Gidge: nice to see you posting again or maybe i've been missing the threads you post on. in any case i'm with you and Lug that i'll buy Lyon almost anytime i find them and would love a few of their toolboxes.

ALL: here's a piece of a wall in my 10x20 storage unit so some of you might see how to use these flat files and old filing cabinets.

this 6 drawer Remington Rand (another quality metal cabinet maker) had close to 30 vises in it and not all little ones cause i know a Vanderman in there weighs 100 pounds. in any case i only needed to move it 2 inches and had to empty almost all the vises to move it.

hope you all had a great day

Come on, how is this not cute :supergay: :p:p

You're right - both in size and form it hardly can be called anything but cute. Slender, petite, classy? What is the gender of wrenches anyway? The way they cozy up to bolt heads and nuts with open ends (or even box ends) doesn't leave much to the imagination.

I talked the wife into going hunting on Saturday, lots of kids clothing and junk. Finally got to an estate sale that at first didn't look very promising, as I walked up to the garage the lady says "all the old tools are in the basement"!! So I said I guess we know where I'm heading!

I got down in the basement and theres tables set up end to end about 20ft long filled with all manner of machinists tools, lots and lots of taps, reamers and many things I don't have any idea what they are for. There were a lot of people crammed in the basement too, I was honestly overwhelmed.

I ended up buying a nice looking 3-in-1 oil tin, a beat up vintage first aid / bandage tin with a few taps inside it a razor knife, and I think that was it. I even forgot to buy a set of 20lb dumbbells I saw sitting outside the garage for $10.

Well the next morning I decided to go back down, for one, I wanted those dumbbells and for two, I wanted to see what was left and if the prices were any lower.

This day had a different feel, there was no crowd so I took my time looking through things. the lady running the show told me that prices were half on those marked in black. I got to the tools table and there was still a lot left, most of the taps were marked at $1 each (in black) some were $2. I don't particularly need more taps I have a pretty good set and I am not a collector.. I grabbed a little cardboard box and tossed in about 10 that looked good, I also grabbed a few tap wrenches marked between $2.50 and $5. I looked around the tool benches and saw many curvy wrenches marked individually, they looked neat but again, I'm not a collector so I left them there. I found an old toolbox on the floor marker $50 in black, crossed out to $35 in red, I guess that meant she was firm on the price. I opened it up and it's just slam full of stuff that I don't recognize. Some square rods or blocking, I assume for machinist type things, theres a few bigger taps in there, some attachments that look like they are from a lathe.. I went to pick up the box and it had to weigh 70+ pounds.

I asked her if she'd take $25 and she said yes. I don't know why I'm buying this, I told her. I don't know what 90% of it is.. With the taps and other pieces I was buying plus the box my total came up to $42.50. I lugged the box out to my truck and realized I forgot the dumbbells, lol.. I went back and she had already sold them, oh well.. this box will give me a good workout..

ps. I'll post pics when I can, the box is hidden in my shop and the contents are numerous

Nice find!

Often on half-price days, if it's getting late in the day or if there is a lot of stuff left, I always try to haggle for a big pile of stuff. I keep adding up the total in my head as I'm grabbing things so I know what price I would have to pay if they don't come down, but more often than not they do...

I see what appear to be hones, laps, allen wrenches, lathe or grinder drive dog, punches and assorted other odds & ends and general junk that "might come in handy some day". Oh yeah, and a rusty die stock.

I love cleaning out old buildings used for storage now being converted to apartments. Everything has to go, whether its in the dumpster or the trunk of my car, lol (and yes i was given permission to take whatever i wanted).

Building used to be a bowling alley. Whoever stored his stuff here was into woodworking and Craftsman. There was a Craftsman radial arm saw, a Craftsman King Seeley benchtop jointer, B&D corded drill, Craftsman belt sander, and Craftsman Commercial router. Also a really cool crown top Craftsman miter box and saw. I didnt get pics but there are all sorts of nos Craftsman accessories, like a wood clamp set, dado blades, hinge jig, and others in boxes. And junk. Lots of junk.

