... I really don't know. I have made a few trips to the Kentucky derby and it is quite an event. Part of me wants at least one photo with it at the derby just to say I did something stupid like that lol! Anyways, I don't know that eBay or any of the local auctions would be the correct place for it. ( but I don't know that for a fact either). Whatever happens, I will at least put before and after photos and probably make a thread on the process since I think any smith work is a true art.

I had a few good weekends,

Got this cool cummins drill with an old skillsaw, jigsaw, sander and a army duffle bag for 5$. And a stuffed dog named brownie my daughter found. I think her cuteness may have helped the deal

Oldest power tool ive ever seen, googling around shows its called a bomb drill

This toolbox was 5$. It says lyon ill, its very well built and has the tray. I was thinking of making it my junkyard tote, but its a little big, and may have some cdn military significance. I found that some of these were used for radio equipment, although this one has no markings?
Also old crescent and a cute barcalo wrench

I see a perfectly good back-seat... Or if you can fold down your rear seats have it stick out the trunk... hehe...

My '98 Jetta TDI (aka the Jetta "F150") is my beater car for Craigslist deals, garage sailing, mountain trips, camping and general schlepage, but even while it works great (45mph!) and has plenty of life and pep for a 90HP engine, it does have size limitations. The map files sadly would not fit in the trunk nor through the doors.

Sweet deal. Definite suckage. Couldn't they hold them for you or were they at the curb?

They were outside an industrial marine hydraulics business that occasionally offloads great items for free in their parking lot. I should probably get a trailer just for hauling this sort of stuff, but the reality is I just have a 2 car garage and there is only so much stuff I can pack in there. Long term it be great to have a beater pickup and bigger shop. I am firmly convinced that one could build and furnish an entire house with free Craigslist finds if one is patient, resourceful, creative, and has a place to store the **** while acquiring it and building it out.

Bargain: nice find and great effort getting at least one them back home. i went to pick up 2 and the seller had 4 and i was able to fit 3 inside my Honda Pilot, but the 4th one would have had to ride on top like yours did. when he saw that i was willing to do that and drive 3 hours back home he said he'd hold it until i came back in a couple weeks.

i've seen Riley put a Craftsman bottom roller in the back of his Camry, but you can't get these flat files in a regular back seat. it's not easy getting 3 in the back of a big SUV with the seats down, but i put down a rubber 1/2 inch rubber gym mat that helps protect the seats and i've done this several times.

now to clarify some of these flat files are 40 inches wide, 46.5 inches wide and 53.5 inches wide and you can't get 3 of the big ones in a SUV...

Mine is 42"x54"

Lyon Metal Products Inc, in Aurora, Illinois, was a huge WWII supplier of all kinds of steel shelving, parts bins, racks, etc. They had fifteen (15) contracts between 1940 and 1945 with every branch you can imagine (Ordnance, QMC, Corps of Eng., Signal Corps, etc) worth a total of $8,543,000. I don't know if they sold to the Canadian Army, but it wouldn't surprise me. I buy their stuff for my shop whenever I see it.

Here's a neat tote of theirs I picked up recently. I like the clearance under the handle.

Then again, you may want to make a cute planter out of yours! :lol_hitti

As long as im post whoring, in a 5$ bucket of stuff was a plumb breaker bar, and a cool old mac wrench. From another sale was a "Proto of Canada" crescent, Mfd USA  and a neat craftsman knife.

Lug: the last couple days i found a few more interesting smallish Lyon cabinets that should hold some of my stuff nicely. the taller locking cabinet i thought was a Stronghold, but i don't think it is. it's well built and sorry to say the seller didn't sell it with the contents, but i do have a key and the lock works and he had 2 more shelves.

anybody else have these and care to share what you store in them and post up a few pictures?

Drives, love the storage solutions ! I have some Lyons cabinets and I use them for many different things from tools, to files, to sandpaper to steel wool to nuts and bolts, etc.