And for some added fun, there was a roof leak so some water damage. And bird ****. And mouse turds.

Attached was my haul.
Strange Kennedy hand box I've never seen before. TC-20-AL. Has two drawers with spring loaded latches, unfortunately looks like it had something big and heavy sitting on it that slightly smooshed it. Drawers stick to one another, bonus it does have 2 keys.

Eagle oil can
3 matching pair Ohio license plates late 80s/early 90s
Genuine Lebus USA model W chain binder?
Old porcelain coated steel kettle
NOS General doweling jig
Craftsman V 1/2 speeder
Aluminum pole sander
2 pcs cleaning brushes
Stanley USA close quarter hacksaw
Cable Clamp orange plastic cord holder
4 assorted small c-clamps, larger are Stanley Handyman and Western Auto. Small ones just say USA.

$5. VV series. Not the steal of the century, but great for a set to keep in the Jeep. Just need to find an 18mm one.

Acting on a hunch, I responded to a CL ad for a heritage-era Craftsman roller listed for $20. The roller was rough and NO Drives, I don't need it, but my hunch paid off.

Besides the tool box, I ended up with a handful of vintage Craftsman =V= wrenches, Craftsman =V= 1/4" drive socket set in metal box, Mitutoyo dial caliper, Brown & Sharpe depth mic, Starrett 18" combination square (with protractor head only) - all not pictured.

Pictured includes:

- Yost 105 vise
- Heritage-era Craftsman drill index
- Proto LA 4020A straight jaw puller set
- Proto LA 9708 & 9712 wood handle screwdrivers
- Proto LA wrench pouches

All told, I paid $150.

After some digging, it appears the Lebus chain binder is actually still in production, and is now a Crosby Lebus midget chain binder. One rigging supply had them for $58.

The Kennedy box is actually a fishing tackle box, which explains the few fishing lures in it.

So today... aw hell, I see a sale every day and try to go if at all possible.

So the find at this one was a set of challenger wrenches at 50 cents a wrench. And then, I found a Western Auto branded fishing pole new in the package. Made by Garcia No. 7D. It is really clean ( it should be). $5

There Y'a go, great deal, those are handy.
I made one with a kit out of an r-12 bottle, but it only did about 1 tire at a time.

That's about all they do (If that from flat) all they are intended to do is top off a tire a few pounds. Used those for years at the track. I'd like all those times refilling the dang thing back... :D

ALL: a few members were mentioning starting a sort of GJ delivery service from member to member so thought i tell the GARAGE SALE FRIENDS here about it. i started a thread called the GJ MULE TRAIN not because i want to be in charge cause i'd gladly pass on that batton, but more so to get it started.

how many times have you driven your car, truck or trailer empty a few hours to go pick up something? or how many times have you driven a few hours more or less on the way home with nothing in your truck, car or trailer? this is also for truckers that want to help fill in a few gaps and either do it for free or a discount? it's also a really good chance for some of us to meet members we might not normally have met.

the link is in my sig line now and post up on the thread saying your ability to help or any ideas you might have to make it better.

cheers and hope you are all having a great day.

Scored this lot today at an estate sale today for $50.
A 3.5" Craftsman bench vise, a 3.5" Add+Vise from England, a nice Baldor bench grinder, a Mac ball peen hammer, and an Executive Pocket Chum. I had a red theme going on today. adc9b4894d8e927a8a3b4a095397921e.jpg16661594c4db10dd37f1ce1393685171.jpga3b5e55190c6ee95c5e99fb1b5a44e76.jpg7a333a3a72b6e2ca94dd03e4f2ca9d47.jpgfebc7a62a47202251e21fd9b7b2b5b00.jpg3e4384ee7a2e4269d01c2869a6fba478.jpg

Jeeze you guys ****... The garage sales advertised this weekend and last were so pathetic looking I didn't even bother wasting the hours driving around... I don't know why things dried up around here, usually there are at least 3-4 good sales every weekend...

I was not intending to go to any sales today but I encountered a TOO and came up with this lot:

IMG_2497 (Large).jpg

Trimont 36 inch pipe wrench, teeth look great.
Wilton 4 inch Shop King, with the pipe jaws AND the hardy.
Ace 3 1/2 inch vise, very clean.

All for $45.

PS I also found a killer cheeseburger and brisket cheese fries : )

Definitely a you **** when you score a SK set plus others for 5 bucks.

I hit a few sales today, I'll post my score later once I clean it up a little

One more item that I bought, but didn't pick up till the yard sale ended today, as owners needed it to display other yard sale items for sale.

That worked also for me, as my little truck was full, plus it was only a couple miles from home to come back to the sale later.

According to the info got from owner, this was a jewelry workbench that came out of L. S. Peterson Company of Attleboro MA who operated from 1943 until about 1994 in jewelry business.

What I fell in love with was the cast iron legs/frame that supports the workbench

Funny how things like this can end up in the middle of Ohio.

Mike

Scored this lot today at an estate sale today for $50.
A 3.5" Craftsman bench vise, a 3.5" Add+Vise from England, a nice Baldor bench grinder, a Mac ball peen hammer, and an Executive Pocket Chum. I had a red theme going on today.

I had an add a vise many years ago in UK when I had no money and it was given to me. It did a lot of work for such a light vise.

That thing is cool, Mike! Industrial furniture is all the rage.

When I was a kid (1960's) the hospital in my hometown was torn down. It was a brick structure with stucco and ornate pavilion roofs with green wooden eaves, badly aging. My mom was a nurse and she got my dad and my brothers and I inside before the big wrecking ball came. We came home with an operating table (picture a heavy, monstrous, white porcelain base, with steel elevation and pitch cranks like ship wheels) that he turned into a drafting table. I would love to have that thing, but one of my brothers got it. I do have his old Keuffel & Esser. It's disassembled for restoration. Yet another project I have never finished!

It was a strange day at the Early Bird!

The HK Porter bolt clippers are 24" long. The t-handle wrench looks like a carb tool to me. I could be wrong.

The contents in the cardboard box are what made my day strange!! They are all WWII cockpit instruments, all dated. I don't know enough about WWII Army aviation to know if they are from the same aircraft, but they are not duplicates. Clockwise from the top it's a radio compass, an altimeter, a gyro, a course indicator, and a pitch indicator.

If they’re valuable to an individual or an association restoring an aircraft, I am going to flip them. And if they’re not, they’ll make great paper weights and mantle pieces in my den!

Five bucks for the craftsman.
It means nothing to me, I bought it in case someone here needed it. No rust except the kind that goes away with a wet paper towel.

Three bucks for the little folding box.
It might become a wall lamp with long led bulbs and diffuser panels in each section.
It's going to be a great sconce.

The craftsman box is sold for the five bucks I paid and is being picked up here.

Guy wants 120 bucks for this.
It's the short ww1 version, but I don't know real from ripoff.
The sheath says early eighties or seventies(to me.)
Maybe a fifty year old knockoff.
Chances are yours, but I'll pick it up for you if you're sure....
I can't imagine a real one saying
Survival knife
on it.

Just a note of caution - some aircraft instruments used radium paint to make them glow in the dark, and they are rather radioactive. It would be worth finding someone with a Geiger counter to check them out. You don't want to get this paint inside you, which is a particular risk if it has turned to powder.

Saw a box of worn out hole saws, misc steel pieces that look like they were used as seal installers, old bolts, etc. and spied a couple puller legs in the bottom and the words Snap On. Had to buy it as I was missing some puller legs for one I have.

Was pleasantly surprised to find what looks like to be a complete set.
